Now that's a choke! Nearly winless wasn't it

Eagles had the best %, best defense and nearly the best offence of the 10 sides. Whilst the Bays had neariy the perfect season they weren’t as dominant as one thought. Eagles lost 3 of their first 6 games but then 10 of the next 12.

Eagles did beat up on a undercooked Crows side twice.

The old Port in the SANFL did, not the Port frauds in the AFL tho.
They put average teams to the sword all year.

I think in both SANFL games against the Crows the Eagles had more players with AFL experience than the Crows did.

Why should the SANFL be just a feeder comp for the AFL?…Theres other leagues for that.
For starters, the SANFL barely feeds the AFL and conversely, mostly survives on that comps sloppy seconds. I’m all for players returning to their club of origin post AFL career, and I think there should be accommodations for that. To be fair, a few of the Eagles ex-AFL players are returned juniors - kudos to them - but there is something deeply uninteresting about delisted AFL players with no connection to SA footy running around in the comp. I’d much prefer to watch young players who have gone through the junior ranks having a crack.

The quality might not be quite as good, but let’s face it, no one is watching the SANFL for its “quality”. The magic still lies in those clubs having some semblance of a connection with their local communities. Them loading up on AFL rejects does nothing to foster this connection and I think that the League is actually worse off for having them.

Couldn't beat them in the H&A. It was theirs to lose. Agree the eagles were a great team this year and deserve the flag.

Eagles played finals football. Glenelg tried to skirt the contest. Full credit to the Eagles.
I agree with you there. The Eagles were more desperate and also used the ball more quickly than the Bays. The Bays were too slow for the pressure shown by the Eagles. A good victory :)

The Menzels were in the paper when they switched clubs saying they were hooked up with jobs IIRC.

On Pixel 5 using BigFooty.com mobile app

that’ll do it

I remember when Johnny Platten went to Hawthorn, he miraculously was given a brand new BMW. Whereas Mark Naley was given a job by Carlton

Naley worked at a fancy assed luxury car dealership. And drove home every night in a Porsche, Maserati and the like. A different one every night.

none of which was ever his, and so nothing for the ATO to concern themselves about ;)

Jobs have always been currency

Strange take.
SANFL clubs has been recruiting players from around the country for decades (since pre-AFL days).
They've always been a mix of local juniors, country zone footballers and players from interstate.

These days most of South Australian ex-AFL players return to their original club, with a few exceptions.
So what if a few others have never played in SA before?
With the draft and other players being lost to other leagues for more money and less commitment, the SANFL clubs have a never ending challenge to stay competitive. They will recruit whoever fits their needs.

No one is interested in watching a pseudo U/23 league.

Glenelg tried to go all physical before the opening bounce.

You could sense the level of entitlement from the players (and to an extent their fans) that they were just going to walk in and take the flag because they came home strong in the 2nd semi final.

They heavily disrespected the Eagles and embarrassed themselves in the process.

I even had a Glenelg supporting mate try to tell me their Reserves win over Centrals was revenge for the 2008 League Grand Final

I watched about the first half of bays/south prelim and that was better quality than nearly every AFL game I'd seen this year.

It’s a who’s who of AFL rejects… and is therefore incredibly dull… controversial opinion: the SANFL should make it mandatory that all bar 6-8 players from each team must be under 23 years of age.
A typically myopic AFL based focus on the SANFL. The under 23 suggestion is ridiculous, why would you limit anyone from playing in the best competition possible that they’re able to compete in and why would you limit it so greatly to the age group most likely to be raided by AFL clubs throughout the year? If anything this suggestion would kill off the competition once and for all, not everything has to be based around the AFL to the nth degree.

You could have numerous players coming through the junior pathways at an SANFL club that would normally be 200/250 game players prohibited from doing so because of some meaningless thought fart.

Glenelg are after all a "Roofless Club". :'(

My biggest take was that Glenelg were uncharacteristically fumbly for a top finals team. Never had 2 or 3 clean takes in row and made it easy for the Eagles to create turnovers and stoppages (where Redden came into his own). Score board pressure then contributed to very average decision making as well.

I remember getting served by Jonny Platten at a pub in Lonsdale street back in 1989. I am guessing that he ran the pub.
