And your club chose not to appeal it. No way he doesn’t get off on appeal.
He will get off.
Only appeal can be to get intentional down graded.
Fyfe tried this last year and was told a raised elbow / forearm is always considered as intentional.
This afternoon we are being told that a raised elbow / forearm is considered in "most cases" to be considered intentional.

Ablett must serve his penalty if the AFL is to maintain any semblance of integrity.

If you elect to bump and get the head you cop the penalty. If Steven May gets a week for his block in the preseason Ablett has to get a week. If Dylan Moore and Fyfe get a week (shown on 360 tonight) Ablett has to get a week. At least in those cases the ball was there, Abletts hit was late (Shiel had disposed of the ball) he jumped into the player AND raised his elbow hitting him in the head. Got to be a week.

....

Since its a bit late for that, I say he shoulda got off. ;)

We are going to be in trouble next week. Ablett is the only one in our team that can kick the bloody ball I50 to an actual team-mate. As opposed to an opponent, to no-one, or out of bounds on the full.

You're on top of the ladder. Playing North.

I think you'll be right

Surely there’s a difference between collecting someone with a bent elbow and a glancing blow of a straight arm

An elbow is only meaningfully dangerous is it’s cocked

He had both hands out in a pushing motion - there was no attempt to strike

Bugger me dead - it’s a dead set race to suspend blokes

He jumped in the air, no attempt to tackle, hit him with a raised forearm/elbow.

If Shiel had been concussed he'd have got four weeks. He's lucky with his week.

Ablett jumped in the air because Shiel disposed of the ball over the top of him. It was a delayed instinctive reaction. He couldn't tackle him because by the time contact occurred, Ablett was aware that Shiel had disposed of the ball.
Again, had Shiel disposed of the ball in a different direction, Ablett would not have jumped and contact would not have happened.

If my mum had balls she would be my dad.
It didn’t happen, why? coz it wasn’t forceful enough to hurt him, matter of fact Shiel kept playing a blinder.

It’s in line with the Cousins suspension last week. As Michael Christian last week:

“the guidelines reference the fact that a raised forearm is usually consistent that the strike is intentional, so it was graded on that basis.”
In the same week as he lets Hipwood off with doing the same thing
