Unfortunately for Leroy he wasn't injured in the second half of the year so when the team is travelling poorly all his flaws will get exposed.

it would have been better if he ripped his hammy and missed the last 6 weeks. people would have been talking him up and potting the guy out there when we are getting smashed.

he got absolutely murdered by the umps in the second half of the year after the staging incident. It was a disgrace.

he'll be good for us next year.

Hey, it's true. Their job is to crumb off the big guys and be ahead of the play. They're natural front-runners
Milne and Betts did pretty bloody well in mediocre sides this year for front runners.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: every player forward or back of centre is reliant on the guys in the middle.

Tall forwards can struggle without the supply, tall backs can be crucified with constant entries and lack of defensive help.

It's a nice little theory that I think sounded clever at the time, but it's simply not true.

Sorry, the two best small forwards since the turn of the century did well in crap sides. These two are exceptional examples, that's hardly great evidence. Nobody is delusional enough to think Jetta will be ever as good as them, right?

Okay, I'll retract my statement... On LeCras: No Kennedy or Darling

Kong

The only in that list is a true small forward is Jeff farmer.

Prior to the bye we averaged 61.1 Inside 50's Vs after the bye 50.6. Does anyone think being a small fwd, would life be easier having the ball in your fwd 50 or having to push up to the half back line just to get a touch and then sprinting back to your fwd line to try and steal a goal? Cant remember exactly until which round but Jetta was leading the club in score involvements early in the season even when Crameri was near the top of the Coleman.

If he stays he can only play forward pocket. Simply not smart enough to play up the ground and play structured footy but does have value on his best form as a small forward.

His problem isn't front running. Although he plays his best footy when we are up and running (generally in the first half of a year) his best games are when he is tackling, pressuring and attacking the ball.

He doesn't really do a lot of finishing others work either. Davey, for example, is a very effective front runner.

How many of them were actually crumbers, though?
Farmer, Johnson, Medhurst, Williams, Philthy Phil, Dixon, Green & LeCras (you can add Ebert & Monfries, too) basically played as miniature full-forwards, getting a lot of ball kicked to them - quite a few of them became "worse" when their team finally sorted out proper tall forwards.

Leroy's not likely to be taking as many marks as those guys, just not that type.
That doesn't necessarily mean he can't be a very dangerous crumbing/flank player, in a good side.

Darren Bewick had a massive game in a prelim.

If St Kilda's smalls had been more clinical on the day they would have had the 09 flag wrapped up at half time.

Then there are guys like Shane Ellen and Darren Jarmen (or "man") who won grand finals as "small forwards".

I think it is more a case of small forwards being forgotten about during finals because it is during finals that the ridiculous cliche driven analysis of the game is at its worst. Seriously how many times have the champion key forwards dominated a GF in the last 20 years?

Bruno

Don't forget that Bewick could rotate through the midfield - And it was only later in his career that bewick spent most of his time forward.

Bewick... a very, very good player.

I think Jetta has nearly run his race. IMO, the thing that works in his favour is Davey's age. His brother has dropped away pretty rapidly, maybe Essendon have concerns that Alwyn might do the same.

Exactly, spends to much time wondering where to run when opposition is off and running, same can be said up forward at times.

How would Colyer go as a small forward?
