WHEN CAN I PLAY? READ BELOW:
  • PlayStation (Physical): Thursday 4 May
  • PlayStation (Digital): 8:01am AEST Thursday 4 May
  • Steam: Currently 8:01am AEST Thursday 4 May, may be moved to 12:01am AEST
  • Xbox (Digital or Physical): TO BE CONFIRMED, unlikely to be 4 May

Those that pre-ordered PS versions will be able to play on Thursday, disks will have already been mailed by retailers, they will also be available in-store.

Steam will also be available Thursday.

Stating the obvious, we are still having issues with XBox.

Seriously, anyone that looks hard knows there’s issues - why do you think there are so many exclusives for a particular platform that are not marked as exclusive, but are only on that platform.

If I took that road, life would have been a lot easier.

Xbox digital and retail will release at the same time - that is not a decision we get to make.

It applies now and I will no doubt pay a price.

Re: commentary team
Hamish is still there, Daisy didn't make it into the final version of the game.

We added Gary and increased the workload of Harf.

Re: game availability/release dates
I can never give 100% guarantee about anything in the future, but as it stands today, the statement I am prepared to make it that all stock that is at retailers on 4 May will be available for sale.

As to the amount that will be there for sale, and whether it is enough, that is a question I cannot answer.

It will be made digitally available on the various platform holder electronic stores.

Clarifying, the game will not release prior to 4 May 2023.

I am vague as there is one platform that has had sufficient stock at retailers and the other has not, and I cannot name them (contractual reasons).

The game will not be further delayed because of the numbers of units in stock.

Re: Steam listing
I've already put in a request for the screenshots to be replaced with current ones, they'll probably only be there for a day.

As much as the feedback has generally been positive, these are old, meant to be placeholder only and were not meant to go live.

Re: playing lists
All playing lists are accurate for the 2023 season.

Re: content creator footage
This is all prior to day one patch (as some have noted updates like numbers etc are apparent)

Re: Career mode
A head's up on Career mode.

At the AFL 23 Launch night I mentioned the non-team based Individual Career Mode in an interview with Dean (Twistie3). As alluded to at that same event, we were working with the AFL and AFLPA to include as many past legends in the game as possible.

The great news is that we have received approval for far more AFL legends than were previously envisaged, but this has meant that we had to make the tough decision to divert resources away from the Individual Career mode development. The individual Career Mode function will not make it into AFL 23, Career Mode will be entirely team based. I expect this mode to be include in future iterations of the game.

Re: microtransactions
You do not have to make purchases, things can be earned.

Re: general development
So fundamentally flawed, in so many ways, it’s bananas.

We are doing AFL as it’s a passion project, without us doing it there would not be one being made.

So much more upside with making games that are played internationally, let alone one that will not even be played in every state in this country.

Big Ant’s handling of marketing and the lack of transparency throughout the entire period of pre-ordering until now has been a farce.

The very fact that just over 24 hours out from release there is more attention on frustration and disappointment instead of the game itself is proof of this.

I can’t imagine that they have done their relationship with the AFL any favors in this process.
They just got the licence back and more support then ever before from the afl.
The person in the afl that deals with bigant would be thinking wtf is going on

It’s such a shame because I see so much potential in this AFL23 release. It has the opportunity to be the start of a revolutionary time for AFL gaming. Big Ant seem to have done a really solid foundation for future releases of this franchise.

The lack of marketing and transparency is jeopardizing their chance at being the ones to deliver that and I genuinely hope that it doesn’t.

Sorry for hating on big ant tonight but have they even made a official statement on twitter or fb. Not everyone is on bigfooty

As someone who is media accredited with the AFL I can tell you there has been a grand total of 2 official media releases from the AFL regarding AFL 23. The first was for the media opportunity on March 22nd and the second was for the announcement of the cover stars the following day. No media release was ever sent from the AFL regarding the game's initial announcement nor for the game delay.

That’s all well and good, but the product itself has the AFL’s logo all over it, so I would imagine they would care quite a bit about the product and how it is handled.

Exactly that's my point, the fact that they have only sent 2 official media releases and nothing in the last month is mind-boggling considering the various issues that have arisen of late.

Nothing. Complete silence from them. Too busy showing photos of his trip to India.

Oh true.
Im sure the afl will suck the game out dry if it becomes successful cause of the money.
A successful game could lead to international interest or be that final leap to be on top of the nrl for good

Has it been confirmed whether it’s shipping , manufacturing or are they having trouble getting QA standards met for Microsoft like they did with cricket 22?

Mid to late June is 8 or more weeks of over the original release date and if they knew they had issues around 2 weeks prior to the original release date makes it 2 and a half months.

I think it's important to read the pinned post by Dannnnnnnnnn before jumping to any conclusions or if you have any questions, especially new members. It gives better context and makes two important points. There are aspects out of BA/Ross's control because of contractual agreements. So Big Ant might have done all the right things to get the game out on time, but are bound by agreements. They might want to come here to post everything they can about the game but might not be allowed to. In regards the Xbox delay, again, it might very well have been out of their control, just really unlucky. I'd be certain it was the last thing they wanted.

In terms of knocking the game before playing it, for those who can play it, give it a go first, before having any opinion, give it some time like you would any sports game.

Also, as was mentioned, there is no other company/license that can make an AFL game right now like BA can. So remember, if you cancel your orders etc, well, what's the alternative?? No one else in this country has the environment and resources that BA have to do it, as well as passion for the game.

Be mad if you want, but i think the lost art of patience and zen thinking, might just be in order here. Wait and see, don't panic, things might be on the up sooner than later either way.
