I think the story with Richie was that he didn't mind Birmingham taking the piss out of him, but he didn't want his wife or any presence of his wife on the albums - then Birmingham did it anyway.
Ritchie had cultiaveted this clean image, but he had a poor relationship with his Sons and 1st wife that he wanted to bury.

Both Bill and Tony liked the 12th man stuff by all accounts, it helped to turn them into cult figures, Richie didn't enjoy it as much.

They were great commentators and great characters, it wouldn't be the same if the 12th man did voices for Hayden and Warner.

Even though they deserve to have the piss taken out of them even moreso than Bill and Tony.
Bill and Tony took the piss with eachother but they were the very best of mates. Wasn't Bill 1 of the last people to see Tony before he passed? He wasn't the same as a commentator with his pal not there anymore I felt.

Bill & Tony both reckoned Billy Birmingham extended their careers by about 10 years. Tony loved it because he got heaps of cashies out of it

He was so good at picking out not only their voices but the back and forth between the two of them.

The best commentary teams over the years genuinely have that back and forth ‘niggle’ and as much as everyone, including me, complains about cheerleading, it does make for some compelling commentary if they can actually marry up the right guys and keep them commentating together regularly.
Unfortunately the teams seem so transient and most commentators now, especially the international ones, have several broadcasters that they work with at once so you rarely get those partnerships where they butt heads.

Vaughan is one that is starting to antagonise a few of the Fox guys but it’s very lowbrow and low key.

But even when you look at, for example, one of the most iconic bits of rugby league coverage of the last 40 years - Mark Coyne’s famous State of Origin try in the dying seconds for Qld in 1994. As soon as he crosses you can hear Fatty Vautin yelling ‘Ooooooh YEAHHHHH!!! What about that one STERLO!!!!!’

The first thing he wanted to do was lip his NSW supporting co-commentator 😂😂

It made for one of the best pairings on TV having that pair stick it to each other, same as Bill and Tony.

It’s a shame that there isn’t more like it anymore.
As well as the lack of voices with any character it’s probably another reason Billy has no one to take the piss out of

Part of this is why I like 7 more than Fox. I feel like the Fox commentators act like they're a bunch on "in" group and talk like they're all the best mates that every lived. The rubbish they speak annoys me. I get they're perhaps trying to take a more casual approach to commentary as opposed to the more formal type of the past, but for the it doesn't work.

7 feels a bit more traditional in their broadcasting, and I find their commentators commentate the game more, if that makes sense, and don't chat like the best group of mates there ever was.

I think the vintage 9 crew got the balance right. They were actually very tight but how that was reflected in the commentary was they weren't afraid to challenge each other or have the odd bit of niggle. Further to that though they actually spoke on the game very well and weren't afraid to challenge things constructively. I remember Richie was more than happy to sign off a broadcast being critical of what he saw on field.

I don't even notice the ads tbh. They're between overs when you're not paying attention anyway and find they're good sometimes in breaking things up. There's times I wish I had an extra replay, but there's also times where not much is happening and it breaks the coverage up - and they usually get to the replay once back, anyway. Pros and cons, which is why 2 broadcasters is a great thing imo.

I think 7’s coverage has improved as they have gained experience with broadcasting cricket & Fox has kinda reverted towards 9’s ‘boys club’ vibes a little.

7 has great ‘ball-by-ball’ callers with Tim Lane, Alison Mitchell & Alister Nicholson (who did 2nd test). Imo, Fox only has Adam Gilchrist & Isa Guha who compete with the above listed on 7. Even Brayshaw is better with cricket than he is with the AFL.

Fox is being boosted by having 4K and no ad breaks, otherwise 7 has started being more in depth and caught up with Fox.

I think Fox being the world feed should be in depth and 7 should be for the casual local fans watching.

There's two pretty clear & different philosophical approaches towards commentary.

It's almost perfectly encapsulated with the Channel 7 "raise to speak" microphone, while Fox have the hands-free.

One invites insight, letting the game breathe, and letting the players do the talking.
The other invites verbal diarrhoea and makes the commentators feel like the stars.

makes the commentators feel like the stars.
as demonstrated by their 30 min highlights package of the commentators own work each test

Further to that, the microphone's 7 have (and everywhere else around the world) means commentators actually think before they speak, they think about the viewer and the game.

I doubt Isa Guha's mistake would have occurred on 7.
that doesn't sound like ch7 at all...

Most people at 7, I don’t think this applies to Hayden & Langer. I will say tho that during today’s play Hayden was better, less yelling. Maybe someone told him to speak normally instead of yelling 😂
