Think back on his career and try to remember him ever being tackled, or getting a free kick for over the shoulder because his head is over the ball. Reckon you'll have to watch a lot of replays. Compare that with Rioli and Castagna who go hard in the air or on the ground.

yeah fair point, Butler has lost his role, he needs to be making tackles and applying pressure the rest is a bonus
We were spoilt in 2017 and to a lesser extent in 2018 with getting away with 'roll players', players that were good at a few things but far from complete players. This was mainly due to having a very strong top 10 players. Now some of those bit players are being exposed. We brought in players like Stack and Ross who seem complete players (with time) and look at the difference they make. Butler has to add quite a few more strings to his bow, or other more complete players will take his place. Baker for one, Bolton with 36 possessions in the VFL for another. They are young players rounding out their games. Frustrates me that Butler can't do it.

I agree with everyone that he’s fallen away but I don’t believe it’s arrogance, workrate, laziness or any of those things.
I think he’s suffering from a pretty acute dose of lack of self belief and Isn’t the only one, he’s just the standout.
Some of these guys were around at an unbelievable time right in the sweet spot and the whole thing picked them up and they couldn’t do a thing wrong, would have been a feeling of pure appreciation for how rare and special it was for those who’d done the hard yards, but for the young guys like Butler walking into that first season they've known nothing else and now it’d be “****! This AFL caper is really bloody hard!” Mistakes lead to more mistakes, confidence goes out the window and he’s playing accordingly.

Butler has never been a contested ball winner, or one touch player, to say it nicely, but as the pressure ramps up without our better players around him, his deficiencies are standing out more imo.
He's always played our gameplans better than the higher skilled Boltons and Stengles, which is why he was always played in front of them.
Upgrade him? Sure, but theres still noone taking his spot off him.

Agree with this except the last sentence. He has already played VFL and will most likely go back there with about 4 good players to come back in, and a lineup following. He has not improved whereas others have. Even Rioli is struggling but is a much more rounded player. Bolton with 36 in the VFL may not even get a gig.

Agree with RD except, that it only applies to his work in the contest and around the ball. Definitely not confident. But it doesn't take confidence when away from the contest, a handball or kick away. It takes mental application and will. I see neither at the moment. He reminds me of when he was nearly dropped off the list end of 2016
The Richmond half-forward has battled for two seasons to earn his first game, with repeated knee injuries in 2015 setting him back 12 months.
"It's been a long time coming … there were a few times where I was kind of in a dark place and questioned whether I was good enough to be here," Butler said.
"Form wasn't going my way but I kept working hard and results came my way.
"I've put in a fair bit of hard work the past year and it's paid off. It's a very exciting time for me and my family, and I can't wait. I'm pretty pumped for it."
It's so hard when you find yourself back near the above again. The mountain looks steep. At his very best he's a match winner - it's such a fine line!

Don't understand how a 5ft 5 crumber needs to continually toe poke the ball along the ground instead of picking it up

This is spot on with Buttler has lost his spark due to lack of confidence.. 2017 he would take the game on and most the time be involved in amazing passages of play as he was full of confidence and most things he tried came off. Fast forward to now and he lacks that much confidence he either plays it safe and stuffs it up or takes it on and is like a deer in the headlights and inevitably stuffs it up too.. In 2017 I would of said keep Butler over Castagna but give me George hands down now, Has to be traded at the end of the year and we will be lucky to get a 3rd round pick

Lambert, rioli and Higgins are the 3 small forwards add 2 talls in Lynch and Jack and a medium in caddy with baker on the bench leaves no spot for butler or costana in my opinion
Naish replaces Ellis on a wing with Bolton on the other, Macintosh on the.bench as back up.
Dusty, Cotch, Prestia, Ross and Nank in the guts.
Astbury, Grimes, Edward's, Vlastuin, Stack, Houli in defence with Balta on the bench as cover.

Have we got a game plan problem because compared to a Kevin Bartlett up forward in our premiership year, or a Billings for Saint Kilda, or a Eddie Betts, or a Gyran Miers, or a Gary Ablett jnr, what the hell are Baker and Butler supposed to be doing to make us a better team??? I do not understand the roles of these players they are supposed to be doing and fail to comprehend the value they supposedly are offering up doing what they are doing.
Its a bit like Nason, what are they supposed to be doing to make us better?? Is not Edwards simply a better version with better skills and handball.
Is it not like Breust is more effective because he is 184 cm and kicks a lot more goals with more accuracy. Is it not that simple or what am I missing???
Or Papley is a better version in the Swans because he can kick a goal, take a mark and contribute in the guts for the Swans being a bit more solid and tougher being better by offering more versatility?

A average player can always look good in a premiership side butler fits that mould
He is the type when we are winning he'll bob up and kick some nice goals basically he is the cream of others hard work he just cant get into the game when we need him ive seen enough.
