Player Watch #7: Ben Lennon

I would love to know if he has actually worked hard. I mean REALLY worked hard.

I can't help but look at LLoyd, a very similar player who absolutely busted a gut pre-season 2016 and had a pretty reasonable year at AFL level and this year has run around in VFL playing midfield and kicking goals and has just had a 50 possession game last weekend.

Maybe this is part of the problem.

From what I understand - that is from what's been put out there by the club and from what I have gleaned from the few people I know involved at the club -b yes Ben has been busting a gut to do everything possible to make things work. As has Lloyd, Miles, Townsend and Batchelor.
If his career winds up short of expectations - and face it - a first round pick does come with high expectations - it won't be because he didn't work hard enough at the back end of his career.
I think someone nailed it before on here .... I'm not sure the contested part of his game is a strength and unfortunately for him, that is a strength of our overall game.

lloyd and lennon play different roles in the vfl. lennon is more a lead up forward. his workrate has improved enormously from previous years. but with our smalls and him not actually being tall enough to play as a tall at afl level we just dont seem to have a spot for him. its a shit draft so he'll get a contract or move clubs

Is Jacob Townsend or Caddy tall enough to play tall at AFL level. Forgetting the goals If Townsend showed anything it was we dont need a fwd line full of small runts to be able to apply fwd half pressure.

Well spoken!
On Lennon, gotta feel sorry for the guy. He gets picked and plays instead of Townsend or Castagna, he likely boots four goals against that rabble.

I do not know anything about the players in the reserves regarding their form.

If Townsend was promoted because of more consistent form then the correct decision was made.

It's not a bad problem to have right now. The second tall has been our so called achilles heel all season. Soldo just too immobile to play forward, same really for Nankervis, but has a few weeks rest so should be good for finals. Griff and Hampson are not match ready, and do we need them?
Caddy and or Townsend with Martin resting forward is big enough as they are all strong and mobile. Means Jack has to sacrifice his game to impact every high ball. So I don't think they will change much, which is good because we have spent all season experimenting and it has come to this.
Next season I think Callum Moore is a real chance. Tall runs like a hare, good mark, athlete and better ruckman than Grigg. Would have been great to see him tried earlier, but now we will just go in as is.

VINDICATED !!!

After 2 years of copping sh!t about this bloke even to the stage where i got thread banned about stating the bloody obvious .Finally the rest of you have woken up to this bloke who is a limited player with even a lower limit of respect for the RFC

Even though some here doubt it but i can tell you that we will have $400,000 to spare in our TPP to match Norths Dusty bid and if dust wants to go North can hand over their 1st & 2nd pic

Cant wait till these trash players are delisted and we get on with forming a proper list and not a safe house for spuds

I think it comes down to flexibility during the game, caddy and Townsend can do time in the midfield rotating with dusty or cotch where Lennon can't play that midfield role, I think this is the same reason that miles and Lloyd haven't had consistent runs of games this year they just aren't flexible enough to perform multiple roles

What are you on about. Vindicated... because he's not come on as hoped. Good for you. Trash players really. The main problem with Lennon is his lack of pace, has great skills, but without pace at his size it is difficult. Good for you you spotted it so early on, I feel sorry for the bloke, high draft pick, came in expecting to play footy at the highest level and probably realises it's not going to happen. Don't know why you feel so chuffed.

Probably because he feels Lennon should have been moved on earlier, perhaps even got some value for him. And wanting success sooner rather than later, frustrated with the incompetence of our drafting/development/list management over the years.
But as I posted back a bit, good luck to the kid in the SANFL/WAFL.

I don't think it was that obvious that he wasn't going to make it, if that is how it turns out. The game in the last couple of years has really amped up in the last year or so pace wise, and Lennon and maybe C.Ellis are victims of this, not sure that was so obvious when drafted. Both have great skills and time with ball so it was a fine line when drafting them. Not all make it.

Liam Jones just didn't have the tank the way forwards need to now and he got a lifeline down back.
Wherever Ben plays next year that's what I'd be trying. You don't need the sane running capabilities as a forward in today's game.

HERE'S a scenario to contemplate for Lennon lovers and those who judge everything through black and yellow blinkers.
Let's say Ben had been drafted one spot lower to West Coast, one spot higher to Carlton or another spot higher to GWS and had produced a similar career to that forged at Tigerland and he became available by delisting or as a treade.
Would you be advocating and trumpeting that he be recruited to Richmond?

Why would you buy a lemon?

There's almost nobody trumpeting Lennon on this board. Big difference saying somebody is not quite good enough, or suited to the football we are playing, which it seems he isn't, to somebody saying delist the trash.
And no we (the majority) would not look at a trade, nor I think will anyone else. But he deserves some respect either way.
