Player Watch #9: Trent Cotchin is an obscenely good 3 x Premiership Captain, Victorian Captain & Brownlow Medalist

They've been trying to get Cotch playing forward for years. He's not a great goal kicker, but is capable. So playing him forward is .. interesting. But as an impact mid who plays forward it sounds good.

I'm not 100% certain Cotchin forward is the best use/benefit for the team.

If I look at our potential forward setup (excluding Cotchin) it could look something like this:

Martin Riewoldt Bolton
Cumberland Lynch Rioli

So for mine he doesn't knock any of those out of the forward line, but he could be used as a bench rotation at times. The challenge with Cotchin is he's slow, so he's not burning anyone off on the lead or at ground level, he's an average shot for goal, he's not a long kick, he's not particularly big and strong so he's probably not taking contested marks. I'm a bit worried he might not have that much of an impact in the forward line. He's a leader and he has game smarts, but I'm not sure of his forward craft.

Wait and see, but I feel it's a bit of a shoehorn move to try and squeeze him to 300 games.

The Cotchin plan won't work, you do have to wonder how many games we will waste trying to get it to work. Just hope it doesn't cost us any wins or young players at seasons end. It is a concern IMO, love Cotch and everything he has done for us, but he should have told the club last year he was done even if the club were the ones who convinced him to go 1 more time.
had his best year for us compared to his last few years and was one of our best last year what are you on about

Yeah as a midfielder, he is playing forward now, he isnt a forward. If there is no spot for him in the midfield, then why is he playing on?
he will obviously rotate through the midfield too, most likely push up and play as a high half forward. he has played forward before, kicked 5 in a game before he will be fine. he has the smarts. dont knock it until its tried

I'd prefer Cotch in his current role + additional bench time. See where he plays in the practice matches.

Preseason practice games Cotch played fwd and kicked a few. Great if he can add goal kicking to the resume. I rate flags first. 300 game milestones second. I mean the way I see it is Cotch fwd Dusty or Shai mid more mid.

Tricky if Cotch & Jack drop form, I hope Dimma has had a conversation about form. Edwards did get dropped but it was late .
TT & JH IN should see us winning a lot, & by bigger margins.
So hopefully a victory lap for Cotch & Jack. Pick up flag No 4 in September

Can you imagine Cotchin terrorizing the Tom Stewart, Callum Mills of the world, those defensive HBs that setup oppo attack but also block ours. Who knows what his role is, he could be taking Lamberts role?, be used at stoppages in the forwardline, be the SUB all year? Whatever role he gets, they'll get him to 300+ gms.

Must admit I’m not completely sold on the idea of him playing forward, he will be great around stoppage and will probably be able to snag a few from smart crumbs and gut running but his set shot has never been fantastic and he really can lack penetration in his kicking these days so unless he’s within 25m of goals I don’t know if he can reliable enough to kick the distance

Although more than happy to be proven wrong

Make 25m 40m and I agree. He needs to be close to the goals.

Really looking forward to Cotch having some more help in the guts, and rotating forward. He makes some pretty clever passes, which counters his sometimes errant goal kicking from set, will bring some accountability defensively to our F50 which fell away somewhat since 2017.
Games ENUF Goals LOTS Clearances MANY Votes LOADS Wins PLENTY Flags ANOTHER Critics BITE ME

We will hold him to account on this!

Operation get the ball to Cotch Is in full swing!
Good on him for having a crack. We're playing port in Round 24.

I can just see it now. Cotchin kicks the sealer and his 25th for the season and hands Cornesy his jumper as he walks off the ground

Carried us in his first 10yrs.
Team can for 1.

That's a fanciful over-exaggeration. His first 2 seasons he had constant leg injuries and averaged 15 touches across 25 out of 44 games. His 3rd season he managed 17 games and averaged 18 touches. His 4th season is when he improved. Trent's been a very good player with a couple of great seasons. History will be overly generous when his career is assessed as a whole.
