Opinion AFL 2024 Round 16 - Weekend Wrap & Liked, Learnt, Hated

Missed a golden opportunity to boost our percentage today. Should be over 100 now not 97. Left at least 5-6 goals on the table. That's what could cost us come end of the season. Lots of mini elimination type finals coming up starting next weekend. Still have Roos and Eagles and Tigers again. At worst we get to 11 wins which is exceeding expectations from the start of the year as it is.

Even in the unlikely event you lost every game remaining its still a good year in terms of expectations.
Some tough ones left for sure, but who knows, Freo down here in Tassie, good chance for instance.

Adelaide in Adelaide as well will not be easy as they have a point to prove ATM. Haven't played Carlton yet which will be the biggest test the run home

Liked:
  • B2B 10 goal wins for the Blues, can’t recall the last time that happened
  • Returning players getting through unscathed (JDG, Cerra for example)
  • Gold Coast put together a very mature win
  • Top end players are putting on a show every week Cripps, Daicos, Bont, Neale, Walsh, Serong and Anderson all had sublime performances this weekend and will all feature prominently on Brownlow night

Learnt:
  • Teams will still hesitate to tag Daicos despite his ability to turn games
  • Fremantle are the 3rd best team in it, edging out Collingwood, Brisbane, Essendon and Western Bulldogs (for now)
  • Additionally, Fremantle can play some exciting football
  • Hawthorn aren’t a sneaky good side, they are a genuine finals chance

Hated:
  • Dustys injury, let’s hope it’s not severe
  • Kennedy’s knee, probably under appreciated by rivals but loved by Carlton fans, hope it’s not serious
  • The grey area in interpretation of the rushed behind rule, I thought that was correct and Razor Ray seems to think so as well.. but - many experts who know the game better disagree. Needs clarity!
  • HTB seems to be as confusing as ever, really disappointed with some of the non-calls particularly in Essendon/Geelong

Rounds 14 and 16 last year were really close (59 and 60 being the margins).
The last time Carlton successfully did that would be Rounds 2 and 3 in 2012 - beating Brisbane by 91 and Collingwood by 60 (though the latter wasn't technically 10 goals, if that's important).

I'll never understand this. The fact that a stack of teams don't even try is mind blowing.

The following week they got beaten up physically by a drug fuelled Essendon

Liked : Back on the winning list, Gold Coast beating the Pies..

Learnt: Bombers have not improved much if they couldn't beat my lot during their worst run of form for 20 years!

Hated: White shorts for a home game, Carlton & Hawthorn winning.

Yes !!

What the **** was happening with white shorts for the home team?

Liked Freo winning a close one against the current league leader
Learnt we might be able to make a dent in finals if we can sustain that intensity for the rest of the season
Disliked seeing the pain on Logan McDonalds face having missed the last chance kick. That one moment isn't the reason the Swans lost. The boys won't be as hard on you as you'll be on yourself.

Liked- Lions hard fought come from behind win.
- return of Ashcroft. Makes a big difference to our mid field dynamic.
Lever losing his shit and getting into it with May following Rayner's second goal :moustache:

Lever is very theatrical on the field when expressing his displeasure

Very well said. The match was lost well before that moment. Your Dockers were too good for us, especially in the first half. Would have been an unjust result if we’d pinched it.

Learnt - According to the AFL the umpiring is the "best it has ever been".

Would hate to see it when there are "too many mistakes are being made".

Melbourne would look like Vancouver after the Canucks lost the Stanley Cup to Boston.

When you know before the game starts that you would be be unable to explain what happened on the field to the new-to-the-sport friend who asks, 'what was that for?' ** then you know there is a problem with the rules and/or their interpretation...

** without putting down the Code or making comments that might be considered to paint our beloved umpiring fraternity in a less than favourable light...

Learnt that players with Bobbed back of the head hairdos look bloody awful.
Freo and Sydney had one each I think.

A Brownlow Medalist, and one of the best Ruckmen floating around.

Hated the usual stuff@! If you know me?

I agreed with Grant Thomas , also heard for the first time really,
other people realising how the mass free kick pattern of umpiring
kills games, when petty, non penalty worthy, calls, change games.
Sometimes drastically.

Saw Comments from two coaches this weekend re some frees (AT LAST)!!!!

For the first time, not in so many words , but definitely knowing that
some of the "Umps perception-habit" of four different individuals
paying petty rule calls.

Is very noticeable to people who know football?

Some which should not be a penalty full stop.
Many these do not affect the player the opponent the play or hurt anyone.
But it has on many occasions
killed momentum FOR ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, no reason but a free that
sometimes kills a teams chance.

That's not what I learnt.

Its what I hate, about unfairness.when they should call play on!
The blind stupidity and dictatorial AFL should have a look at itself.
It introduced to the greatest game on earth a spoiling of our game
They couldn't run a raffle, let alone a football league.
So maybe the worm's turning.

I enjoyed reading this as if it were a poem.
