Yeah I agree with you, most big crowds would of been in prime time slots, they might not even get 80000 this week, I just hope they do cos we haven't had one since 1971

South Melbourne played one home game at the MCG vs. Carlton in 1981 and drew a crowd of 24388.

They played a scattering of home games at Waverly but only got over 30K 4 times.

'79 & '80 vs. Essendon.
'78 vs. Richmond and North Melbourne.


So in answer to your question... no they didn't.

Carlton vs Hawthorn have filled the dome twice to capacity in the last 4 years. How many more would have been at the G if it were there? last time we played Hawthorn at the G there were 69k,
I was turned away from the gate at the one where Buddy kicked his 100th and i wasn't the only one.
Geelong a few weeks ago another game that would have drawn 70k+ at the G, it did last year....and that was on a monday, a friday night always gets more.
Saying that Essendon and Carlton aren't hampered by the Domes capacity and fixturing is just ridiculous......


In the next negotiations i hope Carlton play the Interstaters at the Dome and all others at the G.

When the AFL own the Dome they can then schedule who they like there. They will only need to breakeven then - not make a profit.

My bet is they'll make a deal with the MCC to move all games likely to attract north of 45,000 to the MCG, and switch other games in the other direction. (Though they'll want to give teams like Freo, Gold Coast and Port a run around at least once or twice a year at the MCG).

I find it fascinating that Ess v Carl have drawn 80+ only 4 times, equal to us and Geelong.

Well, there have also been 8 other Ess vs Carl crowds between 70,000-79,999, in addition to the four above 80,000. (so 12 above 70,000)

Coll vs Gee have only one between 70,000-79,000, in addition to the four above 80,000 (so, 5 above 70,000)

Interestingly Essendon vs Carlton is still the only home and away match to ever get 90,000 on a non-public holiday (it was a Friday night match in 2000)

Did you know there has never been a home and away game that has drawn 90,000 on a Saturday or Sunday? (unless the Saturday or Sunday was a public holiday like Anzac day)

That would surprise a lot of people, but it's true. There has NEVER been a crowd of 90,000 on a Saturday or a Sunday since the VFL-AFL began.

Also, did you know there was never a crowd in the 80,000's at Waverley? The biggest crowd there was 92,935 (Queens Birthday 1981), and the second biggest was 79,326 and both were H&A games. But there was never a crowd of 80,000-and-something.

Carlton and Essendon have drawn alot of games b/w 70k to 80k. Clearly the biggest non Collingwood game when it comes to crowds.

Carl V Ess is by no means "clearly" the biggest non Collingwood draw.

Since 1995

Carl V Ess average attendance across 33 H+A games at the G 62,695
Rich V Ess average attendance across 28 H+A games at the G 61,735.

The Carlton game a mere 1.5% ahead and in those years Carlton have finalled 7 times to Richmonds 2 times.

Form going into games affects attendance. Take into account the greater percentage of games in which Carlton went into the Essendon match in the top 8 as compared to Richmond and I strongly suspect you couldn't put a hairsbreath between the 2 match ups as attendance draws. Certainly neither is "clearly" a bigger draw than the other.

The surprisingly low figue for Essendon indicates the central importance of form and ladder position to any club's ability to host blockbusting crowds.

No one in his right mind supposes that Essendon are anything but a huge draw comparable to Collingwood all things being equal yet a period of one finals appearance in 6 years sees them unable to host 70+ attendances with any regularity apart from the holiday game on ANZAC despite the across the board growth in attendances.

Absolutely true. I doubt very much if there are any examples of a Carlton game which was a legitimate chance of an 80K crowd ever being played at Docklands.

The fact is that all Melbourne clubs play more or less all their big games at the MCG. When was the last time Carlton played Essendon away from the G for example?

I think round 22 2008 would have got at least 80k at the G. Both Buddy and Fev going for 100 goals.

Nowadays Collingwood tends to draw a big crowd against most of the Vic teams with Carlton (history) and Essendon (anzac day) their biggest games.
