Round 2 reminded us that a week is still a long time in footy, as a few sides put in some big turnarounds to improve on their shockers in round 1. Let’s wrap it up…
Blues v Hawks, Thursday night: Look, the Blues didn’t lack effort so you can’t really blame the players. It just goes to show how bad their coaching and gameplan are. Goodness what an uninspiring, unimaginative, uncreative, uninventive, unproductive, unattractive, ungodly brand of footy they play. I lost count of the number of times they took a mark in a dangerous position, only to handpass to some random stationary teammate or hack kick the ball up into orbit. The Hawks on the other hand looked like scoring whenever they had possession, and looked like harassing the Blues into submission whenever they didn’t. Weren’t suited to the slow track but they ground out an impressive win anyway. Well done.
Footscray v Pies, Friday night: It’s standard fare for Bigfooty to be declaring that the umpiring was rubbish in a game, but there’s an unusual number of media pundits agreeing with us this time. The Doggies were harshly treated; no doubt whatsoever. Given they were already missing a bevy of walk up starters including a superstar or two, they really didn’t need to be playing against three extra opponents carryingdelusions of self importance whistles. Given all that, they did well to get within six points. Doubt the Magpies would have gotten away with this one on another night.
Bombers v Crows, Saturday arvo: BANG. In case the jury was still out on the Crows, this answered some questions - their form is real. What a powerhouse win. If you can concede 100 points and still get up by ten goals your attack is really humming. What a luxury to be able to sub off one of your most dynamic players (and new goal of the year contender) when it isn’t even 3 quarter time. Sky’s the limit now.
Port v Tigers, Saturday twilight: Not much to see here. We knew the Tigers would be on the end of some obliterations this year and that’s what played out. Love watching that learjet Connor Rozee strut his stuff, and with him leading the way Port engineered a 163 point turnaround on their own belting from last week.
Saints v Cats, Saturday night: Great to see some tradition in footy, as the Cats ventured to Marvel to take part in their yearly ritual of losing to the Saints. Seriously what was that first half? A far cry from last week for both teams. The Cats looked like their minds were a million miles away, and the undermanned Saints took full advantage. The two Ms, Marshall and Macrae were gigantic all night. Makes you wonder why Coach Beveridge spent years at the Doggies trying to play Macrae in every position other than his best.
Lions v Eagles, Sunday arvo: The Eagles were right on track to cause the biggest upset in Australian sporting history. Massive turnaround on their no-show against the Suns last week. But the Lions eventually hit their straps, and came out a different side after their half time oranges. No shame for West Coast; when the Lions go up a gear they’ve got a level that the Eagles just aren’t capable of yet. Highly positive signs though.
North v Demons, Sunday arvo: That last term from North!! Spectacular. Smashed the Dees to smithereens. They’re improving before our eyes now, and the way they put the foot on the throat of a spent opponent was really something. You can clearly see what kind of game they’re trying to play, and it’s exciting as hell when it’s running hot. That win will do them the world of good.
Dockers v Swans, Sunday twilight: Ah, just how you wanted to spend the last bit of your weekend, am I right? Sitting back and watching two bog ordinary teams try to out-ordinary each other. At least it was a tense close finish, but that just made the game look better than it was. Maybe I’m being slightly harsh; the hot weather made it difficult for both teams to find any real fluency. Still can’t help but feel this was the equivalent of a boxing bout where both fighters threw a hundred punches and failed to land any until right at the end.
