Adelaide Oval Dimensions

I'm sure I read somewhere that the new dimensions would be similar to the MCG.
Read that as well. The playing surface will made wider when the Chapel Stands come down...or something to that. You would think it would be in our best interest to make the dimensions MCG friendly.

If this is as it seems, this is going to be a MONUMENTAL stuff up. I have no idea where they will find an extra 20ish metres for the Eastern Side, the actual distance from the existing perimeter fence to the oval fence would be 20 metres. Cannot believe this hasn't been addressed earlier, it's like noone actually thought of it until now.

One of the reasons Geelong struggles is because they are used to the narrow confines of Kardinia Park and can't adjust to the MCG. I'd hate for us to have the same disadvantage at our new home.

The greatest impediment is having a stadium with a roof. How many teams that use Docklands as a home ground have won the premiership?

the council gave the AO/SMA an extra 50 metres to the east of the stadium a while back (90's?) so they have the capacity to move back a bit.

I am concerned about how narrow the ground is, and the "square" pockets. Sure it could be a home advantage, but what happens when we play away and in Grand Finals??

Hope it is rounded out a bit more for AFL footy, as a rectangle is not a good ground to play Footy on.

in reality, I'm sure for that 1 or 2 games every decade we will be alright, given we also play H&A games there.

Google Earth has a distance measurement tool. Using that and making some assumptions from the Google Earth image as to where the boundary and goal to goal lines might be - I arrived at 165m x 120m. So slightly longer and narrower than Etihad (in it's current configuration).

When the SACA did the Western Stand, they corrected the old 'D' shape, smoothed the square pockets and widened the wings a little. I can't see them making the wings any smaller with this redevelopment. And considering they have the entire Eastern and Southern sides of the ground to play with, and a fair bit of space inside (and just outside) the old Vic Richardson gates, they can (within a few limits) make it as wide as they like.

I have faith that it won't be a monumental ****-up, but time will tell.

BTW, Patterson Stadium is long and thin, apparently 191x132 fence to fence, 175x122 line to line.

I remember hearing it would be the same length as the MCG but 2-3 metres thinner. Which I think is a decent size.

I've looked everywhere ....even on the Adelaide oval site that has everything, but the answer to my question.

What will be the new oval dimensions (not fence to fence) of the Adelaide oval development:confused:

Football park was developed with the view of matching as close as possible the MCG ....where the GF is played

Adelaide oval currently has weird dimensions and i am hoping they are planning to alter the playing dimensions so it doesn't become an issue down the track

Current Adelaide Oval dimensions are 190 x 125 fence to fence ....taking off 10mtrs at the ends and 6mtrs off each side for the playing dimension ....we're left with

Adelaide Oval: 170 x 113
Football Park: 165 x 133
MCG: 160 x 141
Etihad: 159.5 x 128.8

still seems very narrow and i haven't been able to find the new dimension?? .....can anyone help?
I've got a fuzzy memory that Football Park was designed to be the same size as Waverley Oval because GF's were going to be played there. There used to be much issue with the cricketers and MCG.

I doubt it. I think you'll find that Football Park was designed and built before Waverley Park. Football Park opened in 1971. I don't think Waverley Park came into being until the mid 70's.

Looking at this image and following the curve of the new terrace being built in front of the hill, it doesn't look likely that its going to be any wider than it was before the redevelopment started:

That looks like a temporary fence to me. I don't think this photo gives us any more information either way.

Like I've said before, I have a small amount of faith in the intelligence of people ... I can't imagine they would make it any smaller, and I can't imagine someone of power didn't say "let's make sure it's symmetrical" early in the planning phase.

EDIT: Also, the terrace in front of the hill is temporary. It will be seating until the stadium is finished, and then returned to "hill status".

No, it's the other way around.
Waverley opened (first match) in 1970.
Footy Park's first match was in 1974.

Adelaide has always been too narrow. When the cricket season is on if they select a pitch off centre then one boundry is rediculously small. If the powers to be spend all this money and dont widen the playing surface then to me its all been a waste of time. '
Perhaps that why there has never been any mention about the adjustments to the ground. Its typical of most corporations that dont want to advise the public what they are really doing for fear of a backlash and as its still in the building phase they would be forced to make changes.

My apologies - you're correct. I was actually at the first game (Centrals vs North). I don't know why I thought it was 1971. Early stage Alzheimers is my only explanation.
