Past #8: Daniel Wells - joins Collingwood as a FA - North get pick #32 as compensation

Wellsy is one of the players I pay money for the kids and I to go watch. Understand the clinical views about his age, injury prone etc, but that doesn't change the attachment we as supporters get to particular players and in this case I'd be devastated to see my long time favourite player leave.

Hes 38 ffs and we need a rebuild. Did you watch Harvey's game on Saturday night, he was putrid. Yeah got some kicks but not one, ONE tackle he laid all night. Thats pathetic in a final. He supposed to show leadership but all he did was make bad decisions and executed poorly. I love Boomer but he is cooked and for him to put the club in a position to make a decision before round 22 is on him not the club.

On Daniel Wells, if he leaves and states the reason was the delisting of the 4 then better he goes because thats feeble. North gifted games to Drew and Dal and tolerated Harvey's lack of defensive game for the back end of his career, any other team would have dropped and or delisted way before we did.

There is a lot of misdirected anger going on within our supporter base

I'll give you the club had no choice. If I was in charge I would have told the players concerned that list management won't be finalised until the end of the season. Who is in charge? The President and Coach? Or the players? :stern look

It's all well and good to speculate as to what you'd say from the safety of a keyboard and tell everyone how you'd be better than the professionals paid to do the job. But I dare say that if you had to look those guys in the eye after working with them for over 5 years, I doubt that nerve would hold.

It's a working relationship, give and take, and out of respect for the players, I'm sure the right decision was made for the best of the club.

Love wellsy but amongst the brilliance he goes missing when the pressure is on and Brad has protected him and i feel he does want to be the main man. Which he will become so sadly he will be moving on it seems. Part of me hopes he breaks down if he does go to Collingwood just because it is collingwood

Where are those posters that defended Wells and his legacy with their lives? They seem to not be here?

I want Wellsy to stay.

As with the other 4, he's played over 200 games of AFL football and if his body wasn't cooked as a young man then he'd be up near 300. He's the most purely talented footballer on our list and the type of player we desperately need most. I believe he's leaving (if he's leaving) because he's annoyed by the way the club has handled this transition from premiership contention to aggressive reset or rebuild or whatever the **** the hierarchy have decided to characterise our list management strategy. He has seen his mates get shafted, told they're no longer required, and in his case, effectively seen his chances at a premiership in his career at this club get tossed out with the bath water. I feel for him because of the players on our list, he is one who deserves a premiership for sticking through the shit times at this club. I have been entranced and enthralled by the football he has played and every time he creates space without moving I wish I was a thousandth the footballer he was. He has a legacy at this football club and he should and will be celebrated as one of our legends.

I also believe the reported salary values and demands about lengths of contract is too much for a player that isn't necessarily the definition of durable and who in all honesty has not played to the value of his contract this time around. Brayshaw might get a fair bit wrong and I don't necessarily agree with him calling Wells out in the media - it will probably backfire and see him pushed further towards leaving - but he's dead set right that Wellsy has been well remunerated by the club.

If Wellsy leaves then the aggressive reset is truly aggressive. It might have been forced further than the club would have liked it gone, but it will be on. And I for one am extremely interested in seeing what the club looks like in December if Wellsy leaves. It was already going to be interesting with the departure of the Fab 4, but now that it's the Fantastic Five, if it is five, it places the club at a precipice. We can either jump or back off. I am fascinated to see which decision we make.

Do you know he has the shits re the Fab 4 departure as fact or rumour?

It's my belief. I think it's a combination of being annoyed at the departures and his contract demands not being met. I could live with the latter, but the former shits me.

I agree, based on evaluating the facts in front of us.

It's unlikely to be just money, because that can still be negotiated and he's rejected bigger offers in the past to stay loyal. It's unlikely to be "for a flag" if Collingwood is his destination. Even if it was Hawthorn, tbh, because their window would appear to be shutting right now. There has to be something that has made him want out.

The way the president spoke today, you can sort of see what's driving it, frankly.

Has been tagged for 10 years. With Boomer gone no wonder he wants to leave.

Will be 4th in line to be tagged at Pies and can run riot.

May as well leave a club to do a total rebuild.

Just don't want Mayne or Zac that are a waste of time.

Back to the draft I say !!!

I think if you ever met me and had a 5 minute conversation about the topic with me you would soon realise that I would have handled the situation the way I said I would. So yeah "Turn it Up". :stern look

I always defend him and I'm still here. If he leaves, I don't blame him but will miss him. And if he leaves, something is not right within our footy club.[/QUOTE]

Can you expand on the bolded?

I disagree completely. An offer has been made, the club imo shouldn't and won't be held over a barrel by him.

You think he deserves...?

lol, I still can't tag or quote.

Yeah King of the Road, you must be thinking of another Stern Looker ......................

If Wells or his management is asking for 3 years its probably because of security due to what happened to Boomer, Dal Santo, Spud and Petrie, he doesn't want to be next in line post 2017. I don't think he should get 3 years with his age and body condition, but he should be retained. He is the only player left on our list with genuine pace and skill, we will be the slowest, ugliest, least skillful team in the comp by far if he leaves.

JB has done a lot right, and has made his fair shape of mistakes, but **** me his exiting couldn't put him in a worse light. It's like he is angry that his term is coming to an end and now he is taking out his frustrations at the club itself.

Agree things haven't been handled very well, all the way back to the $80,000 fine but it's hardly doom and gloom if Wells leaves, if anything it will demand that we draft kids with genuine pace.
