Interesting article. Two clubs whose supporters pride themselves on bleating about how hard they do things nothing more than cheats themselves. Only difference is the either weren't caught or were given a slap on the wrist as anything more would have buried them.
Not saying that Essendon and other clubs should be pardoned but when the dominant team of the previous decade and the dominant team of the century are doing it then you would be wondering how best to compete with them. It’s a bit of a snow-ball effect in that regard.

Don Scott has been known to be a master of hyperbole simply to troll people. That he talked about a secret bank account in Tasmania doesn't necessarily mean it's true.

It’s fairly common knowledge that all clubs were dodgy as hell through the 80’s and 90’s - plenty of brown paper bags, and well paid jobs that they weren’t qualified for for family members (or for the players themselves - check how many of them were ‘stockbrokers’ or ‘bankers’ during the 90’s!).

Technology, and a far narrower interpretation of third party dealings means that it would be pretty difficult to get it done now.

Wayne Johnston of all people was a 'stockbroker' thanks to John Elliot....

And based on that article (and I'm quite sceptical about its legitimacy) Hawthorn were the worst.
The worst?

Seems like we were the best at it!:p

Agreed, but it probably still happens, one way or another.

Players would get access to investment opportunities etc. that provide them with legitimate earnings, set up (& maybe even managed) by the club, yet completely outside of their footy related income/s.

The more successful clubs probs do it better & it probs contributes to them being more successful.

If the evidence is there, all those premierships should be voided. It would hurt to lose 96 but that would be softened by the confirmation that Essendon haven't won a single legitimate final in the entire AFL period.

Removal of premiership would certainly deter clubs. AFL does not like that script though .
Fair play to the NRL, no dicking around there.
Suspect if it wasn’t a Melbourne team the storm would be a lot less severe.
Fines only, some cap restrictions, but that’s all.

One of the lowest judgment calls by the AFL ever.
A former Carlton guy wasn’t a big wig at the time in head office, nah ofcourse not.
