According to Champion Data Fyfe could be ineligible winner of Brownlow Medal

Picture this hypothetical (and slightly unlikely) scenario:
Fyfe 27 Votes
Buddy Franklin 24 votes

Fyfe can't win because of accidental head clash
Franklin can win because shoulder to head was deemed insufficient force !

The MRP is a joke (as we all know).

I wish they would look at each action individually, rather than decide the outcome based on the damage done. Ablett and Franklin only got off because there was no damage done - and in Abletts case the dogs player let the MRP know he was okay - but because Rischitelli (I think it was?) was bleeding, the MRP dished out a suspension

It shouldnt be called the Brownlow anyway. Its a VFL award.Who cares who won it in 1953 or 1923 if you're not from Victoria.
Same goes for the goal kicking award. Should have been a new award from day one of the AFL

Brownlow = Gary Ablett Jr Award
Coleman = Gary Ablett Sr Award

Tom Rockliff was another smokey who would have polled reasonably well (although not too many wins for Brisbane) who has now become ineligible due to the MRP today.

Agreed. Brownlow and Coleman is a VFL award and was carried on as the Vics control the AFL. One way of moving towards a national comp is calling both awards something else and moving the others to the VFL.

Would rather see Fyfe storm home and win the coaches association award, now Ablet tis injured that is a genuine chance, he might even be in front after this round. A lot more respect should be given to that award than the Brownlow which is voted by 3 blokes that every AFL fan wants to murder each week.

Especially when at least 1/3 of the guys each week hates us. I'm looking forward to Brownlow night and hearing 3 votes (someone from the bulldogs) for our game with them.

If Fyfe wins, isn't illegible, and Buddy gets it instead, I may end up topping myself.

If the AFL had any integrity (I know it's an oxymoron), then they would rule PRIOR to the Brownlow night that only MRP findings of 'intentional' would make a player ineligible.

So true IP, being rubbed out for incidental/accidental contact has absolutely nothing to do with being "fair".

I would have said the coaches award holds the most prestige these days until I saw how many votes Priddis has so far.
Yeah, I don't think there's a decent voting system around. That year Marc Murphy won the AFLCA award was a bit WTF. Good player but best player across the season?

All have their flaws. AFLPA MVP is a joke though - just a popularity contest.

Maybe something that could combine the opinions of the players/coaches/media/fans would be a reasonable system but logistically it seems a bit of a pain. Also I imagine there'd be numerous issues with sponsorship if we simply amalgamated all the various voting awards.

B&F and the BF Freo POTY is still where it's at ;)

Now that would look ugly for them... I wonder if they have considered that scenario or if they just have all their bits crossed that Gaz is far enough in front for it not to matter (never mind the 'misdemeanour' he got let off for), or that someone else, like Pendlebury wins it, to avoid the shit storm altogether.

It's how many of the better pro sports awards are done IMHO. NBA do a 'mixed version' involving fans, official media and coaches too (I think, might be fans and media only). The FIFA POTY I don't think involves fans, but does have a mix of coaches, players and official representatives. Most US awards tend to favour selected (but still very broad selection) of media representatives.

AFAIK, the Brownlow is the only significant pro-sport individual award that is entirely decided by on-field officials. It's flawed from that point fwd IMHO, the 3-1 voting makes it even worse.

I'm pretty convinced that the only thing keeping the Brownlow relevant is the media hype, the eye candy and the free booze. Everybody who knows the slightest about footy knows it's a massively flawed award.

The best of an average bunch is the AFLCA ... as you say, our POTY is pretty good too. :D

So the coaches award is not credible because you happen to disagree how the coaches rate one player? You have a better insight into a players' worth than the coaches?
To me the coaches award hands-down gets the chocolates.
I agree with the consensus that AFLPA award is a popularity contest. Incorporating supporters votes into an award would be even more of a popularity contest though...imagine all the people who would vote based on what they read or hear someone else say, without actually watching footy closely and forming an opinion themselves.
The Brownlow is the umpires award, it is what it is. People can give as little or as much credibililty to it as they like. I agree it is probably voted on by some people who appear to lack a fundamental understanding of the game, however what's the point in taking the award away from umpires votes and using, for example, media votes. Then it wouldn't be the brownlow, it'd just be another "insert radio/tv station footballer of the year award". There are already plenty of these.
