STATE OF PLAY:
  • The game is out for Steam and PlayStation. There have been issues with Xbox release and it is unclear when the game will be available.
  • Big Ant are aware that there are playability issues & bugs at present.
  • Content has been temporarily removed from the game to identify where the issues lie.
  • This content will be re-introduced via patches in the coming days.
  • Big Ant have released a summary of what is to be reintroduced, which can be seen below.

AI or human controlled ?

I've missed a few goals on the run some running directly in front, but mostly at an angle.
Likewise. The AI doesn't seem to miss many though.

BigAntStudios I know this isn't the place for suggestions, but everyone else is doing it...
Would it be possible in Team Creation to have like an auto create players to fill a new custom squad to the required 23 or say 27 players. I only ask because I am rather lazy and have found creating players each from scratch very very time consuming. I noted in making players that they get assigned names which is awesome. For most that may be enough.
Also on PC, the default players to pick from have lots of tatts. Whilst I like the odd tattoo here and there, most players out there in leagues we might custom don't have masses. It would save time leaving the skin bare and then adding them in later.

So you want auto-create with no Tattoos, and you'll just add some, or not, after the generation?
 
Maybe 10 year olds are different these days, but as a young'un I think I put up with some pretty broken mechanics and stability in games when the wonder and imagination was so strong. Games like TES III: Morrowind comes to mind. Crashed to desktop like a b*tch, FPS all the over the show, glitches, but boy did it spark wonder and intrigue in me.

But yes AFL 23 as it's coming along should be okay.
I'm showing my age but I remember in x-wing you had to free up memory/create a dos boot disk and if a game was broken then it wouldn't be fixed as we didn't have the internet.

Crashing is the biggest issue for us, but some people crash, others do not. It is weird as it's meant to be a closed system with all OS etc. being equal, we expect it more on PC as there are many different configurations but not on Consoles. In any case, the team here are looking at every crash report sent and rectifying them.

It is a weird one, as Ross just commented. On PS4 the patch the other day had me crashing once a match, then the next day patch (yesterday) had it stable for the whole morning I played. Haven't tried the latest patch yet.

Must be very frustrating for the BA devs having to whack-a-mole it.
 
The crashes I've had appear to be random events, as I said recently my system has hung at the AFL '23 title screen the very first instance of launching the game for the first time after the new daily update has installed.

My experiences of hangs and crashing back to desktop in game are largely in "play now" matches (as I'm too scared to go anywhere near career or management mode for the time being lol). They've occurred while taking marks in the backline/midfield/forward 50, had a crash while pushing forward running just outside (or inside) the forward 50. Have had it crash after a kick for goal has gone through for a goal (or behind) and it freezes at the moment the ball goes into the crowd.

My understanding is that it's easier for the PS5 users to report the crashes as they happen, compared to it occuring on pc where we've got to go to the support link on bigant's site.... and just type a description (or screenshots) of the issue ?

One thing I will say for realism, the missed shots the AI did have in my plays usually resulted from defensive pressure I was applying. If they're in the clear though, just mark it down as a goal every time haha

Right now I'm trying to fill my custom team, but creating players can be rather time consuming. Would be great to have an option to auto fill with random players, and give us the ability to change their names, appearance, etc. If we had an auto generated list, would make it easier to have a complete team whose skills are suited to their positions as well.

I've had some very inaccurate AI games . Playing medium 3.5 quarters on season mode, had Geelong kick 6.7 with 6 of those behinds being on the run. Seems to be real hit and miss though - I never miss on the run, its the set shots from 50 I always spray (or don't make the distance)

Maybe one in 20 has missed on the run when I've played. Doesn't matter who is kicking or how long you press the button either (ie it goes into red on the metre and still straight through the middle).

I also always admittedly feel weird having Harry McKay have actual drop punt set shots and nailing them :tearsofjoy:

But then again, he is technically capable of them, just Big Ant can hardly account for the mental side of things.
 
BigAntStudios I saw someone made a comment about adding in randomised players to fill a squad - this is a great idea, alternatively the option of a ‘Randomise’ button whilst creating a player could be an idea, have it completely randomise their name, looks and attributes. I also think an important addition would be a ‘Copy’ function, to copy paste a player you have created, or an ‘Import’ function similar to NBA 2k where you can import looks or statistics from a player you have previously created. I’m sure i’m also not the only person looking for direct confirmation on when/if we will be able to use our custom created teams in Season and Management mode, i’ve always had more enjoyment in my AFL game experience using custom squads, especially through seasons, one of my favourite parts of the original AFL Live by BigAnt was making my own team of rookies and playing through their first year in the AFL.
