WHEN CAN I PLAY? READ BELOW:
  • PlayStation (Physical): Thursday 4 May
  • PlayStation (Digital): 8:01am AEST Thursday 4 May
  • Steam: Currently 8:01am AEST Thursday 4 May, may be moved to 12:01am AEST
  • Xbox (Digital or Physical): TO BE CONFIRMED, unlikely to be 4 May

Those that pre-ordered PS versions will be able to play on Thursday, disks will have already been mailed by retailers, they will also be available in-store.

Steam will also be available Thursday.

Stating the obvious, we are still having issues with XBox.

Seriously, anyone that looks hard knows there’s issues - why do you think there are so many exclusives for a particular platform that are not marked as exclusive, but are only on that platform.

If I took that road, life would have been a lot easier.

Xbox digital and retail will release at the same time - that is not a decision we get to make.

It applies now and I will no doubt pay a price.

Re: commentary team
Hamish is still there, Daisy didn't make it into the final version of the game.

We added Gary and increased the workload of Harf.

Re: game availability/release dates
I can never give 100% guarantee about anything in the future, but as it stands today, the statement I am prepared to make it that all stock that is at retailers on 4 May will be available for sale.

As to the amount that will be there for sale, and whether it is enough, that is a question I cannot answer.

It will be made digitally available on the various platform holder electronic stores.

Clarifying, the game will not release prior to 4 May 2023.

I am vague as there is one platform that has had sufficient stock at retailers and the other has not, and I cannot name them (contractual reasons).

The game will not be further delayed because of the numbers of units in stock.

Re: Steam listing
I've already put in a request for the screenshots to be replaced with current ones, they'll probably only be there for a day.

As much as the feedback has generally been positive, these are old, meant to be placeholder only and were not meant to go live.

Re: playing lists
All playing lists are accurate for the 2023 season.

Re: content creator footage
This is all prior to day one patch (as some have noted updates like numbers etc are apparent)

Re: Career mode
A head's up on Career mode.

At the AFL 23 Launch night I mentioned the non-team based Individual Career Mode in an interview with Dean (Twistie3). As alluded to at that same event, we were working with the AFL and AFLPA to include as many past legends in the game as possible.

The great news is that we have received approval for far more AFL legends than were previously envisaged, but this has meant that we had to make the tough decision to divert resources away from the Individual Career mode development. The individual Career Mode function will not make it into AFL 23, Career Mode will be entirely team based. I expect this mode to be include in future iterations of the game.

Re: microtransactions
You do not have to make purchases, things can be earned.

Re: general development
So fundamentally flawed, in so many ways, it’s bananas.

We are doing AFL as it’s a passion project, without us doing it there would not be one being made.

So much more upside with making games that are played internationally, let alone one that will not even be played in every state in this country.

Because I've been fascinated at the dearth of footage and wanted to see the end result?

The irony of you finding it a good use of time to comment is not lost on me 😂
A day or two after stuff comes out you might be able to slide it by as a passing interest.

Consuming streamer footage content about 10 mins after it’s released is jarring on that illusion of you telling us about how you aren’t buying it.

I'm on my phone way too much and I get notifications, it's really no deeper than that.

The others were right though, this thread does love a conspiracy theory 😅

I have a question for everyone planning to play Pro Team mode when the game’s out:

How much $ would you spend on a pack that contained your all time favourite club legend? If the option is there to just buy instead of grind, what would you expect to pay? If I personally could get Dane Swan or Alan Didak instantly for say $6-$10 I probably would really consider it.
I'd consider paying a few $ for Ablett Snr but probably not anyone else

100% agree re: Madden. I guess thats a downside to yearly iterations. You hear a lot about "legacy code" when it comes to Madden, im no developer so i dont know if thats a real thing or not.
They cant afford to take a year off (or two) to start over. The last time a lot of sports games did that at the beginning of the 360/ps3 gen, was arguably when most of them lost many of those quality in depth features of the ps2 era and we never got them back.
Certainly. And what I'd like to add, hopefully Big Ant can take a look at the 2000's American Football titles from 2K, which had the best tackles, collisions, evasions and manoeuvres from any football code video game. Madden never came close to 2K's 2000's American Football games in terms of on-field play.

FearTheBeard13 actually raises a great question. How much money are we willing to spend on in game purchases to help the Pro Team along after already dropping $79-99 on the game itself.

Personally wouldn’t mind a subscription model (crazy I know) where you pay say, $5 a month to get a box of packs every month. Could be a way to lock people in to monthly payments for a discount on packs?

To be honest, I’ll probably do what I do in FIFA and drop $25-$35 on packs on release day to build some kind of team and then spontaneous purchases from there.

Possibly more spontaneous purchases here as I have way more vested interest in AFL.

For a subscription based set up you would need daily tasks ect against the AI, a lot of stuff would need to be against the AI as this game won't generate the player base of other sport titles. Interesting conversation though.

Personally I would take gameplay mechanic additions and improvements over paying playable past players, if I had to pay microtransactions. I don't know if Big Ant are going to add in those things later into AFL 23, they definitely need to improve the contested play mechanics.

Only thing I'd do at this point is tinker with the camera view/angle. I'm fine with the spider-cam distance, if I could tinker with the angle of it slightly it'd be good. I'm a bit fussy these days, used to leave things on default values.... but I change the default camera in everything from NBA 2K, to Madden, to Fifa that suits my liking.

** Also while I think the legends concept is good. I'm a bit "microtransactioned" out, I only ever really played that kind of mode in Fifa (09 and 17 mostly). I've stayed away from the Madden, NBA 2K (and recently WWE 2K) versions.

For anyone who bought Big Ant's Cricket or Rugby League Live games at release, did Big Ant add in additional gameplay mechanics later on via patches, ie new motion capture, player movement, player abilities, etc?

95% of this thread is a nightmare, I can’t wait for this game and can only manage to check this thread about once per day.

Best part about not buying this game for me would be not following this thread. Having notifications on this thread is insane

Only fault i can make out of the vision so far is the ball seems to hang in the air for way to long, flat footed players when going for mark and clunky movement when players are picking up the ball (almost like they stop, then get going).

Apart from that i cant wait for the 4th!

You and me both.

From memory they added new styles of bowling action and tweaked certain shot animations

Cricket 22 was buggy as all hell at release and I'd almost be amazed if AFL23 wasn't the same. It got better gradually after a few months. That's why I've maintained the view that this game was nowhere near polished enough for release at the original date.

why do people keep saying this like they've never seen a slightly bellicose BigFooty thread before? Do I need to remind you that you're on the internet?

We haven’t seen many features of the game yet.

Surprised the content shared hasn’t been from the release build. We’ve seen gameplay from an older build, a few basic menus, incomplete career mode. And this is five days out after a 3 week delay. Would be nice to have seen something that is actually current by now. Nor have we seen good players showcase the gameplay anywhere near its best.

Eh, I think the fact I'm not buying the game has made me far less sensitive to the amount of nothing posts on here?

Doesn't take long to skim.

The difference is this thread has the CEO of a game I really care about. The wild negative of wading through this thread is offset by my want to get info from bigant.

Other threads I can tune out as I need to, but this one is different.

Anyway, I’m contributing to the rubbish I’m complaining about so I’ll shut up from here.

I wonder if they motion captured someone kicking the ball over 60 metres, so when the in-game player kicks it that far, the animation is just like someone who would kick it that distance. Usually they fly into the air a bit when they kick that far.
