Player Watch #9: Trent Cotchin is an obscenely good 3 x Premiership Captain, Victorian Captain & Brownlow Medalist

It's just dawned on me that this is Cotch's last season. When you think of his list of achievements, he is a highly decorated player, yet I think he will be remembered most for changing his game and probably in doing so, the culture of the club.

Being unselfish, bringing everyone along for the ride and his uncompromising attack on the ball changed the RFC and helped turn the club into a juggernaut, feared and hated and perhaps in some quarters respected.

It's just not going to be the same without the No 9 and his hair lining up in the middle for the Tiges. Well done Trent - here's hoping you have a great year and go out with a bang. You deserve it!

Given his late season form last year he might well stay on as an impact mid for a while yet. We can't rely on him nowadays. But if he gets reduced load he could well stick around a win another few titles with us.

Up to him. But I reckon he's still got a bit left in him.

His evolution as a player became a precedent for the evolution of the team. Prioritising making those around you better, even if your individual performance drops

In Conrad's book it ironically all started with a coffee between Cotch & Jack at the end of 2016 where they accepted success was unlikely for them, so how do they set-up the next generation (Rioli & co) for success?

Not if we win the flag touch wood. He couldn't go again after that surely. Hasn't he already intimated this would most likely be it ?
will go around again for back to back

It’s well documented that Neville Crowe’s funeral was a significant point in his life mentally which further developed his empathy for others .

4 flags 300 games is a good time to call it a day. Sonsie is ready already so his development is slowed by cotch in the team.

What I love about all our leaders, our coach, was that it took them to be on the brink of utter personal failure, before they found the true path to success - moving past the ego and completely focusing on improving others.

Dimma looked beyond a game and coaching style that had brought him a modicum of success to start again, with a new game plan that relied on a positive culture and collective ownership. Pressure was a foundation but without buy-in and everyone sacrificing their own individual games to improve the team, it was never going to work.

Jack was a self-serving, egotistical, glory hunter. As long as you got out of his way so he could kick all the goals then he was happy and if the opposition had the ball, well, good luck to them - he was never going to chase and tackle them.

Cotchin was the same. He was about personal glory, getting cheap possessions around the back. His disposals were often meaningless and he was too easily tagged out of a game.

That was all completely turned on its head. Both Jack and Cotch became defensive monsters, tackling and tagging, tapping it on to others, breaking through packs to win or spill the ball. Most of it was unheralded, not earning a possession or being seen.

It is wonderfully ironic that Cotchin gave up all his personal glory to help others achieve success, only to earn more personal glory and team accolades that almost any other player has achieved through that unselfish decision.

I hope all our club and everyone in it, have learnt from our current leaders of what it takes to be successful so we can continue to be so for decades to come.

I had a feeling they were gonna hide cotchin up forward this year. 16 goals in 90 last games not a great return. Before any of the fanboys state the obvious that he's usually a mid, he did play a fair few stints up forward last few years also. (Dan Rioli kicked 10 last year from the backline also). I thought the forward lineup we have could be our greatest strength:
F: Bolton, Riewoldt, MRJ
HF: Martin, Lynch, Cumberland

Adding Cotchin with old man Riewoldt really exposes us as a retirement home up forward. I honestly believe with Taranto and Hopper we should be favourites with Brisbane for the flag. I'm already dreading Cotchin up forward as being a repeat of Chris Newmans and Edwards final year. We've also got to get games into Judson and Sonsie. This whole sick obsession with round numbers is fu@ked... OOH 300 games = sexy. YUK 294 games= ugly. In AFL you're a life member at 200 games invited to all the functions. 300 games no difference. 400 games just means the media will get a photo of you, KB, Tuck Snr, Harvey, Fletch and Burgoyne. Also they now add preseason games to your tally so technically Cotchin has played 300 games. I'll fu@ken spew if Cotchin makes us long for the return of Castagna. Lets be honest apart from the dyed in the wool circle jerkers everyone knows Cotchins not a forwards arse. I can only assume Cotchin hasn't had a growth spurt or is combing his hair like Kid n play, so Lynch and Riewoldt are safe. Bolton and Martin's turds are more talented than Cotchin. I assume MRJ's going nowhere since his pressure is next level. Which means Cumberland gets the unlubricated pineapple.

The Cotchin plan won't work, you do have to wonder how many games we will waste trying to get it to work. Just hope it doesn't cost us any wins or young players at seasons end. It is a concern IMO, love Cotch and everything he has done for us, but he should have told the club last year he was done even if the club were the ones who convinced him to go 1 more time.
