Player Watch #9: Trent Cotchin is an obscenely good 3 x Premiership Captain, Victorian Captain & Brownlow Medalist

I love Cotch, definitely one of the top few captains this club has had.
Selfless in the way he has played for the betterment of the team and individuals around, a team first attitude.

So that being said he needs to make the decision to retire now so he isn’t keep a kid that needs to play out of the team.

There have been many players that deserve to get to 300, but haven’t quite got there. I don’t think it gives any more to his career. Retirement now would prove that he is a great of the game and it isn’t about him.

Play next week against WCE as a fair well to the supporters and hang up the boots Cotch, you’ve done you job.

He's done, but what a champ he was. Still rarely makes a bad decision, but just can't move defensively or get the pill like he use to. The fact that he has still been way better than Judson Clarke, HRS, Maurice or Sonsie the last 3 weeks is the real issue.
Truth be told he has never been great playing in an outside role .

He was pretty good playing that accumulator role 2013 to 2016 but it never resulted in team success. It's when he ditched his accumulation and went pure quality of quantity is when the tide turned for RFC. He was a best in 17 to 20 just bulldozing players and play that true "anti-social" on the egde brand.

Not that i put much credence into the Autopsy threads but here's Cotchin's evaluation thus far this season by the BIGFOOTY punters for being amongst the best players:
-1.1%
-8.9%
-30.4%
-1.3%
-0.6%
-10.4%
-0% This round thus far.
Bare in mind some smart ass has given Sonsie a vote today when he had 1 effective possession.
Considering we've been playing 7 or 8 kids most weeks not to mention bloody losing and practically on bottom of the ladder, even his fanboys are giving votes to the kids ahead of Cotchin how well do people truly think he's going?

Hopefully the fanboys go crazy and sell out all the 300 game merch cos I won't be getting any. I'd rather see him bow out and Dow/ Banks get games.

I don't think he is keeping any kids out that's the problem our depth is horrible.

Maybe Mansell or even Clarke who could play that high half forward role he is playing

If we are talking another mid rotation Dow probably deserves a look but was injured early in the season and just fining form again now

The issue is Cotchin plays the bash and crash role but when he has the footy in space or a ‘/mark free generally is a good thinker.
The club should have been playing blokes like Ross Sonsie Dow alongside him for the past 2-3 years so they learnt some of his traits or how he went about it .
Instead the club has bought in Taranto and hopper , moved Cotchin outside and kept blokes like Sonsie , Ross Dow outside .
It makes no sense the club had the perfect opportunity for Cotchin to leave a legacy on these young blokes instead he’ll be gone and we’ll have Taranto and hopper and then nothing around them , it makes no sense .

6 games to go. Perfect opportunity to play him as the sub to tick another game off. Realistically will beat WCE by minimum 5 goals. They literally can only do jogging at training as they only have 25-26 fit players. If we're relying on a kid coming on as sub with a 1/4 to go to win us the game we need to be relegated to the VFL.

Mansell is nothing special, Clarke is getting games.

Cumberland well deserved dropped, I don't think he is taking anyone's spot he just isn't playing what we expect of Cotch because of what he has done in the past but we already playing enough kids to build.

How great was it to see this legend kick some goals last night?
They just weren't ordinary goals . Everyone of those goals was a demonstration of the true natural ability of the man. Beautiful poise , awareness, balance, ball reading . out foxing his opponents and then the clean finish. I wrote this in the autopsy thread.

Special mentions to Trent Cotchin for making me feel 40years younger with three classical goals of the old days rover resting forward pocket style goals. It is something you rarely see nowadays of just pure natural talent and ball reading ability by someone 10m slower than their direct opponent , but using every bit of wisdom and talent in his bones to make them look 10m slower. Those three goals demonstrated how instinct, talent, natural gifts and every other football skill in Cotchin's weaponry made players look foolish. KB was the last Tiger for me to show these traits. We use the term once in a generation player, but Cotchin's better than that as he's a generation in one player. Meaning it doesn't matter if he was born in 1699 0r 3199 he'll be able to kill it in that generation.
Just when I thought this great man couldn't provide me with anymore memories he produced three in the one night and making me feel 40 years younger in his execution.

Few dickheads in here eating humble pie after last night.

What humble pie? He's played 1 good game up til round 9 out of 10 games in 2023 (8 regular + 2 preseason matches.) He still at best would've been out of our top 10 players on the weekend. He's kicked 4 goals for the year with only 1 prior to the weekend out of 9 games. I'd love for him to kick 3 every week but we all know it's not gonna happen. Let's not pretend it's not painful seeing defenders waltz right by him repeatedly each round cos he's easily the slowest small fwd in the entire comp.

Do you think this 3 goal effort is gonna be his new norm or is it gonna be another 9 weeks for an ok game out of him. Talk him up next game he plays putrid why don't you. Also that goal he set up to Graham wasn't because Graham was in a better position because they were both 45 out and Graham was on a far worse angle. It was because he had neither the accuracy nor the distance in him. By rights whistle could've been blown for no 15m.

You're a joke mate. Get a life. campaigners like you make me wish we didn't have any success.

It was good to see him kick a few. Let's not get carried away though, he's still at the stage where he's a cameo player now. Still probably needs to be managed a bit to 300.
