Seriously fantastic. McCartney is just talking straight and is doing what is in the clubs best interests, building towards sustainable, long term success. This makes me far more willing to support the club than if he said we were going to contend next year and started trading for recycled hacks.

I would suspect the club would have a Key Performance Indicator that the club gets back in the top 8 prior to the end of 2015

If that has not happened I doubt McCarthy would proceed with the club beyond that point.

If he gets the club in the finals in 2013 or 2014 he should be awarded an extension.

Therefore, 5 years is 3 years from now, 2015 with the window opening from the year after that

The problem is our club doesn't have 6 years, our membership will already hit rock bottom next year after this years effort. Another 1 to 2 years like this year and we are in the shit, we need to have it together by the next TV rights

This is really the first proper bottoming out/rebuild we've had in a long time.

In the Rhode years he had way more to work with than Mcartney currently does. Furthermore when Eade took over we were in a reasonable position to start challenging again after picking up some good kids to compliment the ageing champs and the draft of 99 was ready to fire.

Reality is we have a bunch of kids and a few older players that aren't champions hanging on by a thread at the moment with nothing in between.

It will be lean times for a few years but I think Mcartneys doing the right thing and is a good choice of coach for the kids development.

BMac mentioned that the clubs that compete in GF's usually have players that have been in the system for 6 years and played 100 games (i think that was the amount). This is when they are at their best .... along those lines.

I hate to say this, but this could be the end of the Dogs. A six year plan, seriously???! Last coach that mentioned such a long plan was Terry Wallet and look what happened to him! Oh well, the Tigers have been waiting 30 years so if he can snare a flag in 6 years then mission accomplished for Macarthur.

It's a bit hard to have a 6 year plan when there's a chance we'll cease to exist in 4.....

You have to remember, we have some solid older players. And we have some good young kids. But we have a huge gap in middle aged players. Clayton was the worst recruiter. Blew so many first round picks, and not a single player left from the 2006 draft I believe? We will be competitive again when Griffen etc are veterans, but because the core of our list will still be Mid 20's, we can challenge for a few years if we draft the right players over the next few drafts, and beyond the 5 - 6 year period.
