Adelaide Oval's stunning success this season is the glossy wallpaper covering ugly cracks in AFL crowd figures.

But Docklands had the worst crowd numbers in its history and the MCG also featured its lowest crowds since 2006, when the members stand was being redeveloped.

Undoubtedly the highlight of this year for the league has been the Adelaide Oval redevelopment.

The total crowd figure at the ground for Port Adelaide and Adelaide home-and-away games was 1,016,514, at an average of 46,205.

That is a massive increase on the 665,808 total for Football Park's swansong last year, with an average of only 30,264.

I actually prefer Docklands to the MCG when I go to Melbourne.

Agree with the headline that AO papers over the cracks, the ASAGA investigation has really dragged down Melbourne crowds IMO as well as some really bad scheduling.

Adelaide oval appears to be the best ground in Australia for sport watching , want to get there one day for cricket or footy !

On the other matter poor seasons from Carlton , the decline in the magpies and s$&@ scheduling has hurt MCG crowds ,.... The afl needs one of these two in the top 4 for consistent big crowds @ the MCG !!

I'd imagine fewer neutrals are going to games in Melbourne because most match ups are entirely predictable.

The entire competition needs invigoration.

A couple of issues in downtown Melbourne:
  1. Fox Footy - a real alternative to sitting in the rain/the cold
  2. Forking out for a membership,so save a buck watching away games at the local with mates
Not an Adelaide experience, but it may be a trend in Melbourne.

Exclude the Adelaide Oval games and the h&a average was the lowest since 1996.

That's like saying take out Clarke's double century and Australia would have made a low score. When Port crowds were abysmal and affecting the total attendances no-one said they were dragging us down. Total attendances for the year means just that. Adelaide is a part of the AFL competition as far as I know.

Good time to give Crows and Power all the crap timeslots then, so the 'big' Vic clubs can attract a crowd on Friday night.

Don't get ahead of yourself. Until this year finals crowds for Port and Adelaide were abysmal-even in the successful years and no Victorian club has resorted to covering empty seats with banners. It's amazing how quickly we forget.

It's valid as long as it's acknowledged that they're two different quantities. Perfectly reasonable and informative to state "no Australian batsman except Clarke averaged 40 for the series".

How about "average AFL attendance outside SA was the lowest since 1996"?

Just to clarify, are you saying that if we got rid of all SA-crowd results in all years when assessing crowds, that this would be the lowest since 1996?

There's no doubt that the recent saga played out regarding Essendon has turned droves of people off the game a bit.

There's really no other reason I can think of...

Carlton and Collingwood having disappointing seasons would contribute I would have thought.

yeah and I'm pretty sure our crowds have been down as well. When you get us, carlton and collingwood having ordinary seasons it's bound to be down on numbers.

Now we know who got the wallpapering contract...

Ron The Bear - what are the total attendances excluding Crows & Power? Both GCS and GWS push down the averages.

Excluding all home & away games involving Adelaide and/or PA

Richmond starting the season 3-10 knocked a lot of enthusiasm out of the supporters too. Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon and Richmond all had disappointing years, and saw decreases in their attendence.

There are more reasons than the Essendon saga which most other supporters couldnt give a stuff about.

As Menzies once said dont touch the "hip pocket nerve" and the AFL did just that by increasing prices and on top of that you had very unfriendly game times esp in Melbourne If the AFL address these issues next year Im certain the Melbourne crowds will bounce back.
Playing matches in Tassie ,Cairns,Alice Springs and Darwin drags the ave down as well.

What impact would that have on anyone except maybe essendon fans going to the footy?
