Re: Ablett vs Ablett

Can anyone confirm whether the 'goal' at 2:06 of the Ablett video (against Melb) was actually a goal? I'd love to believe it was but have it on good authority that is wasn't. (And would explain why i havent seen it before). Cheers.
It wasn't a goal but the great man kicked 8 that night I think. It was Ronnie Burns' debut match and we won the half time Mitre 10 banner competition!
"10/10 for our heavenly men, Ablett, Buddha and Lord!"

Re: Ablett vs Ablett

Thanks SJ, Whispers... wouldnt know which round/year it was?

Gee, wouldnt it have been awesome if he'd kicked it, would be one of the all time great goals. :thumbsu:
Friday night, Round 1, 1996. Incredible to think that Ablett was still ripping teams apart and was able to move like that when he was 34!

Indeed it is. Liked the linked videos off the link provided by your good self. It's just fun knowing that when we go to the footy, we will be treated by some of the best skills in the business from the greatest name to ever play the game.

Well put. :thumbsu:

I liked it when Matthews said:
I find myself doing a mental ‘don’t be stupid, it can’t be possible’ internal rebuke.

Re: Ablett vs. Ablett by Leigh Matthews

It's a credit to Jr that he is even being placed in the same realm as his father. Still a long road to travel until we can truly place him alongside Sr, but the parallels are becoming more obvious the more we see of him. It's remarkable that we've been lucky enough to have their services, and we should certainly be thankful.

Re: Ablett vs. Ablett by Leigh Matthews

I see Matthews has said that they are physically different is this true? or does it just look this way because of the trend of drafting taller players now?

From memory Ablett snr was 185cm and id say 90+ kilos
and Ablett jnr is around 183cm and 87-90 kilos.
I think they look pretty similar as well both the hunched shoulders powerful builds and lacking a bit of hair.

Ablett jnrs contested marking looks very good this year, Ive noticed when hes on the lead and the kick isnt perfect so he is sitting under it a bit, he leaps early pushes his butt back into the player and takes the ball at full extension, with the little "butt push" it takes a couple of inches off the opposition players reach.

I think in the late 80's he was around 90kg and towards the end of his career he peaked at around the 95-96kg mark. At barely 6ft tall, I reckon it is amazing that he was able to end up playing a key forward position against sometimes taller opponents such as Langford, Silvagni, Martyn, Pert, etc. Mind you, with his superb athleticism and upper body strength he could out jump and wrestle these opponents.

Re: Ablett vs. Ablett by Leigh Matthews

You can't tell me that jnr is only 2 cms smaller than senior. I have seen them up close at different points and the difference has to be more than that

Do you think that Snr is taller than 185 or Jnr shorter than 183?

Edit: I've just checked and Gary Jnr is actually listed at 182. So, do you still think that 3 cm is not the correct difference?

And from memory Ablett Senior was 184?

Ablett v Ablett-Who is the greatest?

Malcolm Blight stated that he believed that Gary Ablett jnr was a better player than Gary Ablett snr.

"The H-S then asked who do you think is better-Gary Ablett snr or Gary Ablett jnr?"

I think the Geelong team in the 80-90's would have suffered more from Gary snr absence than the current Geelong team seem to without Gary jnr.

However, Gary snr would be handy for us today, as he can play up forward, where we are deficient, and then we could move the useless twins of Mooney and Hawkins out of the forward line.

I am interested in who other Geelong supporters think is better of the two.

Re: Ablett v Ablett-Who is the greatest?

Based purely on talent and freakish ability Senior wins hands down for me. I've watched both live; Jnr does what everyone else does, just at an elevated and ultra-consistent level. I think Judd at his best is every bit as good as Jnr, probably better.

The caveat to my ultimate answer is that (seemingly more so) these days, greatness is measured in terms of success as much as ability and individual dominance. By that measure, Jnr deserves thought. Here in the States much is being made of the LeBron/Dirk legacies if they dont get the ring this year. Guys like Gary Snr, Plugger, Robert Harvey were all champions but never got it done when it counted. Gaz has done it twice. I think (and pray) his short-sighted move will cost him more flags, but regardless, the resume always looks a lot nicer with championships attached.

Snr just did things nobody could do, and most would not even know how to attempt. I was at the game in '93 when he kicked 14. When he was on, it wasn't just a game. It was theater. For that reason I go with him.
