Re: Will He Go?: Gary Ablett had weekend talks with Gold Coast

No but i'm sure a lot of Richmond supporters did!

For starters, I don't think he will go.

What about all the kids who look up to Ablett and wear number 29 on their backs to every game. I know if I was playing in a team with a guy chasing money, when everyone else is staying for success, I wouldn't be happy.

This group has the chance to be one of/if not the greatest ever teams and he has the chance to possibly captain them, that should count for something.

Re: Will He Go?: Gary Ablett had weekend talks with Gold Coast

I just want him to stay! :(

He wouldn't be any lesser of a person for chasing the money...who wouldn't....come on would you!? Really.......

Nah he doesn't really owe us...but I will clutch at any straw....I can't see him staying....but I hope he does....

Re: Will He Go?: Gary Ablett had weekend talks with Gold Coast

how long is nathan even guaranteed to play for GC anyway...

If one of the big reasons gary goes (apart from the green) is to play with Nathan i would find it quite amusing if nathan packed up after a year because hes sick of the work rate, pre season and all that stuff again..

Just because he watched the cats win a flag and now "has the motivation back" doesnt mean that will last any longer than a a year before he goes walkabout back to being a local footballer/trady..

Re: Will He Go?: Gary Ablett had weekend talks with Gold Coast

Word out of Geelong is (and I am not naming sources):
1. Joel likely to stay and has suggested so - loves Geelong and doesn't care about the money

Dear Lord, my man-crush for Joel just got bigger (didn't think that was possible)!

Re: Will He Go?: Gary Ablett had weekend talks with Gold Coast

I wouldn't be so concerned about it if the GC were bound by the same rules that currently oversee the trading of a contracted player. Acquiring two top-5 picks or something similar would temper the disappointment and subsequent pain of seeing one of our greats in another guernsey. Getting sweet FA would just add salt to a deep wound.

Plus, I'd much prefer looking back on his career, which may be considered among the top 10 or 20 of all time, and know that he was Geelong all the way.

To answer the OP, I reckon he'll go.

Re: Will He Go?: Gary Ablett had weekend talks with Gold Coast

He can do what he likes, i think he's done enough to keep us happy for a long time. We have done well to keep them all together for this long and we have one more shot with everyone there. I dont think we have much to complain about if he decides to go. Just hope we dont lose too many at once.

He's a professional footballer and an individual. Last time I checked this was a free country and he can do what he chooses.
Personally I think if he did go, I think it would be more about a new challenge, rather than just the money. If we were lucky enough to win a flag next year, it would become increasingly difficult to motivate yourself through another year.

Re: Will He Go?: Gary Ablett had weekend talks with Gold Coast

Just as a query, are GC allowed to conduct discussions with contracted players at this stage?
Surely if they can chase players that are contracted it would cause massive issues during discussions with player X, like what is the club doing in the future, how do you fit into their plans etc?

If that is the case, & we lose Gaz to GC. What would stop us from contacting other players at other clubs to replace Gaz.

I.e. using the GC way, we contact someone like Judd, Sewell, Pendlebury with the line of: Gaz looks like leaving, would you like to join a true preimership contender?

Re: Will He Go?: Gary Ablett had weekend talks with Gold Coast

I think he'll go. I think the bigger concern is 2010 and how the team will gel around him if he's going.

It will become obvious and it will become a distraction. The club did become bigger than any individual and thats how we've achieved success, when someone is outside of that I'm not sure how the other blokes that bleed blue and white will react.

Fingers crossed we can hit the season running and grab another premiership, either way the kid is a champ and the GFC developed him to be such, the players he's with now pushed him to be the best, but he owes them nothing and gone are the days that we could expect loyalty to hold onto everyone.

That being said, there are a stack of players on that list that are there for the club and it's success more than money so who knows what happens in January when he's surrounded by those boys again.

Re: Will He Go?: Gary Ablett had weekend talks with Gold Coast

I have a feeling Gaz will go, and while I'd be shattered, I wouldn't hold it against him forever like I did with Colbert.

Do you know why colbert left ?

Re: Will He Go?: Gary Ablett had weekend talks with Gold Coast

He was a soft **** & couldn't handle the more senior players.
They didn't agree with him being nominated as Capt. , so he made the excuse he was looking to win a flag & went to North.

all in all Colbert actually handed Geelong more success than he did North when he went.

Re: Will He Go?: Gary Ablett had weekend talks with Gold Coast

This'll be the main topic of discussion for the next year or so, so it probably warrants a sticky......

I'd be getting in touch with that spooky lady with the cards and crystal ball that Maxy knows.....'cause all I can honestly see happening over the next few years is Gazza going to the Gold Coast, and Joel to the new Sydney team (with Tom Harley as coach!). The competition actually needs this to happen if the game is to flourish as a national comp.

Both will be captains. Both wil be earning a bucket-load. Both will be seeking out fresh endeavours. While we, as Cats supporters, may find in hard to swallow, I can't help but be excited as well for the two men, as they install the Geelong way of play, sacrifice and art into the new environments. Imagine the two of them lining up against each other at the coin toss, in the first game between the new clubs. It's what the future of the AFL is all about. With the Cats still unstoppable, naturally.

Re: Will He Go?: Gary Ablett had weekend talks with Gold Coast

Thing I don't get is that he is contracted to Geelong for 2010 and I didn't think anyone was allowed to directly contact contracted players....this is obviously not the case. But then we almost have the situation where a player is playing for one club and intends on moving to another the next season like they do in NRL. I don't like that scenario at all.

As a pro footballer he is entitled to seek the best deal...no issue..but it's bad look on the eve of a new season.

If I hear about a Bulldog player meeting with them during this preseason or while the season is going on i'll not be happy. They can and should do that at the end of next season! At this stage it should all be dealt with by the managers behind doors.

I don't like this one bit! AFL needs to stop this NOW!

Re: Will He Go?: Gary Ablett had weekend talks with Gold Coast

Care to enlighten us?

There are unsubstantiated reports that some of the senior players at the time weren't happy with such a young captain being appointed. Does that mean he should give up and walk out on the club, never giving a true explanation to the fans and members?

From a 2004 Herald Sun article:
One of the reasons floated as to why you were leaving was that some of the senior players were not fully supportive of the decision to make you captain.

Look, one day I will go right into it but it's not something that I want to rehash while I'm still playing. It's like anything, all footballers have ambitions and there were five or six who were in contention for the job at the time, and I can understand that some of them were disappointed. In hindsight I probably wouldn't have done it. I wouldn't do it again.

The AFL will turn a blind eye (or actively encourage) anything that the GC do, they want the $$$.

Anyway, the thought of this stuff makes me feel sick. What sort of competition allows a team to come in and take a free whack at the best player in the competition while giving minimal compensation to that players team? Gross.

Re: Will He Go?: Gary Ablett had weekend talks with Gold Coast

Two main fears

* We lose GAJ end of next year to GC & we lose Selwood to WS the year after
* The speculation of will he/won't he next year seriously detracts from our onfield efforts, possibly costing us a premiership

I'll be upset if he goes, but can understand why he would go, especially as regardless of who stays and goes, 2011 is likely to see us well truly back in the pack.

Zero chance of losing both IMHO. I think we're much more likely to keep both than lose both. If we lose one of them (god forbid) the other will be able to receive a massive payrise to stay.

Re: Will He Go?: Gary Ablett had weekend talks with Gold Coast

Whatever.... if he goes, he's a dick and I hope he does his knee. Like he doesn't have enough money already.

Come on, if you were offered an $800,000 salary increase to change jobs, you wouldn't take it?

Re: Will He Go?: Gary Ablett had weekend talks with Gold Coast

i think he will stay

i also think its incorrect to say that he doesnt owe the club anything.

when he came to the club under the f/s rule, he was not a top rated player. He was a second round pick, late first at best.

The club (management, coaches, staff and volunteers) have all put in effort to see him become the player he is today.

That must be worth something.

Re: Will He Go?: Gary Ablett had weekend talks with Gold Coast

The one thing about this meeting is that is likely to put a rocket under Geelong get moving on contract negs.

The compensation package better be two top 5 picks and one of those 17yo's if he goes but i think there is a quirk in the rules that govern these uncontracted players.

Geelong is better to trade them one their players under contract and pour the money into Ablett and Selwood.

Steve Johnson would be my pick.

I think it is one first round pick just prior to our existing first round pick in any draft in the next 3 years - have to say we are going to use it BEFORE the season starts
