Malcom Blight is SA football royalty. The boy who grew up following Port Adelaide would go on to become a Brownlow & Magarey medal winner, plus win 2 Premierships with the Kangaroos. In his final playing year (35 yo), he kicked a lazy 126 goals for Woodville West Torrens before hanging up the boots.
But Blighty wasn’t just a great footy player, he also turned out to be a pretty handy coach as well. With his no nonsense, fearless attacking mindset he would lead Geelong to 3 Grand Finals & 1 PF within a 6 year window, without ever tasting ultimate success.
After sitting out 2 seasons, Blighty takes up the offer to coach the fledgling Crows who call time on Robert Shaw’s unsuccessful tenure. It’s here that he cements himself as a true legend of the game. With his seat barely warm, Blighty catches an entire football mad state off guard by announcing the immediate delistings of four favourite sons, Mcdermott, McGuiness, Andrew Jarman, & Greg Anderson. The culling is ruthless & completely unexpected, but it has a desired effect. With there attractive, hard running style, the Crows would go on to win the next 2 Premierships.
Malcom Blight, the man who once famously called out David Pittman’s rucking performance as the ‘worst he’s ever seen’, had done it all, in his own unique way.
This year marks the 20th anniversary since we last tasted success. In that period, the failures have been many, & the culture has been tarnished beyond recognition. If the club ever needed a Malcom Blight, it is now. In fact, it’s probably the only thing that will save us from another 20 years of wandering around in the AFL wilderness.

is not the answer, we need a fresh voice, with new ideas, a new approach, & a fearless persona that’s not afraid to ruffle some feathers & stir the hornets nest. What we need is a Malcom Blight.
