BOO WHAT A FLOG

Hodge goes drink driving after one of his coaches' son dies in an alcohol fueled bender -
Aww let him off he's a good bloke

If anyone who is clearly affected by booing asks for it to stop, then there shouldn't be a person in the world who thinks that it is right to boo them further, no matter what race they are. Of course, seeing how idiot AFL club supporters have reacted to the whole Goodes incident, you would expect that they would continue to be booed. I wholeheartedly disagree with that, although I expect you don't.

Two questions relating to the highlighted.

Are you contending that players get booed purely on a racial basis?

What was the Goodes incident?

Caro is always wrong...will probably end up wrong on this call.

Most people here doing a fantastic job of justifying the article. Simply focusing on the football community (because I refuse to get into a debate in regards to racism in Australia), the very fact some people can treat Goodes as a player with such contempt boogles my mind. He was and is (proved it last week) an extremely talented footballer, you don't just win two Brownlows playing two different roles. The hypocrisy of the average person here is baffling, Goodes has literally done nothing but positive work for his own community and the broader Australian community and been an exceptional footballer to boot, yet I think the majority here feel he is more of a flog than Kerr or Cousins. Simply because he ruffles feathers on an issue that most Australians don't want to address.

I agree wholeheartedly that the fact people seemed to be more upset when someone like Cousins hung up the boots than Goodes is an incredibly sad reflection of the football community.

It's his own fault no one respects him anymore.

It's not racism, everyone loves Eddie Betts.

Betts doesn't make racist white people uncomfortable. Goodes has done nothing but good and deserves a proper send off as a legend of our game.

100% agree with Caro. Goodes is an absolute ornament to the game. Whether you look at number of games, individual success, team success, team loyalty, leadership, mentorship of younger players, consistency, versatility etc etc., he is an absolute freak of the game., and has been for well over a decade now.

And that's just on the field. His work in furthering Indigenous recognition and reconciliation, and of inspiring young people of all colours is remarkable. He is once in a generation on this front.

Yup. Can you imagine if Hodge gets booed next week - the channel 7 commentators and the wider "footballing world" would be up in arms. But booing Goodes is freedom of expression.

so not only is goodes written off for next year, but Sydney's chances of making a preliminary at least?

Sydney may really need another year from him, and why not, Franklin will be the same age when is contract finishes

What a juvenile response. Australians really don't like being called out on racism.

That's because most of the people who call out others on racism are sanctimonious morons who shut down any dialogue by stating that once they have made their decision on what something is it then becomes a fact.

That's what a great many Australian's take issue with.

Goodes hasn't even announced his retirement and as far as I knew there is still a chance he might play on next year so how do you send off a player in the manner he deserves when you don't know if he's going. Of course, it is possible that Goodes has made the decision to retire but has refrained from announcing it for fear of what the reaction may be which would be a shame.

If only some in the football media had subscribed to this theory referred to in the article :

But Sydney told the AFL that Goodes felt uncomfortable about any such gesture and also believed that to address the booing would only worsen or draw attention to the situation.

I am firmly of the belief that some of the booing is a reaction to the pious attitudes of the media and had they not made an issue of it, we wouldn't be talking about it now.

That said, it is now widely known that the booing is viewed as racist by Goodes and as such anyone with a functioning brain should have the common sense not to do it. I genuinely hope that should Sydney win tonight that the Subiaco crowd don't boo Goodes next week - it's not a good look and I'd rather not be regarded as a racist bigot due to the actions of simpletons. It's a forlorn hope, but nonetheless with any luck he's applauded off the ground regardless of the result just in case it is his last appearance at Subiaco

Actually, it is. Just because he is forthright with his pride for his ancestry doesn't mean, in any way, that he deserves to be booed for his actions. It is an absolute shame that white Australia in general cannot deal with any open display of pride for their race.

My argument to that is, how many indigenous footballers aren't proud of their heritages? Many indigenous footballers are forthright in their pride for their heritage, how many get booed?
Michael Long was always a strong advocate for indigenous matters, never got booed for it. Which considering he was a pioneer in bringing racial issues in footy to front of mind is amazing based on the current views on the booing.
We have indigenous round, indigenous jumpers are popular on sale, we have more indigenous players ever in the game, yet only one gets booed.

Is it purely a race thing as people suggest?

That being said, it is sad a champion of our game doesn't want to get the send off he deserves. I think he should attend the Brownlow as being a dual winner he has warranted it.

Eddie betts didnt use his football ability to be an outspoken member of the aboriginal community

Everyone can agree. Rightly or wrongly australia does not like uppity black men who speak up for what they feel.Good on adam for sticking it up and saying what he believed in. The backlash though is not suprising
