STATE OF PLAY:
  • The game is out for Steam and PlayStation. There have been issues with Xbox release and it is unclear when the game will be available.
  • Big Ant are aware that there are playability issues & bugs at present.
  • Content has been temporarily removed from the game to identify where the issues lie.
  • This content will be re-introduced via patches in the coming days.
  • Big Ant have released a summary of what is to be reintroduced, which can be seen below.

They call it Dustys Don't Argue mode!!
I spent a whole quarter mucking around trying to don't argue everyone with Worps. Gave away so many free kicks but there was a lot of internal peace watching the Worpedo palm off a bunch of Bombers players
 
Yeah, I've emailed the support staff to show them tackling desperately needs attention.

Yeah tackling has been a tricky one for me. I'm just concentrating on the next action of the ball rather than bothering with the tackles. I'll hold triangle, tap it, and they'll tackle the player maybe 10% of the time. Yet they'll tackle me into the ground, then I somehow squeeze a handball out 5 seconds later to an opposition player

Adding to that though, this morning when I had a quick go after last nights patch, I did notice that I getting a bit more freedom in the middle to pick the ball up and ping a handball or spin around and smash the ball goalward. The instant hovering and tackling eased a bit for me

I'd imagine at this stage, BigAnt has started buying canned coffees wholesale/in bulk for JNT BA and team to get through the week. Fingers crossed tonights patch is done early and they can hit the pub. Still some stability issues being thrown around so I'd imagine that's still a focus and big patches/features will be early next week once they've had a bit of sleep

So gang tackles would be awesome... but I feel that it's likely to be a feature that would be targeted for AFL 24...
AFL 23 is (kinda) the first release of the game.... so there are parts that I'm guessing, didn't make it because everything couldn't be in there.

I think the current 1v1 tackling they've implemented is good.... Not just ball-up/holding the ball that we've always seen.... but there's
- stripping the ball
- shrugged tackles
- hold tackles
- arms up (to get a handball)
- arms up (to get a kick)
- drag down tackles (and hopefully get a handball/kick)
Some of the animations need work... and I haven't quite figured out the Power modifier variations yet (like I've seen people do a push in the back, or a late tackle)... but for what it is, I like it much better than previous titles.

Also breaking tackles and selling candy is way to OP you can legit run the whole ground and just evade everyone without getting tackled.

My gripe with these are that the animations seem too slow... it feels like it takes forever to side-step...when compared to the flat-out sprinting pace.
We'll have to see how much the gameplay (in particular the teleporting issues) is fixed up with the upcoming patches.... but for me, this will be one suggestion I'll send to the support team.
 
Anyone managed the 5 minutes straight of possession trophy so far? Doing head in. Keep chipping it around but always have that one mistake where the opposition intercepts it, most I've managed it probably 3 minutes. Feel like camera selection plays a big role in this one

Yeah I’ve had feedback from the dev team on one of my tickets saying they’re still working on that.

I would have thought this would have been pretty easy the first couple of days after release when the opposition didn't tackle you

I got to about 4 minutes 10 seconds before my player decided to kick it backwards

Maybe if they tell me gang tackles are not possible to put in, I'll ask if they can at least have the user controller players and their CPU to stand and cover around the opposition player so that it prevents the ball from popping out, or to just bring in a "spoil/slap" mechanic for standing tackles, just like for marking contests, so the ball pops out to the users advantage. Similar for ground tackles, use the "tapping along the ground" mechanic so the ball pops out to your advantage. I think that would be a good solution to the lack of tackling support to use the existing slapping mechanics for tackles.

Yeah in play now, end of the game which I had won I believe... went to the bathroom and came back and it came up as trophy completed lol
 
I've still got default bald headed generic coaches for every team. Yet to see an actual coach since I bought the game. Thought they'd be back in by now.

Given tackling was apparently mocapped this year, maybe they only had two mocap suits so gang tackles weren't an option 🤣
 
If anyone played Aussie Rules on NES, the developer actually had the bar moving at ridiculous speeds when when you were far from the goal but as you closer the bar slowed down and the chances of getting a goal increased.
Only problem with that set-up though is you have a window in which you can kick for goal, not when you want.
I honestly reckon real player stat's should be 75% and player skill 25% on accuracy... A bit like Nba2k... You don't even need to be facing goal and the way you are facing would depend on the sort of kicking action.
