Should've let him go at the end of last year. Sigh.

No way he plays on next year. Hope he just announces it soon.
Agree. I'd genuinely have rated Fletcher a better chance to go on in 2016 than Winders.

He should have retired last year, in retrospect.

He did retire and Hird talked him about of it. Hird's biggest weakness was sentimentality which was always going to be the case from the outset.
Yep. I'll rephrase- he should have stayed with his original decision.

He is the perfect candidate for what could have been.

Such a smart and skilled player, if he had better luck injury wise he would have been remembered as a much higher player in Essendon's history.

Bloody oath. Can't remember exactly how long ago, but he was top 5 in the browlow about six-eight years ago after about 8 rounds. Then of course, injury struck.

How I read it at first...

Would have played every game at Richmond. Their fitness staff would have got him ready.

...meanwhile over at Essendon.

Certainly no suggestions that he would have miraculously avoided any injury concerns at Richmond...

But what was he really going to offer us this year? Took the list position of a youngster who could've offered us more. Yes... hindsight is a wonderful thing... but we've known for a decade how injury prone this guy is.

Hird's legacy lives on.

...well after the charming conversation above.

Sad that he wasn't able to get much of an opportunity this year, but it's obviously the best decision to retire.
Thankyou Licka!

I hold the opposite view. He was playing some superb football, his speed and goal sense was invaluable and I don't think it was a mistake to reverse the retirement decision. Obviously this wasn't the finish he was after, and it's certainly not the finish that Winders deserves, but I'm happy that he played on. There always would have been a "what if?" had he not.

Thanks for the memories and for all of your service, Jason. One of our most exciting and talented players in a lean period of success for the football club. Hope he joins Fletch and we hoist them off the 'G this afternoon.

His form at times last year suggested he was still a very good player. He also managed to play 16 games. Almost as many games (19) he had played in the previous 3 years combined. I can see why we talked him of retirement, where Hird thought the list was at, and what he could contribute on field.
