Cliff notes:
  • Stepping back from his current senior role following the 2023 AFL Draft
  • Transition plan, raised the possibility with Vozzo in April
  • Replacement is Matt Rosa, whose thread is here: Welcome to Essendon Matthew Rosa – AFL Talent & Operations Manager!
Full text from media release said:
To coincide with this announcement, the Club’s General Manager of List and Recruiting, Adrian Dodoro, has made the decision to take a step back from his current senior role following this year’s NAB AFL National Draft. He will lead the Club through the upcoming 2023 Trade and Draft period in his current position prior to transitioning to and assisting Matt Rosa moving forward.
Dodoro, an Essendon Life Member, has played a significant role at the Bombers over nearly three decades and said the time was right to take a step back.
“I approached Craig back in April to discuss the concept of transition and I feel that now is the right time to make this decision,” Dodoro said.
"I sat on the panel to assist in the selection of Matt, and I believe he will be an outstanding acquisition to the Club for years to come. I look forward to working with Matt moving forward.
“These roles are very taxing on individuals and their families and it just feels like that. After nearly three decades and with stability in key roles at the Club, now is the right time for me to take a step back in to a role which will provide me and my family with a better work life balance.
“More immediately, we have an important few months coming up and I’m looking forward to playing my part to deliver a strong Trade and Draft period for the Club to ensure that the playing list is in a strong position for the future.”
Essendon CEO Craig Vozzo acknowledged the significant impact Dodoro has made at the Club since joining in a full-time role in 1998.
“Adrian is a highly respected Life Member of the Essendon Football Club and has made an enormous contribution to the Club and the wider AFL industry during his time in football, including assisting to navigate the Club through unprecedented and challenging periods,” Vozzo said.
“Throughout his time at the Bombers, Adrian’s commitment and passion to take the Club forward in its list management and recruiting, has been unquestionable. Some of the Champions of Essendon have been identified and selected by Adrian, and we will always be grateful for the important and enduring role he has played.
“On behalf of the entire Club, we would like to acknowledge Adrian’s selfless decision and we look forward to his ongoing contribution to the Club.
“Adrian will work with Matt to ensure a smooth hand-over and a successful transition of responsibilities.”

If I were Vozzo and Scott, having Dodo in my hand would be perfect.

Diminish his power, but still have him there. Why get rid of him now? It’s year one. Let’s see how things go. If we are in year three and we are still bottom half of the table, then he is used as the scapegoat. The supporters will be pleased, gives a bit more time for Scott and Vozzo to turn things around.

That’s the glass half full thinking.
You can find a scapegoat anywhere, at any time.

We could sack the medical team, some assistants, board member etc - plenty of levers to pull at any given moment (justified or not).

It's a bizarre situation. If we believe what is said, he's the list manager without any say on the list. Is that the setup at any other well functioning club?

To me; if he has SOME say, then that is a huge error on behalf of the club as demonstrated by decades of underachievement. If he has NO say, then wtf is he still doing there?

Personally, I'd sack Dodo and Dodo JR (RFK) and headhunt some recruitment talent. We cleared out a lot of the rot from the previous regime, but there's still more to go.

If we hit this off season and re-sign Parish, re-sign Heppell and don't delist about 8 jobbers well then, Stephen A said it best;

Once the media get a hold of Dodoro then it really is a ticking time bomb
One can only hope. I still don’t think most media go anywhere near hard enough though.

For example, when RoCo was going through everything wrong with the club during the schemozzle of last year, he barely got a mention. Not sure what has changed in less than 12 months that’s changed his mind.

Risky. Ppl seem to say his power has been diminished.

How many coaches/CEO has dodo seen off now? Bigger names then scott have perished under dodos list builds.

See ya Scott and vozzo if this is the thinking.

So thought every new administration. None have made it past 3 years still holding the power they started with, if they were even still employed.

Almost everything else has been addressed 😅

Why get rid of him now? How about this reason: he’s completely incompetent and has demonstrated that for more than 2 decades.

In reality, the reason he hasn't been sacked is because he isn't completely incompetent. If he was he'd have been gone long ago.

He's somewhat competent, manages to generally draft players that are OK in isolation but don't fit well together as a unit e.g. Merrett, Parish, McGrath, Shiel, Smith are all pretty much the same size and shape. That's why we tend to finish between 8th and 15th. We have enough decent players to not be totally shit, but not enough to be actually good.

I'm not sure Melbourne did anything particularly clever in having St Kilda choose McCartin over Petracca, that was pure luck, but they'd deliberately drafted complementary types of players that fit well together when means they're able to maximise what Petracca can do. Richmond the same with Dusty. Meanwhile we have Parish supported by players with the same weaknesses he has, meaning whilst he's a good player individually we're not a complimentary unit through the middle.

We also haven't been fortunate with the drafts our selections have landed in; Pick 1 in a year without any standout options (McCluggage would look horrible playing for us, Taranto is a better fit but is more of a butcher than Parish & Shiel who people complain about) and 3 x Top-10 selections in a draft ruined by pandemic restrictions at a time when a rebuild was basically forced upon the club. Maybe Hobbs falling to our pick will be a selection we look back on and think we got lucky in a few years time.

I asked AI to help me pull a prank:

Create a news headline graphic in Essendon Football Club themes, with a photo of Adrian Dodoro on it. The headline in big writing should say "Legend Status", with a small sentence underneath that says "Essendon list manager and Club Member, Adrian Dodoro, has today been elevated to Legend status. Dodoro is the second ever Legend of the club, following legendary coach Kevin Sheedy."

This is what it created. So there you go. Enjoy. gencraft_image_1692597161924-1.png
