I think it is a 100% tax on overspending on the soft cap. If we sack him with two years to go and pay the whole amount (assuming $700k pa) then we go over the salary cap by approx $1.4M (it might be a bit less as a Rookie coach next year would get less than him). We then have to pay another $1.4M as a tax. It would cost approx $3M all up.

Sounds like a lot, but it seems like the club usually makes an extra $1-2M profit when they're playing finals and hitting membership records etc. It might actually cost them more to keep him.

More likely outcome is a mutual parting of the ways. When's Noble contracted until? A part of me suspects Simmo may end up back at Norf in his latter coaching years. But then I think he was genuinely shocked at the size of West Coast, plus now our new facilities, and it probably feels like a real backwards move to steer the can rattlers.

Depends on his family too. They seem to be pretty engrained here but money talks of North come asking.

What happened with Clarkson? Surely its outside the cap I would have thought?
There was an article last year saying they would be the first club to ever breach the soft cap and the AFL was negotiating the rate. Some suggestion it might only be 50% tax. Typical AFL, always making it up as they go along.

Never understood why richer clubs wouldn't strategically breach the soft cap. Most of the CEOs don't like it, but they are being way too compliant. I reckon Hawthorn are onto something here.

Enjoyed the A.F.L article with Simmo defending Yeo and going into bat for his team. Nice to see him get his back up when he is put on the spot.
Might be hope there yet.

Cornes is a ******* idiot
It's a shame that coaches even feel the need to comment on stuff Cornes says. Dude quit as an AFL player to become a firefighter and then quickly discovered that being a firefighter actually takes hard work and dedication, so why bother doing that when you can make better money by putting zero research and effort into your job as a footy pundit while just farting hot takes out of your face hole for a few hours a day. The AFL pays him because, despite being one of the dumbest people in Australia, he says controversial things that result in rage clicks, which result in revenue.

Seriously, people post some shit.

Kane Cornes played 300 games which has got take some damn hard work. Even in retirement, he's pushing 40 and still in cracking shape and is a very good long-distance runner. Suggesting that he couldn't hack the hard work and dedication to be a fireman is just laughable.

But if someone is offering you $300k per year to be a media pundit, or $80k per year to be a fireman... which are you going to choose?

Feel free to rag on his stupid opinions... but criticising a guy for basically wanting to make money is pretty stupid.

The fact that he makes (maybe, who knows) $300k a year to say dumb things on TV and the internet is kinda the problem.

I put a line through anything coming out of his mouth a long time ago, better things to do with my time than listen to verbal diarrhoea.

Cornes is clearly a smart guy, he plays the role of modern media pundit, ie going for clicks and retweets and what not perfectly.

Doesn't mean most of his takes are absolute crap though.
I think Simpson is bit agitated ATM so definitely frustration to the Cornes comments.

The problem with Cornes' comments is that they were both misplaced, but based in some element of fact.

While he didn't come out and say it, all his references to skinfold tests were basically a veiled claim that Elliot Yeo is carrying too much weight and that's the cause of his form dip. In reality, Yeo has had multiple injuries and is still trying to build himself back to match fitness... and he was subbed out for concussion. But the way they replayed the footage, with Cornes talking over the top of it about fitness... you'd be forgiven for thinking that Yeo was subbed out because he couldn't keep up. I'm no expert, but to my untrained eye it's pretty hard to see that Yeo is carrying extra weight.

On the other hand, Cornes is absolutely right that too many West Coast players are unfit. Simpson makes the point that going into pre-season, the overall squad fitness was very high with a number of players producing PBs... but a combination of injuries and COVID has really destroyed things. And maybe that's right... but there are players that are out on the park that look like they are carrying too much weight.

IMHO, Cornes would have been better off targeting Naitanui who has looked overweight for several seasons now, and hasn't been able to run out a game for years and just had an injury that might have been a consequence of his fitness (or lack thereof).

But I guess that's why Cornes is generally regarded to be a dickhead :)

I hope Garry Lyon is wrong, hopefully we aren't putting our eggs in the Simpson basket. The bloke is past it. He's got us into this mess and he thinks that playing a 8 year old outworked gameplan is going to get us out of it? How many ten goal losses can we take before he's gone?

Hopefully this is the last but doubt it. He's got no idea.
