Do you honestly think 2 games of Rugby league would be allowed to be played a week before the AFL Grand Final?

Under the contract as it stands, yes. Under the old contract almost certainly not. Times have changed. The Victorian Government couldnt give a crap about code wars.

I'm new to this whole NRL thing, but I don't understand why crowds are so low in Sydney. Apparently Bulldogs and Dragons are 2 of the biggest clubs in the NRL. How do they draw only 33K to an EF at ANZ?

Bulldogs, arguably the smallest Melbourne club, drew 60K vs an interstate team in Adelaide.

Because going to the footy is not such a big thing in Sydney. Transport is part of it, especially on a Friday night.

Why spend 1 1/2 to 2 hours each way to go to a game, have to pay to get in, then pay through the nose for food and drinks, when you can just walk down to the pub and watch the game there with your mates. Even more so when there are double headers - can watch both games on TV.

I wonder whether this whole Hayne/ NFL thing is an attempt to muscle in on the NRL.

It's more of a question as to how much you invest in your club. For arguments sake, there are large numbers of people that make their way to the MCG and Etihad on Friday nights from Pakenham and beyond Frankston. It could be argued that Sydney as a population doesn't embrace cultural activities like Melbourne due to a number of reasons.

I think the pub rationale is fairly limited to part time barracker's, as opposed to rusted on supporters. As an example, when Friday night footy is played outside of Melbourne, pubs are busy, when it's in Melbourne, pubs are busy.

The swans fans seem to consistently seem to turn up, then we have endless excuses from the nrl fans in why their crowds are as bad as they are

Not even the Swans fans will go to ANZ if they can avoid it. Watch the crowd this weekend be sub 40,000.

Having both Grand Finals on in the same weekend really puts some perspective into things. These are the respective narratives for the week:

AFL: "Is there anyway I can get a ticket? Please get me a ticket, I'll sell my own mother if I have to."

NRL: "Please, please, please buy our tickets. Look, here's a TV ad campaign begging people to come along. I know, let's bill the event as NRL Grand Final featuring Cold Chisel, that might work."

You can still get tickets in most categories for the NRL GF.

There are plenty off cheap tickets going on eBay for the nrl, will be interesting if they end up selling the grand final out

I'd recommend everyone watch the NRL grand final on Sunday. The spectacle is incredible. The AFL has a lot to learn.

3 pages of tickets for sale on viagogo.

To be fair its an all queensland grand final.
They're essentially handing out tickets! That's crazy cheap for GF

There is a fair amount of truth in that.

It does display that NRL is not as popular in its heartlands as Football. Brisbane v Port was easily sold out, and that was probably the hardest sell.

Thats because MCC Members are far more numerous than ANZ Stadium ones, AFL Members exist where the NRL doesnt have them, and the AFL has a far greater corporate backing to cover as well. Throw in the fact that there are almost no tickets available to the public once the clubs have gotten through their shares, and well...its not really a comparable situation.

Do you honestly believe that to be a reason as to why the NRL fail to fill their stadiums for their biggest events?

The NRL did alright in is three SOO

It depends what you are comparing them against. The AFL has one of the most strongest crowds and crowd attendance culture per population / support in the world. It should be proud of that.

The NRL against that always pales in comparison, it doesnt even compete really.

That said against other rugby competitions / sporting competitions in the world it does pretty well for a domestic comp.

Don't underestimate the culture of attendence. My brother is a massive broncos fan living in sydney and tbh I doubt he will go to the GF. Thats probably fairly standard par for the course. I doubt the same attitude / culture exists in Melbourne.

They do sell their stadiums out for Origins and the Grand Final. Maybe not for home and away matches, and maybe not as fast as the AFL sells out their Grand Final, but their biggest games are Origin and they generally sell out.

NRL can certainly do pre-game entertainment better lol :p. I gave it a watch and will certainly give them that. Different time slot would play a massive role in the vibe however.

Yep. The afternoon start is fugly on TV and draws lower ratings than it otherwise would.

Makes entertainment look half as good, and makes the game look like it's poor quality.

Tradition or not, the AFL grand final needs to emulate that of the NRL grand final. Or at least a twilight start!
