From time to time the question of a new flag is raised .
Those against a new flag state the obvious attachment to the current flag
and often site those who have fought under the flag .

Those for a new flag state that the current flag is not unique in having the blue ensign , Union Jack and Southern Cross and being virtually indestinguishable from NZ's flag.

Historically people have fought under the current flag . I say that they fought for what the flag stands for not the flag itself .I believe those people deserve a new flag .Also Australia deserves a new flag to promote itself like Canada has done .

The accepted colours of Australia have changed from the tradional blue and gold , to green and gold and now the blue, green and gold tri-colour .
As such I have developed a very simple flag - simplicity being the strongpoint of any design - it being the yellow sun on a blue sky and green land as in my avatar .

Feedback ?
.

This is the only flag that will ever fly above my house.

Is there meant to be an image in your post? I can see your avatar, but you might want to put a big version up.

Anyway, not a fan, sorry. If we were to get a new flag, I'd want it to be recognisable as a development of the old one. I was playing around with a few designs last time this issue came up, and ended up with this (excuse the very quick and shoddy Paint job):

The boomerang part might be a little on the tacky side, but something along those lines would be ideal, I reckon.

Keep the Southern Cross, go to Green and Gold colours, and go the arms in the top left, or Aboriginal flag, or something fitting.

The Southern Cross is unique to the whole Southern hemisphere .
It appears on many flags .

This is the aboriginal flag , with Australia's colours .

Firstly, the Aussie green and gold does not have blue in it.

Secondly, green and gold is tacky as all ****.

Thirdly, bastardising the Aboriginal flag doesn't appeal to me much.

Kudos for trying to think outside the square, but you've missed the mark by a fairly long way.

well there you go, i always thought the black in the aboriginal flag represented the night sky.

i would like to get that union jack off our flag for sure. i'd also like to become completely dettached from the UK as well.

This is an interesting question: in my opinion the Union Jack has no place on our flag. Don't get me started on having a queen. But it's e that gets bogged down in what we should have instead. The vision gets bogged down in the detail.

But the surest way to kill this debate is to open it up, like they do in the Murdoch press, as a design competition. Because you invariably get the most ghastly designs brimming with shallow symbolism and accompanied by a rationale of what each element means. Much like when Howard used the republic convention to steer the debate.

Aesthetically, I like our current flag. But I want a new one. And like a few have posted in the thread, a jump to a design that featured the southern cross in some configuration would do me just fine.

Lets get starts and Union Jacks off any potential new flag. It looks like a bad home drawn christmas card.

How about something simple and awesome, like the Canadian flag.

Canada, went from something like this:

To this:

Interestingly the maple leaf had been used for centuries, they didn't try to go and devise something 'significant'.

Firstly, the Aussie green and gold does not have blue in it.

Green and gold only officially overcame blue and gold in 1984 .

Secondly, green and gold is tacky as all .

Yes , we stole those colours from South Africa .

I'm suggesting blue, green and gold tricolour which is now being unofficially adopted by more and more national teams .

Thirdly, bastardising the Aboriginal flag doesn't appeal to me much.

Firstly I'm not bastardizing the aboriginal flag .It's a beautiful flag and we could do worse than adopt that flag .It doesn't carry the countries just like the present flag doesn't carry Australia's colours .

The aboriginal flag represents black people over a red land and the sun .

I would if I could .

Yes , a lot of people think that way .I don't .

Yes , what about something truly Australian that is common to all cultures - a Sherrin .

Your flag :
Blue with the Southern Cross - not unique , doesn't carry Australia's colours .
Boomerang - tacky - introduces 3 new colours .
Large star - historical link but far from unique .
