WHEN CAN I PLAY? READ BELOW:
  • PlayStation (Physical): Thursday 4 May
  • PlayStation (Digital): 8:01am AEST Thursday 4 May
  • Steam: Currently 8:01am AEST Thursday 4 May, may be moved to 12:01am AEST
  • Xbox (Digital or Physical): TO BE CONFIRMED, unlikely to be 4 May

Those that pre-ordered PS versions will be able to play on Thursday, disks will have already been mailed by retailers, they will also be available in-store.

Steam will also be available Thursday.

Stating the obvious, we are still having issues with XBox.

Seriously, anyone that looks hard knows there’s issues - why do you think there are so many exclusives for a particular platform that are not marked as exclusive, but are only on that platform.

If I took that road, life would have been a lot easier.

Xbox digital and retail will release at the same time - that is not a decision we get to make.

It applies now and I will no doubt pay a price.

Re: commentary team
Hamish is still there, Daisy didn't make it into the final version of the game.

We added Gary and increased the workload of Harf.

Re: game availability/release dates
I can never give 100% guarantee about anything in the future, but as it stands today, the statement I am prepared to make it that all stock that is at retailers on 4 May will be available for sale.

As to the amount that will be there for sale, and whether it is enough, that is a question I cannot answer.

It will be made digitally available on the various platform holder electronic stores.

Clarifying, the game will not release prior to 4 May 2023.

I am vague as there is one platform that has had sufficient stock at retailers and the other has not, and I cannot name them (contractual reasons).

The game will not be further delayed because of the numbers of units in stock.

Re: Steam listing
I've already put in a request for the screenshots to be replaced with current ones, they'll probably only be there for a day.

As much as the feedback has generally been positive, these are old, meant to be placeholder only and were not meant to go live.

Re: playing lists
All playing lists are accurate for the 2023 season.

Re: content creator footage
This is all prior to day one patch (as some have noted updates like numbers etc are apparent)

Re: Career mode
A head's up on Career mode.

At the AFL 23 Launch night I mentioned the non-team based Individual Career Mode in an interview with Dean (Twistie3). As alluded to at that same event, we were working with the AFL and AFLPA to include as many past legends in the game as possible.

The great news is that we have received approval for far more AFL legends than were previously envisaged, but this has meant that we had to make the tough decision to divert resources away from the Individual Career mode development. The individual Career Mode function will not make it into AFL 23, Career Mode will be entirely team based. I expect this mode to be include in future iterations of the game.

Re: microtransactions
You do not have to make purchases, things can be earned.

Re: general development
So fundamentally flawed, in so many ways, it’s bananas.

We are doing AFL as it’s a passion project, without us doing it there would not be one being made.

So much more upside with making games that are played internationally, let alone one that will not even be played in every state in this country.

I have asked tech, the initial response was they believe it's supported, will respond when I hear back to confirm.

Edit: Just crossed over Alice Springs... soooo loooonngggg - not sure how I survived without in-air internet.
The extra resolution will definitely help players, since footy ovals are so wide.

Tbh I would rather hear some commentary than see some gameplay. Really hope the commentary doesn't ruin the game like AFL evo 2 even though the game was game in itself.

BigAntStudios I try not to look into any of the screenshots too much, I noticed you've added the security guards around the boundary line. Any future idea of adding the kid behind the goal with the bag of new balls once a behind is kicked? even a cut scene grabbing the ball out of the bag walking back to the goal square.
People are just asking to watch TV with an Xbox controller in their hands at this point

the amount of people who have never played big ant games here and don't know how the academy works is staggering

AFL Live was 12 years ago
Not every footy fan likes cricket or the other games they've made.

Not really that staggering I would have thought?

What?

How does insinuate that? It merely asks what player would you add?

It has to be pack based or it doesn't work.
'Adding' players to a team doesn't give me pack vibes if I'm honest, but that may just be me.

Could be the AFL social media people simply don't know how the game mode functions, and have gone with as neutral of a description as possible.

it's reasonable to assume that player data will be updated frequently throughout the season, given that it is powered by Champion Data. It would be good to see whether team tactics will be updated as well.

Teams often make tactical shifts, which can dramatically affect their performance. For example, Geelong whom I follow switched to a more daring and fast-paced style of football during the 2022 season, which impacted how they performed.

It would be interesting to see if real-life tactical changes are reflected in the game, particularly for players who enjoy the management mode and a full season. Imagine playing against a team that you easily beat early in the season, In real life the team changes their tactics and that is reflected in-game which makes them more of a formidable opponent which also might make you change the way you play. It would certainly add an extra layer of depth and realism to the game.

Face this dilema, I'm old, I love physical - but also I hate changing the disk.

I've got so many games still in shrink-wrap that if I had digital I would have no doubt played - all the way back to the original Red Dead.

I've had the Series X for almost a year and the PS5 about 8ish months. I've only inserted 1 disc in the Xbox and that was to just test the 4K playback with The Dark Knight.

All game purchases have been digital I do have a mini XB1 and PS4 physical collection. Kinda got scared off from physical when my R6 Siege disc got stuck in the console (hate auto slot loaders!!).

The fair brunt of my digital ps5/xbsx purchases were either heavily discounted OR purchased using discounted digital credit.

I'm also lazy and detested changing game discs regularly. Even in the 360/ps3 days I'd start off physical, but end up double dipping with the digital version of some games (Dark Souls, MK, Street Fighter etc).

I went physical with AFL LIVE on both 360 and ps3, digital with pc.

With Evo 1 and 2 it was digital all the way.

I don't know if the PS5 has the same feature but I love the series x where I could be playing basketball and I am halfway through it and my almost 1 year old son wakes up etc and If I have to sort him out I could turn the Xbox off and come back to it via quick resume, same as any of the other sporting games like Madden or WWE it is great. To be able to jump from game to game without having to save or get up and worry about discs in and out is a benefit to.

Xbox controllers undoubtedly have a better hand feel. Feels way more natural. Assuming everyone in this thread is a rational human, they’d obviously only use Xbox controllers!
Nacon controllers are the best! :p
