Definitely was a talented team but don’t see how anyone can say more talented.

I’m taking that top 12 of the ‘18 team every time.
And you'd be wrong, the 90s team dominated at a time where it was much harder for an interstate team to win, if you think the Vic Bias is bad now it was a hell of a lot worse back then.
The only place the 2018 team has a claim as being better is in the ruck division, and that's if you include Nic Nat who obviously didn't play in the GF team

The forward line is miles better, midfield including Naitanui better, 90s backline is better but McGovern, Hurn, Barrass, Sheppard + support is hardly a scrub backline.

Forward line you could possibly argue is a wash, the midfield in the 90s wins in a landslide and the backline in the 90s is better.

Are we really going to pretend the 90s had a better forward line than what will be our two all time leading goal kickers, an AA forward in Ryan, Rioli and Cripps.

Forward line, no.

Midfield and backline, yes.

I woudn't say better, but fairly even imo.
People seem to massively understate how good Sumich was in his peak and forget how good Brett Heady, Lewis and Wilson were

Agree with backline, I think midfield is at worst a draw considering the dominance of Naitanui.

I am basing it on a hypothetical where we have that list (Naitanui, Shuey, Yeo, Kelly) fit together.

The gulf between the forward lines is certainly bigger than that of the back lines.

That’s a massive hypothetical though, isn’t it. How many games would those four players have played together so far?

Peter Wilson and Brett Heady were those guys you could set your watch to to play a great game and get you over the line.

Sumich, as much as people find him weird or whatever, was a Gun FF.

JK, JD, Lecca, Cripps, Rioli was prob more talented though for sure.

The 90s backline was "all time" (dwayne) It ranks as the best in VFL/AFL let alone Eagles history

Of course it’s a hypothetical, we are talking about the talent of the two lists are we not.

I thought we were talking about whether it’s fair to have expected the recent team to have won as many flags as the 90s teams.

If their most talented players couldn’t all get on the park together, I think that’s a factor.

In hindsight one is probably a reasonable amount considering the injuries/Rioli issues.

If you told me at the end of 2018 that Naitanui would be AA 20/21 and we added Kelly in 2020 after he came 4th in the Brownlow and just had 30 and 3 in a final….

I would’ve assumed we had at the very least 1 more.

Backline solid is harsh imo, was still an elite backline.
Fair enough.

I was comparing it to the midfield.

The backline was very reliable without being flashy, apart from Wirra and a few Beau bumps, marks etc

But you'd back Glass to beat his man most contests for sure

Yeah you'd assume we'd at least make a Prelim
