Both clubs he's represented have been faced with adversity yet despite this, has always committed himself 100%.

Unfortunate he couldn't achieve what he had hoped with Essendon.

Ultimately, I think this is the right decision. We have an abundance of young and ready players, waiting to play this role (Francis, Ridley, Redman, Gleeson).

Never liked the fact that he pointed fingers at others for making errors yet made them himself; will always admire what he gave us during the saga.

Good luck in your future endeavors Brendon.

Much love for Brendon; it’s been a hell of a six years in the red and black. Not the six years he would have hoped to have, but that’s not an ounce his fault.

He unwittingly walked into a complete shit storm and never once flinched or complained at his lot, and far from that, actually stood up as a leader for the club and captained us when we hit rock bottom.

And aside from that, he’s played some genuinely great football too. He deserved more and I feel bad for him that we couldn’t deliver.

It’s the right decision I think, but nonetheless, when a piece of the fabric goes, it’s impossible not to be sad.

Well done Brendon, you’re a champion of two clubs and of the game.
This.

The right decision but massive respect for this guy. Held us together in 2016. Great leader, great player.

Deserves a massive send off. Too bad his last game isnt in melbs. Would get clapped for every disposal.

My favourite Goddard moment:

Peaked at the peak of the game. He was the AFLs best player for a moment of time.

"From the pen of Stan Leigh, from Movel Studios,
we brought you Deadpool, Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers,
we'd like to bring to you Waiting for Goddo".

well put, what a moment and what a crying shame they didn't grab that flag.

MUCH LOVE BJ - a massive essendon legend.
Sad they didn't win the flag, but good for us I guess - if they had've won, we most likely wouldn't have ever got BJ .

Thanks BJ for your great service.

This is the sad side of football but totally correct decision.

At the time it was a big time contract and was totally worth every dollar.

I am actually very sad that we couldn't give him one more year to try and get that Flag he came to us for yet he walked straight into the Saga. :(
Captained and was the voice out front during the worst of it, yet walks away with a B&F and other assorted Silverware.
Thanks BJ....you were fantastic for our Footy Club in good and very bad times. Wish you and your family all the best no matter what you do going forward.
Echo this
Bit disappointed we didnt give him one more if he wanted it
But we clearly have other plans with his spot/contract money

All the best BJ, and cheers for helping when we needed it

It's a very unsatisfying end to one of the better careers played in the post 2000 era.

Even though he's only played 120 games for us it's going to take most about 10 years to play as many good games as Goddard played in his time here.

I hope that he doesn't resent us too much because if he wants to coach we should want to be able to benefit from his intelligence and footy brain.

I'd actually like to see him play on. He's clearly got more to give it just cant be we with us. It would have been madness for us to be keeping Francis and Redman from a side in 2019, players like Goddard don't play VFL (it wasn't really right that Stanton ran out his career as a VFL player). There's a very good chance that Ridley joins Francis and Redman on the list. Gleeson will return too.

Generational change is always forced and virtually never organic result of young players forcing their way into a spot. It's just a matter of when it's forced by a club or a player's body.

BJ already has his next job lined up
