Would be 20,000 less if it was on Sunday instead

I wouldn't think many 80000+ games would of been on Sunday, most would of been Anzac day, Friday nights, Saturday nights, other public holidays and grand final replays, would like to see how many 80000+ games have been on Sunday

Yeah just saying the holiday adds about 20k onto the crowd. If the Pies played Stkilda this week on Queens birthday they'd get over 80,000 as opposed to 63,000

Yeah I agree with you, most big crowds would of been in prime time slots, they might not even get 80000 this week, I just hope they do cos we haven't had one since 1971

Five of those have come against Collingwood over the last 5 years (6 by the end of the year - all over 75,000, possibly 5 over 80,000)

One of those games was against Carlton last year (72k last year) while Geelong-Hawthorn might draw 75,000 for the 3rd time in 4 years

Nine 70,000+ (probably eight 75,000+) home and away fixtures in 5 years is pretty impressive, more so considering they play 7-8 home games at Kardina Park and have probably only played 15 games at the MCG in that time

The Hawks are probably on track for another 2 in round 14 (maybe) and round 15 as well

Based on the draw there could be another 9 crowds of 70k + allowing for reasonable weather and form;

Rd 12
Geel v Haw
Melb v Coll
Rd 14
Haw v Ess
Rd 15
Rich v Carl
Coll v Haw
Rd 17
Carl v Coll
Rd 18
Ess v Carl
Rd 19
Coll v Ess
Rd 24
Coll v Geel

Made me LOL, as every chance it's true

Did South Melbourne ever play regular home games at the MCG or Waverley prior to their relocation to Sydney?

South Melbourne played one home game at the MCG vs. Carlton in 1981 and drew a crowd of 24388.

They played a scattering of home games at Waverly but only got over 30K 4 times.

'79 & '80 vs. Essendon.
'78 vs. Richmond and North Melbourne.

So in answer to your question... no they didn't.

Agree. :thumbsu:

Carlton vs Hawthorn have filled the dome twice to capacity in the last 4 years. How many more would have been at the G if it were there? last time we played Hawthorn at the G there were 69k,
I was turned away from the gate at the one where Buddy kicked his 100th and i wasn't the only one.
Geelong a few weeks ago another game that would have drawn 70k+ at the G, it did last year....and that was on a monday, a friday night always gets more.
Saying that Essendon and Carlton aren't hampered by the Domes capacity and fixturing is just ridiculous......

In the next negotiations i hope Carlton play the Interstaters at the Dome and all others at the G.

When the AFL own the Dome they can then schedule who they like there. They will only need to breakeven then - not make a profit.

My bet is they'll make a deal with the MCC to move all games likely to attract north of 45,000 to the MCG, and switch other games in the other direction. (Though they'll want to give teams like Freo, Gold Coast and Port a run around at least once or twice a year at the MCG).

GO TIGES!!!

I find it fascinating that Ess v Carl have drawn 80+ only 4 times, equal to us and Geelong.

Well, there have also been 8 other Ess vs Carl crowds between 70,000-79,999, in addition to the four above 80,000. (so 12 above 70,000)

Coll vs Gee have only one between 70,000-79,000, in addition to the four above 80,000 (so, 5 above 70,000)

Interestingly Essendon vs Carlton is still the only home and away match to ever get 90,000 on a non-public holiday (it was a Friday night match in 2000)

Did you know there has never been a home and away game that has drawn 90,000 on a Saturday or Sunday? (unless the Saturday or Sunday was a public holiday like Anzac day)

That would surprise a lot of people, but it's true. There has NEVER been a crowd of 90,000 on a Saturday or a Sunday since the VFL-AFL began.

Also, did you know there was never a crowd in the 80,000's at Waverley? The biggest crowd there was 92,935 (Queens Birthday 1981), and the second biggest was 79,326 and both were H&A games. But there was never a crowd of 80,000-and-something.

Would have expected Collingwood and Essendon to be much, much closer honestly. Knowing the top 10-20 H&A may have skewed me. I think I expected more from Essendon and not less from Collingwood, for the record.

Interesting thread, by the way

Carlton and Essendon have drawn alot of games b/w 70k to 80k. Clearly the biggest non Collingwood game when it comes to crowds.

Carl V Ess is by no means "clearly" the biggest non Collingwood draw.

Since 1995

Carl V Ess average attendance across 33 H+A games at the G 62,695
Rich V Ess average attendance across 28 H+A games at the G 61,735.

The Carlton game a mere 1.5% ahead and in those years Carlton have finalled 7 times to Richmonds 2 times.

Form going into games affects attendance. Take into account the greater percentage of games in which Carlton went into the Essendon match in the top 8 as compared to Richmond and I strongly suspect you couldn't put a hairsbreath between the 2 match ups as attendance draws. Certainly neither is "clearly" a bigger draw than the other.

Another indicator: Home Games (70,000+)

Collingwood 37 (Select games at the MCG since 1980s, 2000- MCG)
Essendon 25 (1992-1999 MCG, Select games at MCG since 2000)
Richmond 23 (1965 – MCG)
Carlton 22 (Select games at the MCG since the 1990s)
Melbourne 16 (1897- MCG)
Hawthorn 7 (1992-1999 Waverley, 2000- MCG)
Geelong 4 (Select MCG games since the late 1980s)
St Kilda 2 (1992-1999 at Waverley)

Looking at these numbers Carlton and Geelong are the clubs that really stands out given that for most of their history they have played games at Princes Park and Kardina Park (aside from the obvious re: Collingwood)

Melbourne have clearly had a clear advantage having spent 110 years at the MCG (12 pre 1971) ditto Richmond (14 pre 1983)

Interestingly over the last 10 years the numbers have squared up to an extent

Collingwood 13
Carlton 8
Richmond 6
Essendon 5
Hawthorn 5
Geelong 3
Melbourne 2
St Kilda 0

We didn’t have a 70,000+ crowd in Melbourne between 2003-05, interestingly Essendon have only played in 5 home games that have drawn 70,000+ (2 ANZAC Day games) as compared to 17 pre 2000 (mostly 1992-1999) while Melbourne have a pretty strong showing (albeit all QB games)

Not surprisingly all Hawthorn (2008 -) and Geelong (2007 - ) have been over the last 5 years

Richmond and Carlton's numbers are obviously strong given there lack of success over the preceding 10 years...both are stronger than Essendon (who have played in 4 finals series compared to Carlton (2) and Richmond (0))

*In 2000-01 Collingwood played 5 home games that pulled 70k+, Essendon 3 games, Richmond 3 games, Carlton 2 games and Melbourne 1 game.

With regards to the Home/Away game split

Remarkably every game that Melbourne has drawn 70,000+ to (all 16) were home games, 7/8 Hawthorn games have been home games while 23/34 Richmond games were also home games.

By comparison 12/16 Geelong games were away games, 25/52 Essendon games, 25/47 Carlton games were away games and 42/79 Collingwood games were away games

The surprisingly low figue for Essendon indicates the central importance of form and ladder position to any club's ability to host blockbusting crowds.

No one in his right mind supposes that Essendon are anything but a huge draw comparable to Collingwood all things being equal yet a period of one finals appearance in 6 years sees them unable to host 70+ attendances with any regularity apart from the holiday game on ANZAC despite the across the board growth in attendances.

Of course they CAN but they HAVE'NT.

Absolutely true. I doubt very much if there are any examples of a Carlton game which was a legitimate chance of an 80K crowd ever being played at Docklands.

The fact is that all Melbourne clubs play more or less all their big games at the MCG. When was the last time Carlton played Essendon away from the G for example?

I think round 22 2008 would have got at least 80k at the G. Both Buddy and Fev going for 100 goals.

Very interesting stats.

Also shows how any "big 3 or 4" can change.

In the 50's and early 60's there was a "big 2" Melbourne and Collingwood.

By the late 60's through to the 80's the "big 3" were Richmond, Carlton and Collingwood.

In the 90's the "big 3" changed to Carlton, Essendon and Collingwood.

Nowadays Collingwood tends to draw a big crowd against most of the Vic teams with Carlton (history) and Essendon (anzac day) their biggest games.

But the matches played at KP wouldn't draw 80,000 if played at the MCG
