Release a game that works with core features but doesn't have AFLW, Pro Team etc this year

or

Release a game completely broken and unplayable on release with limited management mode, still missing features and questionable playability a couple of month post release but has AFLW and Pro Team etc.

Geez what an agenda, * reading this thread who'd think it's not a red flag to work on things outside the core game, it's going so well. Yeah though, you couldn't see it coming right?
Why did they waste their time with the 18 men's teams? They should've had 2 at max so they could focus on the core gameplay.

I think the gameplay is now the best it's ever been. I'll need to test out playing against the AI a bit more but against another person it's a lot of fun, even if there are still some small issues here and there.

Management on the other hand still has way too many glaring issues. I simmed through a season in a new save with Gold Coast to see what's changed in the last patch and ran into some of the major issues which have been around for a while now as well as some new ones.

  • Player stats don't make a whole lot of sense still. Daniher won the coleman which is fine but the other top goalkickers were midfielders.
  • AA team is no longer just the highest rated players but the selections now seem very random. Levi Casboult made it with 12 goals in 18 games while the coleman medallist missed out (also it's only 18 players rather than 22).
  • Delistings after the trade period are still totally broken. Josh Dunkley, Josh Daicos, Tom Green, Hayden Young, Sam De Koning all delisted plus plenty of other good players who would never be delisted in real life (also Gryan Miers who made the AA team).
  • The really good delisted players don't appear or get picked in the national or rookie drafts and start season 2 playing in the state leagues. Saw some players who retired like Seedsman and Docherty in the VFL at the start of season 2 as well.
  • You can't see the height of draftees at the draft aside from the three suggested players. Heights also don't make much sense, like 186cm rucks.
  • The highest overall/potential draftees don't get taken at the start of the draft. In mine they were taken at picks 9, 16 and 26. And for some reason (I assume because teams delist so many players) the national draft was 166 picks and the rookie draft was 60 picks

And that's just the main issues I noticed. Hopefully this stuff gets fixed because some of it completely wrecks management mode.
Are most draftees still darker skinned players with blonde or red hair or was that just a WW thing?

OK after my first session in a month I’m happy to say this game plays the best it ever has 🥳 there’s still a few lingering issues but I actually enjoyed the 2 games I’ve played and some of the more annoying bugs like stuck in the mud and teleport tackling seemed to have been dialled back thankfully! Hopefully Big Ant can continue to build off this! 🤞🏽

On the afl23 subreddit there’s a fantastic comment with 5 clips from the recent patch outlining the game breaking bugs and broken mechanics on the lastest post.
The patch hasn’t addressed the long sought after fixes to make this is a playable game, long way to go.
The post also lists a number of improvements he found in the patch... let's not leave those out of the discussion....

No, not everything is fixed... but this patch is a big step forward.

Well the state of management mode sounds garbage. Why did they even bother with management mode, if that’s what they’re going to produce.

‘Our game will be the greatest because we have passion for AFL!’

Goes on to produce AA team with 18 players, excluding the Coleman medalist rather for a guy who kicked 12 goals, and delist an all Australian, while producing a mockery of the national draft.

Don't hold your breath. Been in that state on steam for 3 weeks

Stupid question.

How do we edit real players stats in academy?
And can I delist Jason Castagna?

Edit: found it!

Really good update overall!
Fixed a lot of the bugs that bothered me in the past, so well done for that..
Happy with the gameplay adjustments. I think now you can say it's not the disaster people are claiming it is, as of now anyway.

Only thing now is i feel that the AI tackling is too quick again, lol. It's really hard to find any space.

Only thing that bothers me now:

  • Tackling seems too efficient from the AI, it's hard to get any run.
  • Players run too fast in the F50 when lining up for goal, like they are in fast forward. Sometimes. Not too often.
  • Goal Umpires still slide instead of walk. It'd be good to seem em' walking.
  • I still think some more fine-tuning of gameplay wouldn't hurt..
Overall, it's hard to grumble, but it took a while to get here.

My Steam refund request was rejected. Anyone able to share their ticket number for a successful request to make my life easier?
Just mention the complete lack of Hamish. That should sort ya.

First few games post the new ps patch:

  • Weather is actually working in season mode now
  • The ‘stuck in the mud’ issue seems to be gone
  • Handballing is much more smooth and accurate
  • Kicking for goal on the run is much more responsive and there’s no need for a button double press

From a purely gameplay pov, this is now a very good footy game

As a word of warning - a lot of us steam users thought the same early, just because it was such a big step up from the previous patch. But give it a few more games and see how you feel. Still enough bugs and every game/team plays the same way. AI needs to use tactics, and generally be smarter, and just overall starts to feel pretty shonky and repetitive after a while. Not to mention that beyond gameplay, the game is still completely broken.

This forum is a revolving door of overly optimistic reviews when a new patch comes out, almost to the point of trying to convince themselves more than anything.

Then, slowly, as the days grow into weeks for a new patch, they come to the realisation that the game is actually still horrific and lacking core feature's and game modes.

Which then leads into the posts complaining about the state of game and big ants lack of communication (rightly so) and demanding a new patch that will finally deliver the AFL games we all dreamed about after Live 1.

And then once the new patch improving "stability" comes, repeat the above

I think that's a legacy from the daily patches. I was one who was optimistic when they were happening, as even though bugs remained you knew improvements were coming. But bit different after waiting 3 weeks for a patch....

Fair enough. Haven’t been holding my breath at all but I will say this is the best the game has played on PS5 since….ever? 🤣 mind you I’m not someone who’ll sit and play for hours so the 2 games I had today did enough to raise my opinion on the game slightly. Hope there’s more to come.

It's honestly going to need 1 or 2 more years of development, that game is clearly unfinished.

Agreed, although I don't see that happening unfortunately. I would imagine a sequel would also be unlikely given this debacle.

I also think comparably speaking, for all their faults, at least Wicked Witch provided a completed game in Evo 2. Granted graphics and animations weren't great, but at least it was complete and playable, and we saw improvements from game to game.
I honestly think we would have been better off getting evo 3 than afl 23.
