Whilst the article was a fluff piece, I am certain that clubs will approach players with big money regardless of how remote the possibility is that they will land them.

Why?
Because it is in every club's best interests to make sure that no other club is getting a bargain for their superstar players.
So by freo offering Petrie big dollars, they are pushing up his pay expectations when negotiating his next contract with North.
If that means we end up paying overs for him, then even better for freo and the rest of the competition

The only sensationalist story with any flavour is Buddy.
