A ho-hum start to the round with some horrifically one-sided games, followed by a ripping Sunday that delivered everything it promised. Let’s go wrapping…
Demons v Pies, Friday night: Ah splendid, Friday night footy at the G between a couple of traditional old clubs… with absolutely nothing to play for. Great bit of scheduling. But hey, if there’s one thing more fun than waiting for a dead rubber to be over, it’s waiting for a dead rubber to be over AND having to sit through a 20 minute lightning delay! Hope you all enjoyed a repeat of Antiques Roadshow or something. Trust me it would have been more interesting than this.
Hawks v North, Saturday arvo: This game was brought forward due to energy supply issues. It didn’t work, North still turned up with no energy at all. Cancel their mad Monday celebrations, they don’t deserve them. In other news, keen nature observers will have noted the return of the Cocky brown and gold coloured Hawthorn supporter in recent weeks, back from years of hibernation in the footballing wilderness. Flocking home in droves now. Did you miss them while they were gone?
Cats v Eagles, Saturday arvo: Imagine thumping a team by 93 points and still only being the second biggest winning margin of the weekend. Oh well, the Cats won’t care, they did what they had to. It wasn’t enough to jag a home final in week one, so the lucky ducks will head to beautiful downtown Adelaide for a date with Port in a couple of weeks.
Tigers v Suns, Saturday twilight: Suddenly the Suns are unbeatable away from home! Too little too late though sadly. But hey congratulations to the Tigers on their 8th wooden spoon. They somehow managed to finish behind North and the Eagles so it’s certainly well earned.
Lions v Bombers, Saturday night: Not a bad effort for the Lions to finish in 5th after looking all at sea earlier in the year. Conversely the Bombers were sitting pretty in 3rd place after their bye and then fell in a heap. Two sides with contrasting reminders that it’s a long, long season.
Swans v Crows, Saturday night: Not much to see here. The weakened Crows didn’t really fire a shot but the bruise-free Swans weren’t intent on being ruthless either.Sydney The minor premiers have got going again after they spectacularly dropped their bundle against the Dogs and Port a few weeks ago. Whether or not that translates into a successful finals campaign remains to be seen.
Dogs v Giants, Sunday arvo: Hard-fought contest in the Ballarat wind and rain, but unless you were a nervous Doggies fan it felt like they comfortably had the Giants measure as the day wore on. Thrilling elimination final coming up for the Dogs against the red hot Hawks, while for the Giants the consolation prize is that they won’t need to leave Sydney in their first couple of finals games. Also, can we call an end to this truly awful Mars Stadium experiment? The place is rubbish. EDIT - may have gone early on this one as _Cerberus_ and CarnTheScray alerted me to in the comments
Will withhold judgment until I can get down there and see a game live.
Blues v Saints, Sunday arvo: The end of this game was absolutely NUTS. One of the more pulsating finishes in a season that’s been full of them. It was a simple equation for the Blues: win and you’re in the finals, lose and you’re relying on another side to do the job for you. Naturally they chose option B and made it as hard as they possibly could for themselves.
Freo v Port, Sunday twilight: Stunning to think that Fremantle were sitting 3rd on the ladder after round 20. I know it was a logjam for finals spots, but going from 3rd to 10th in the space of 4 rounds takes some doing. Huge missed opportunity for the Dockers this year. Big turnaround for Port though. Kenny was booed off the ground not that long back, now they’ve finished second.
So that is that for the home and away season. Can’t wait for the finals to start next week… oh that’s right, they don’t. Can we just do away with this stupid pre-finals bye please? I don’t know a single footy supporter who likes it. Must be why the AFL insists on keeping it.
