Jeez it's hard to hide an ageing, slowing champion in your side approaching 300 games...
Hopefully he has a few big games still in him

Might be a bridge to far considering our other injuries but would be nice to see him go 2012 level Cotch for Anzac eve or Dreamtime

The bloke decided to retire last season, whoever dangled the carrot in front of him should be let go, horrible call

A lot want him to get to game 300 for some weird ass reasons but he himself was Done & didn’t want it

Richmond, across its history, has enjoyed its greatest eras and successes while being ruthless.
Part of that meant tough decisions.
Sadly it's all about the optics now and 'feel good' stories.
Fluff and feel good doesn't win games or premierships.

His form early season or off the back of a break has never been great . The role they are trying to play him doesn’t suit him . He was arguably one of our most effective mids prior to the decision to rest him as sub last week .

Agree that they were all awful.

And they weren’t on their Pat Malone
Bakers kicking has gone to pot..,
Um. The game that you were watching was?

Yes, had some clangers, however if going better than 75%DE, with 35 total possessions and most metres gained for your team You are not the problem.

His hand balling efficiency bumped up his average

Should just be sub every game until 300

Yeah right Poindexter. Blind Freddie can see he butchers the ball. The game moves that fast sats aren't that accurate. Easier with basketball and 5 blokes to do stats. No one can question his heart, but his disposal will stop him being a champion. Oh and to run you pump your legs and swing your arms in synchronisation. Not hit the X button repeatedly.

COTCHIN NEEDS 300! JACK NEEDS 800! WHO'S ON FIRST? COTCHIN NEEDS 300!!!!!

This is the mental image I get of all the OCD nutjobs obsessed with Cotchin participating to 300. Had to backtrack about saying playing to the 300 cos besides MRJ and the mascots running through the banner he's basically stifling kids development. Cotchin and MRJ stay in and Sonsie out and no Bauer. Fu@k it think I'll go out instead and tape the game.
300 such a sexy, all-important, all-encompassing number.

This sums up if Cotch is cooked or not!!! Where are all those peanuts in this thread last year who kept banging on about "they're champions of the club they can play on as long as they like, another 3 years if they want". Play him another 8 games straight, make a poster/ tshirt whatever. Why drop him get it over and done with.

So much effort for such a poor post. 🤦‍♂️

And that ruthlessness condemned us to 37 years in the wilderness

Was bored, needed a break from completing an assignment so thought I'd scan the 1st page of your 30,000 :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek: LOL 30,000 comments. What bland Un insightful dogsh!t. Wish I had that minute back. BTW that post took a couple of minutes. Get a job and you might get some skills... Won't have time for your 6 billion comments goal in life though.

GR style ruthless? 4 flags 37 years of rubbish.
A big price. And the club don't operate that way now.
We keep Dusty attract players to the club. Let players leave respectfully.
The way player contracts go, club's can't just sack players.. good for the players as you are a long time retired

I rate flags above anything. I rate the 300 games highly too. There's a fine line between Cotchs on field contribution and the nebulous "culture" contribution of a player.

Cotch was tapering off in form last year but the club decided to give him another year.
I thought we'd be undefeated with Taranto in.
The club are resting Cotch and Jack.

Losses suck and everything should get scrutinized..

‘Fluff and field good’ absolutely doesn’t win games or premierships. Culture does. You can have all the talent on the park, but what gets you over the line is your in-built culture.

Part of culture - especially in todays sport (not limiting this to AFL) - is the way you treat your players. This is especially true of your greats. Take the recruitment of Taranto and Hopper; Lynch before them. They have all consistently pointed to the feel of the club and how the treat each other as a reason they selected the club in the first instance. I believe all three (and others) could have made more money elsewhere (as could the likes of Baker and Bolton from other clubs) but chose Richmond for the underlying culture.

What does your culture say about you if you toss one of your greatest club captains, leader and club champion aside ‘ruthlessly’? I seriously doubt the recruiting efforts or player retention successes we’ve had would be the same.

I think it’s also worth getting some facts straight in this discussion. Both Riewoldt and Cotchin were offered one year deals by the club for this season. It obviously wanted them back - for a variety of reasons - but one (and Riewoldt mentioned this on AFL360) the club mentioned is that its preference for staggering retirements. It’s the downside of trying to collate a list with a grouping of the same age in an attempt to win a premiership. Most will retire within a few seasons of each other (Hawthorn certainly, think we will see this from Geelong over the next two seasons). We had already lost Lambert, Houli and Edwards. Cotchin and Riewoldt this season. Grimes likely next. Then Lynch and Prestia would be close to calling time. As would Nankervis, Vlastuin, Pickett and KMac.

As it’s been reported, they were both offered new deals, told that there role this season was likely to be a transition one, and that the club would prefer if they stayed so they could manage retirements of experienced players (as well as list management as a whole after trading out of the 2022 draft) in a certain manner. It was up to Cotchin and Riewoldt if they wanted to come back and they obviously did.

We’ve already seen Cotchin being involved in the sub the last two games; and in both instances enabled a next generation player to play. It’s a bit of both worlds in that regard (managing Cotchin and playing youth). So I think - whilst not perfect - him getting in the way of a developing player is a bit overblown.

Lastly, I think his performance is in part a consequence of Taranto and Hopper. This may be somewhat obvious, but the flow on effect has been Cotchin trialed as half forward, and not so much in the midfield. This takes away from his strengths and a position he has played since day one of his AFL career. I think that if you look at the players underperforming to start this season, most are impacted by Taranto and Hopper coming into the club (Nank and Prestia with new midfield players and have to gel/ understand each other, Dusty, Cotchin and Bolton playing more forward and not necessarily to their strengths).

Not saying Cotchin would be back to his best if he was in the midfield, far from it. That Cotchin is long gone. But he may be more impactful if he was playing in a position more in-line with his strengths.

Ultimately, I’m a firm believe that what is best for the club overrides all. What is best for the club however is ensuring the culture is as best as it could possibly be. That means treating your veterans and club legends respectfully and dutifully which I think the club is doing.

8 games to go. If only 292 games was some sort of magical milestone instead of 300.....

Anyway if we keep playing him game 300 will be vs Freo away. Suppose 1 more rest and then game 300 can be our home game vs Stkilda in Round 15 in deep June.

Then he can retire and all the happy 300'ers here can be happy.

Milestones, achievements in football are interesting 100 games for father son?
I don't rate Brownlows, All Australian.
Games played for a club is the one I do rate.. along with flags
The club contact Cotch for this season. 300 gamers at punt road is a rare club.
4 flags to go with it would have been preferable. But with Grimes, Dusty not what he was, Nank and Lynch getting injured.
Young players are inconsistent Cotch being used as sub is fine.
Sonsie was great last year, haven't seen any games this year but not amazing last game. Ross and Dow probably losing opportunity with Cotch there.
Ross leaving would be a loss

Ross has had many opportunities and probably hasn't really used them as well as he or we would've liked. Just a good ordinary footballer, handy for some depth when we're going really well, but not going to be a key player in a flag.

I think he's good enough to play regular AFL. Our problem at the moment is we lack absolute A graders. In our premierhip years we had Cotchin, Martin, Rance Reiwoldt all in their prime then a second tier of Edwards, Houli, Vlaustin, Grimes, Astbury etc. Our A graders are aging or retired now and past their prime. Of the current squad only maybe Bolton and Lynch you would class as elite.
