Will continue to dominate lower levels of footy, but not up to AFL class. I don't really see the point in keeping him on the list. He's next to useless as a ruck back-up. I'd rather somebody like Minson who can at least hold their own in a ruck contest.

It's a bit like Mitch Marsh in the Aussie cricket team. Not good enough as a batsman, not good enough as a bowler but somehow gets picked as half of each.

Could play like Josh Jenkins.

A rookie can only be upgraded when there is space on the senior list (either by starting with 38 or 39 senior players and using the preseason/midseason upgrade rules or through an LTI replacement upgrade). If we rookie McKernan, we'd only have ruck depth in circumstances where we have the ability to upgrade him, although whether he is capable of providing dependable ruck depth is arguable in and of itself.

Having only two proper ruckmen on the senior list is a bit scary, especially given that they're both injury prone. In a one-ruck set up (with another player chopping out) we'd run into problems if both of our ruckmen have short term injuries at the same time. In a two-ruck set up (which we preferred last year, although perhaps that was due to a lack of KPFs?) we're in trouble even with only one of them sitting out, all that assuming no other player is eligible to be placed on the LTI list and replaced with McKernan.

If we had a third (decent) ruckman on the senior list then that would solve those issues, otherwise I imagine we'll need to go in with less than 40 players just to be safe. Either of those solutions could be difficult in a year when list spots are reportedly very limited, however.

If mckernan wants to have a crack 100% of the time, he can add value. Too many times he is uncompetitive from lack of effort.

If and when he has a crack he is of value. The most frustrating player on our list

Hint: It won't be better than anything you've seen in his 8 years of being on an AFL list.
If it was as good as his last half of 2015, it would absolutely be of value. The question is, can he reproduce that? The odds are probably stacked against it.

But right now, giving him one more year as depth is something I don't mind.

Not as a forward. He was good at AFL level in 2015 following as an undersized ruckman.

We should have played Sam Michael a bit more last season.

Hi Sam!

Because he was only ever going to take a spot of a listed player we were deveoping and he was never going to be listed. Was simply there as depth for the year we had no depth. His form didn't command a spot either

How do we deveop a player then?
And which player would you like to deveop?

Why would we invest time into a player we had no interest in?
Who's spot would Michael be competing with if we kept him in?
There is not one ounce of logic in saying we should have played him more. As a mature ager he wasnt up to it, nor was he expected to be. He was only ever to be called upon when the cupboard was bare and or he dominated the VFL which he didn't do.

Ok I didn't get to see too many games up here.
I would have thought we could have used our taller options better last season. Leunberger and Jamar were frustrating in front of goal. Tim English is a good ruck prospect, Lowden having been cut from crows lacked opportunities.
We don't have Gach, Michael and Jamar, the cupboard is T Bell and Leuy, that's it.

Is there a chance that Gach can be re-rookied? He kept improving as season went on. Hope he is not being punished for his minor indiscretion. A lit of people at the club liked him.

McKernan's form 2015 to 2016 was like day and night.

Somebody mentioned he has just had an op.

If he was carrying an injury in 2016, he deserves another chance.

Nyuon won't be re-rookied as he was just on the rookie list.

delisted with intent to rookie
Essendon has made a further change to its squad ahead of the 2017 season, de-listing Shaun McKernan from the senior list.

However, Essendon List and Recruiting Manager, Adrian Dodoro, said the Club is committed to re-drafting McKernan at the upcoming AFL National Rookie Draft.

ā€œShaun is a very focused and competitive young man, and when given the opportunity at senior level heā€™s shown he can add real value to the team particularly in his versatility to play as both a key forward and ruckman,ā€ Dodoro said.

ā€œShaun is driven to play regular senior football and we hope with a big pre-season and continued development in specific areas of his game, he can achieve this goal at Essendon.ā€
