Internal trials starting this weekend.

Will be keeping the ratings thread separate to the attendance thread this year.

Notes

Oztam have now moved completely to VOZ. At present this means no Fox or Kayo streams seem to be appearing on the oztam lists. Reach is now the focus of the Oztam reporting although an average for Linear is still being reported.

* NOTE: NEW METRICS AND REPORTS *

  • Total TV Overnight Top 30 and Consolidated 7 Top 30 reach is calculated using cumulative unique audiences watching 1 min of broadcast TV and 15 sec of BVOD.
  • Total TV National audience is calculated using the audience average for the program as time-coded by the Network across 5CM and all regional markets nationally watching on broadcast TV.
  • BVOD national audience is calculated using the total number of minutes watched (multiplied by co-viewing factor) divided by the length of the program.

Will attempt to get as much data as possible, but Oztam not making it easy any more.

Friday Night #AFL
Average 650,000
Reach 1.864 million
This is just ahead of the season average for Sevens Friday coverage at a 640,000 average with an average reach of 1.884 million.

A sentiment literally limited to Bigfooty and Channel 7. But you have a thread for that.
I understand you're protective about your history and putting time into collecting data Wookie and everyone here thanks you for that, but that isn't true, because the economics of football in today's era goes far beyond the selling of an average ad space on free-to-air TV, and there are very reasonable arguments as to the purpose and benefit of reach.

I dont need your thanks or understanding, and it is absolutely true. Its got nothing to do with anything Ive done, its the absolute sentiment in the industry at the moment as far as anyone who has published an opinion, or who i have worked with is concerned.

Reach has been a Seven crusade, driven by Seven and....No one else (other than Oztam, which it part owns). And now welcome to Bigfooty where its now holy writ and woe betide anyone who disagrees.

Sunday Afternoon AFL rated an average audience of 329,000 with a reach of 1.243 million. This season Sunday AFL has rated an average audience of 363,000 with an average reach of 1.137 million.

I'm not a television executive and I'm not looking at the data solely through the lens of the motivations of sport being a television product though.

Other people are allowed to come to reasonable conclusions that disagree with you, and I don't think I'm breaking any forum rules or being belligerent by doing so.

I think you're underselling it Wookie. Reach explains why the AFL get consistently more fron TV than the NRL. And the difference is significant.
It's fine to say "the industry", but money talks.

Of course it's not the be all and end all - far from it. But it's a measure that's too important to be completely disregarded.

Ive never said they cant disagree with me. And I never said you were being anything of the sort. Others have made it personal, and that I will object to when it happens. I did not do so here.

Im on record as saying that while Reach is more reflective of the AFL position in the landscape, but still a ridiculous measure of any accurate viewing. But then Ive also said that we dont really have access to everything that Execs use to determine rights agreements either.

Reach may well be a part of that. Its just that few seem to believe its the case outside of Bigfooty and Seven.

It's fine to say "the industry", but money talks.

To be fair even the ad industry seems to have a divide on this one.

Of course it's not the be all and end all - far from it. But it's a measure that's too important to be completely disregarded.

Nothing is absolute.

Football codes started strongly

Martin Medcraf, Foxtel Media sport sales and partnerships director, explained: “The AFL and NRL have both had thrilling seasons this year and it’s clear that the fans have loved the excitement from the very start. In early April, the second annual AFL Gather Round broke AFL streaming records across Kayo Sports, with a record of 252 million minutes viewed. This made the 2024 Gather Round the #1 streamed AFL round of all time.

“With the NRL, the Vegas Round matches featuring the Sea Eagles vs the Rabbitohs and the Roosters vs the Broncos are the top two rating matches for the season, so far.”

AFL and NRL both grew audience significantly

Medcraf continued: “The enthusiasm continued from there. The AFL 2024 season has seen an increase of 33% on 2023, with an average audience of 397,000. Last Sunday’s Fremantle vs Port Adelaide game led the season with an average audience of 710,000 across Kantar STB and streaming VPM, closely followed by the Carlton vs St Kilda game at 685,000.

NRL rounds 1-25 followed suit with an average audience of 483,000, +18% from last season.

Foxtel Media sponsorship campaigns overdeliver

Viewing numbers indicate the audience has been happy with the coverage. A total of 57 sponsorship packagers sold have also given advertisers reason to be pleased, said Medcraf.

“The viewer success is backed by incredible sponsor engagement, with 30 sponsors for the AFL season and 27 for the NRL. Moreover, all sponsors have been able to campaign plan using Kantar Media analysed viewing data for the most accurate audience insights. In fact, every campaign is on track to overdeliver for the season based on these insights.

Fox Footy show all 207 matches x 397k = 82.179m

Seven get a minimum off 77 games x 345k = 26.565, so that must include the Fox produced games shown on 7 as part of the home state team TV deal conditions.

47.668m / 345k = 138.2 matches rounding so 138 matches
47.688m / 498k = 95.75 matches rounding so 96 matches

Wookie is the 0.20m difference for the two Seven figures just a typo?

That's a massive number for Freo v port. Interesting the nrl can never crack the 700k figure for streaming eyeballs, yet the afl regularly seem to.

It also goes back to, who would ever stream something they are not interested in? so reach for streaming is even more indicative of actual interest, than somebody flicking around with a remote controller on tv.

Also on your second post, Geelong v port the biggest viewer reach for the year and by some margin? That's really surprising.

Those 3 NRL matches in the top 20 FTA by reach are only there due to being played when Channel 9 was showing the Olympics and people selected the channel expecting to see it.

Lol I did this exact thing myself, flicked on 209 every night during the Olympics, then randomly there was an nrl game on in an empty stadium instead. I thought 'wow', they actually kicked the Olympics off for this in Melbourne.

I think the reach for the geelong/port game probably shouldn't count because the fremantle/sydney game was played on the friday night as well.

on FTA at least, Power/Cats is well down on the first final last year (Pies/Dees 1.043m on FTA) and down on the first Port final (Lions/Port 868,000 on FTA)

Well one was a close game, one was a thrashing. Which is why reach is a better metric of actual interest. 2.6 mill not including foxtel and kayo would push the amount of people that tuned in to well over 3 million. Can't be disappointed with that.

I know they cant do much about it because its an afc/fifa descision but sheesh FA and 10 must be annoyed having to go against the afl finals and nrl
