AFL Cairns - 2012 Season

Went to the game yesterday and the result was unfortunate for AFL Cairns, a good crowd saw one way traffic after 5 minutes. Richter was great, unfortunately he is often a one man band with other players drifting in and out of the game.

Souths struggled to keep the leg ticking over, short break was never going to do them any favours.

Easter Monday footy, Wednesday ANZAC day footy, what is next???

Interesting result with Port losing to Centrals, sees them join the mix as fighting for 4th spot behind Saints, Norths and Hawks.

Hawks improving every week, seem to be building up a head of steam to challenge the top 2. I'd say it's a three horse race at the moment. Hawks still have the coach to come in.

Time to start thinking about Rep Footy, who would be the nominations so far?

Saints: Gill, Walsh, Macqueen, Allen, Harkin, Powell, Ferrier
Norths: Tennick, Richter, Liddy, Clough
Hawks: Powell, Alick, Bradbury
Port: Gribbon, Bradshaw
Souths: Gascoyne, English
Lions: Lewis, (and the big ruckman)
Dogs: Cunningham, Matthews

Who else should be added to the list? You need about 40 before eliminating those that will be unavailable. So about 7-8 from the top sides, 3 or 4 from the bottom sides.

Not many defenders there, who would be the best defenders in the comp to add to the list?

If people haven't learnt from Port Douglas' mistakes then they never will.

You can always win every game of the year and lose a GF Sweet Undies ;)

Spot on Tommy. Apart from Hawks last year the best team over the season hasn't won the GF for some time. Even Hawks last year had some issues late in the season.. Hawks ressies won the flag last year after getting toweled up by by Saints and Port all season. Anything can happen on the day and through out the season, injuries, new players players coming back from injury. Lets wait and see hey.

Does yesterdays result make what everyone thought a sure thing, that unless Hawks improving that its really a 2 horse race. I know its early but i doubt Saints or Norths will lose to anyone except for each other.Like we always say anything can happen in september which is true but Saints and Norths will finish 1-2 with Hawks Port and maybe Souths fighting for the other 2 spots. Cities have improved but wont in many games and CTB have gone backwards from last year. But who knows, a team could pick up 6 or 7 Darwin recruits or from somewhere else and all of a sudden be a contender.

Have to agree with you Lachrilly, although Port needs to find consistency as does Souths. Maybe Centrals can do what they did last year and find half a team from South Australia in the last half of the season.

As I'll be in Melbourne for the rest of the week here's my tips -

Norths to comfortably beat Hawks
Saints to flog Centrals
Port over the Lions but I think the Lions might Roar against the Crocs

After 4 rounds the Cairns site tippers ladder looks like this

Saint 11
Lachrilly 7
Tamba 7
Dr R Kimble 6
Waton 6
Sweet Undies 4
Flintstone 4
Dontargue 3.5 he tipped a draw
Dick Pepper 3
Tommy Gun 3
Collo 3
Happy Feet 2

if you don't tip ya get nothing ;)

After 5 Rounds

Saint 13
Lachrilly 9
Tamba 8
Waton 8
Dr R Kimble 7
Sweet Undies 6
Dontargue 5.5 he tipped a draw
Flintstone 5
Tommy Gun 5
Collo 5
Dick Pepper 3
Happy Feet 2

Two pretty interesting games this week.

Lions v Port at Lions.

I think everyone gets the feeling the Lions are on the cusp of their first victory and Port are terribly out of form losing a big lead at Trinity. That's the lot of younger players, if they're not on song, the Lions could sneak away with a victory. If I had to bet, I'd bet on Port, but since I'm just tipping and I've got a 4 point lead, I'll tip the Lions to break their duck and stick Port's season into a hole. Port ressies to win.

Norths v Hawks

Match of the round. If Norths win, you'd think it would be tough for Hawks to make the top 2, so if Hawks are going to bring in new players, now would be the time. Martin back from injury, Alick in form and Powell leading the way. If the coach is back on the park, that's a bonus. While I hope it's a close game, and Hawks have all those possibilities, Norths have been consistently good all year and I think they'll win this one by 5 or 6 goals. Norths ressies to win by 10 goals.

Saints v Centrals

With the 20 year reunion having over 200 booked for Saturday night's function, the crowd at Griffiths is going to be fairly large. Saints have had the week off so should be fit. Plenty of guys challenging for spots, back from injury are after coming in through the 2nds. Centrals have had a morale boosting win, coming from behind. I think they'll be brought down to earth with a thud this week. Saints by 30 goals in front of a strong home crowd. The reserves will be another shame for Centrals.

A couple of games this week which could be quite telling for the season.

Does anyone know why round 7 and 8 appear to be around the wrong way? (Hawks v Saints again when Saints haven't played Souths yet?)

Port by 6 goals Ressies by 150pts
Norths by 10 goals in each grade
Saints by 120 in each grade

Should be one of the biggest crowds seen at Griffiths in a long time this saturday. Hope that all past and present Saints can get there as it should be a massive day. Of course anyone outside the club is welcome to come along and witness what all hope will be a great day

Saints by 200, Trinity to score under 4 goals. Trinity reserves won't have enough for a team.
Port to beat Lions by 8 goals in the ones, and by 20 goals in the 2nds.
Norths by 10 goals in the ones, and by 20 goals in the reserves.

Our league and great game has a problem up here, apart from Tamba picking the Hawks (bit odd) we have a very divisional competition. I hope that an upset occurs...

I will tip some goal kickers

Walsh could kick 20, it will depend who Cunningham plays on (Gill, Walsh, Braybon).
Liddy will be kept quiet this week against a tight Manunda back half, might bag 4.
Gill or MacQueen may even get to the magical double figures for the game.
Skip Gibbon (if it is dry) could even kick a bag and take 5 hangers.

I tipped Lions to beat Port. Still standing by that.

Hard to pick who'll kick all the goals for Saints.

Big Zac White into the side after a double figure bag against Lions ressies is a dark horse, if Walshy will allow him into the forward 50.

Macqueen will have a picnic at the feet of all these marking forwards, though Ricky Allan has bagged a few buzzing around the feet also.

Those little guys might be starved of opportunities if the weather's good and the big boys don't drop any.

Z White, Zac Kelly, Adam Couch and Ben Hallas all into the side this week, all but Couch having their first seniors games of the year. 3 excellent beards running around should be the highlight, particularly for the reunion guys celebrating their own beards from back in the day.

Any club playing Saints this Saturday would not be happy about it
the noise from the bar will be unbearable, hope the men in orange don't get off side with the crowd.

Enjoy the Day, Saints, Lacrilly and all closet Saint supporters :D

No upsets yesterday, all went as expected. Hawks, not looking likely to challenge for two in a row. Lions, same old same old. Centrals, worst they have been in many years. Port, beat witches hats after struggling this season.

North Cairns at their best will give Saints a shake.....for about 5 minutes then Saints will go on to belt them like they'll belt every other side this season.

Nice win by the Tigers on the weekend in a fairly fiery clash. What is with all these players swapping between the teams? Just looked at the clearances, at least 6 players have swapped. Also noticed Scrimma has returned to Cairns, pencil the hawks in for 3rd place at least with him returning and the possibility of a few more.

Saints won't lose a game all year, they have so much quality and depth, I think the premiership is theirs to lose. Matt Walsh could kick 150 goals if he stays fit. With senior players still to return, Saints reserves will also be very hard to beat come September.

Port bounced back nicely on the weekend, but only thanks to Brad Cooper pulling the jumper on again. True sign of leadership - when the chips are down, lead the way. Could have backfired on him if he didn't get a kick but it has paid off.

A lot of player movement at Souths as well with boys returning home. What happened Tamba or Flinstone? Work, enjoyment, homesick, asked to leave...

Fabulous weekend had by all Saints on the weekend. Everybody had a great time, though I'm sure the real winner will be liver transplant companies in the years to come.

Saints accounted for CTB in an unattractive game. Walsh bagged 8, Macqueen had a quiet day while little Ricky Allan has taken over the mantle of goal-sneak with another 5.

Norths didn't have too much trouble with the Hawks on the weekend, controlling the Hawks midfield which is their engine-room. Without that the Hawks didn't offer much resistance. 4 goals in the final term to Hawks saved it from crossing into triple figures.

Port had Cooper up front to bag 7 and easily defeat Lions who will record a victory this year, it's just a matter of when and against whom. Port look to be good against the lower teams but struggle for consistent 4 qtr football against the top teams.

In the reserves, Hawks scored just the solitary point. We're definitely in a three horse race there between Port, Saints and Norths who all had 20+ wins. Hawks came from a fair way back last year against Port and Saints, but scoring one point means they're a long way off.

Rex Liddy would be a dark-horse to sneak up the goalkicking ladder for at least a 2nd place. When he plays, he kicks goals.

The Rumour mill is going strong that some of Souths' recruits have headed home and Hawks have still got a Darwin connection on the way, though it was hard to get much out of Coach Gribble as he was pinned to the ground beneath 4 security guards Sunday night at the Pier.
