That's why any new flag should have either the southern cross (even though it's also on the flags of Brazil, New Zealand & Samoa), or a Kangaroo on it (I've seen some good ones done on the Ausflag website, if anyone's interested).

A very good post and I agree except for the above .
The Southern Cross is common to the Southern hemisphere .
A kangaroo would be very distinguished .

Personally, I would only change the flag if there was something better to replace it, and most of the designs I've seen are either rip offs of the Aboriginal Flag, or a dog's breakfast combining of our current flag's colours & the Aboriginal Flag, so unless something better comes along, keep it as it is.

I agree . So let's try and find something uniquely Australian .

The Southern Cross has a place in history but it's clouded by polution now.
Undoubedly the sun has, is and will be the focus of Australia .
Yes the sun is not unique to us but it is a large part of being Australian .
We are an island - that is a feature that can be used .
We have unique wildlife - undoubedly a green and gold "Qantas" style kangaroo would be popular .
The boomerang is simple & unique and would recognise aboriginal occupation(but ignore the occupants preceding)
Or we can simply have Australin Football goalposts - simple & uniquely Australian but played by all cultures .

.

Unfortunately, the aboriginal flag is a private commercial design - it has been pushed by the media, but it has no official status. If you want to use it, you pay.

I believe that author is happy to relinguish control to the public .

Visiting the Austflag site I see most people can't get past the Southern Cross on Blue and the aboriginal colours .Not much choice really, not even the obvious like a Eureka Stockade flag ,Qantas kangaroo or much green and gold .

We should just follow the path of Libya and choose a colour.

At great expense here are my efforts

Simple, yet effective

Let's look at what they Canadians did.
They removed the Union jack and left the red flag .
They took an element of the existing flag and expanded that .
To make the red leaf work they put it against a white background .

Looking at it a different way - they put a maple leaf in a Peruvian flag .
How much more distinctive if it was a simple while flag with red maple leaf .

Unfortunately if we follow the same sort of processes we're left with a blue flag with with stars - a very common scenario .Our distinguishing feature -the Federation star is an extremely common symbol on flags .

A green and gold kangaroo would need a little more work.

.

Ummmm yeah right ..... you might want to compare your 1st suggestion with the Aboriginal flag.

There is one common element - the sun .
The current Australian is very hard to distinguish from a NZ flag and a host of our flags .

A huge proportion of flags share some or a lot of commonality .
The "distinctive" Canadian flag is actually like a Peruvian flag with a maple leaf.

.

Doesn't that Eureka flag have some nationalistic racist overtones associated with it now days? Wouldn't think that people would agree upon for the national flag.

Yeah sadly it does have that stigma, hence I said it could be a controversial move. Wish it wasnt though, it would have been a perfect replacement, has it has history on it's side.

But, I like the Australian Federation Flag that i posted though, similar in design, simple and quite effective.

And lastly, to simply have the Union Jack replaced with the Aboriginal Flag, on the Blue Ensign would look ghastly, and would be far more exclusionary than having the Union Jack on the canton (top left hand corner, which is a spot of high regard on a flag), because Indigenous people only amount to 2-3% of Australia's population.
Dr Weir disagrees...

Quite happy with the flag as it is, but if we had to change it I would go back to the red Australia flag or the RAAF flag:

Would refuse to accept anything with connotations to the Aboriginal flag, which rules out 99% of the stuff on the Ausflag website which is full of horrid designs.

Other then that the only change I would endorse was a flag featuring a Kangaroo, this design is quite good:
