Retired #9: Brendon Goddard - Retires a winner - Thanks for everything BJ

He’s slow, his disposal costs us goals, he has no composure and he continually has unprofessional altercations with our players.

Yeah he gets lots of the footy, but you will find that is the case for most drifting half backs who are unaccountable.

A great career but he is cooked.

No composure? BJ is composure personified.
The turn overs i'm assuming you're referring to are derived out of his role to be our designated play-maker from the back line..
Have a look at Baguely in a one on one contest for the lack of composure you speak of..

I'm one of those people that don't care whether or not my doctor has a good bedside manner - just that they are correct.

He's got a better footballing mind than pretty much everyone in our side.

If what he's saying is accurate, or needs to be said, then I really don't care how he says it.

Lore Phone I think with all of the psychological profiling clubs do - at an individual-level and more importantly at a team-level - players would be aware of BJ's personality-type and hopefully his leadership-style won't have a toxic reaction.

If I were a player and BJ didn't "finger-point" I would probably wonder what was up and whether or not he still cared. Not acting like himself may even send a worse message.

Let's not forget that he always been like this and has been voted into the leadership group many times, even once as Captain.

Psychological profiling will tell you that not all players are the same, and that you can't speak the way Goddard does to all players - that's why coaches like Tom Hafey belonged in the 60's & 70's.
Because... a) one player might say 'fair enough' & try harder; b) one might remonstrate & want to belt him (aka Zaka), and c) one might lose interest (& most likely respect) like Joe did.

I've played (at a pretty high level) with a guy like who was exactly like Goddard. Most of my team mates wanted to punch his lights out during games & used to totally ignore him... and even though he was one of the better players & a good guy off the field, he isn't overly welcome at premiership gatherings by some of us. The way he spoke to his team mates became a joke amongst our opposition.

Goddard's message may be fine & valid...but his body language stinks. Passion isn't an excuse - he needs to pull his head in, because I don't think he is leading by example. He had the most ineffective & useless 33 possession game I've ever seen, yesterday.

Nobody should criticise Goddard for being passionate, at times he seems like the only guy out there that cares. If there were any justice he would have maintained his role as Captain after the ban, but ticket and membership sales ya know....

The coaches seem too scared to give players a spray these days. But somebody needs too. I'd be giving Goddard another year whether it's as a player or coach.

I love Goddard's passion & think most people would. He just goes about it the wrong way sometimes.

Everyone deserves a spray at some point. but there is a right & wrong way to do it, and a time and place. You NEVER give the opposition ammunition.

As an extreme example, one of the best players in Essendon's history had a brother who was, by all accounts, a better player than him. I heard this first hand from the player, and his family backed him up.
He came to Essendon to train, copped a massive spray on his first night, said 'stuff this', got on the train, and never came back. A different personality might have just rolled with it.

Not sure how he can bake others after some of his defensive actions on Anzac Day. He got outbodied by James Aish and some of his defensive efforts in the air were comical. Problem with Goddard and the rest of the side is they pick and choose when to go. It should be a non negotiable.

I have no issue with a bake in general. Only problem is the person delivering it is not Luke Hodge, Joel Selwood, James Hird, Michael Voss.

Fair dinkum. Who?

I have no problem with venting a little frustration in a one-on-one, but do it in private.

I've worked in many places, and everyone knows the professional way about it is deliver criticism away from those around you.

If the game was on the line to the wire and the scoreboard was a 1 point difference - then maybe.

But at that point? Ride out the game, go find the people you want to speak to and give your thoughts in private. You should be able to take on criticism in order to grow but there's also ways of delivering it properly. Criticism is hard to swallow but doing it behind closed doors injects a bit of indirect respect in the matter. It's about people skills and knowing how to understand social behavior.

Jeez AFL footy is a joke. Arguments happen all the time on the field. Of course they do - you have people passionate and fired up. Anybody who’s ever played footy knows that. We win and it’s hailed as “strong leadership”.

The key is you work it out in the break or after the game and all of Goddard’s teammates (current and former) say he always does this.

Who cares? Goddard had a crack at them and they fired back with their opinion. So what?

And it was Zaka (a senior player) and Daniher (a member of the leadership group). He’s not having a crack at Guelfi ffs.

And don’t even get me started on the “he can’t talk because he doesn’t pick up anybody”. That’s his role ffs. Are people that thick? He can’t have an opinion because he’s playing the role he’s meant to play?

What a load of shit.

If it's such a common, normal sort of thing, how come Goddard is the only one who sends the media into the stratosphere over it?

Why don't I ever hear about Joel Selwood or Trent Cotchin (or any other captain or leader at any club) and their passionate and direct leadership styles?

Maybe I just live in a bubble idk. The temper tantrums I hear about in the media are foolish young players in bars and nightclubs, not 'leaders'.

Goddard has a punchable head so the masses love to hate him. The media just feed it.
