Just saw the cairns post team of the year:

Full Forward
M Walsh (Saints) - he kicked nearly 100 goals more than anyone else this season. Nuff said

Forward Pocket
A Macqueen (Saints) - always a fan of how he pops up at the right time and he did plenty of that on Saturday

Forward Pocket
A Gross (Lions) - can kick a freakish goal and take a big mark

Half forward
C Gribble (Hawks) - kamikaze-like and a good leader

Centre-half forward
S Knott (Tigers) - stand-out debut season, big engine, good hands and skills

Half-forward
A Boone (Crocs) - ultimate leader at the Crocs this year and can play anywhere

Centre line
C Guy (Centrals) - a star in a team that improved dramatically this season, was always among the side's best
B Powell (Saints) - won the Crathern Medal last year but probably played better this season. Small in stature but fearless
W English (Cutters) - club favourite, modest but matches it with the best in the competition

Halfback
D Wearmouth (Crocs) - skin and bones but goes in hard and was very consistent
A Mueller (Tigers) - oozes class and you can tell he's played a lot of footy at a higher level
D Roe (Lions) - big and strong and confident, a bit of a rock for the Lions this season

Fullback
D Mills (Tigers) - dependable at the back and able to man mark Walsh like not other this season

Back Pocket
D Dewis (Cutters) - a welcome return to Fretwell Park this year for the young gun
M Exton (Tigers) - underrated but not by his teammates, can pin his ears back and go

Followers
D Liriges (Saints) - a tough nut who keeps warming to the rucking role, great in the final
J Dixon (Saints) - big and strong and fair and now a premiership-winning captain
L Ehlich (Tigers) - a polarising character by choice, was representative player of the year

Bench
I Rokeby (Tigers) - can sniff out a goal and is the perfect impact player who impressed in NEAFL for Suns, too
M Harbrow (Lions) - showed youngsters how it was done
D Lock (Cutters) - slot him into the defensive structure and you know he'll do the job
R Couch (Saints) - unsung hero of the Saints defence, was immense in the decider

Coach
K Richter (Tigers) - would probably make the team but keen to see how his good footy brain operates without having to play as well as coach

It looks pretty good to be honest. Gribble in though is a massive shock. He must play well against other teams cause against Saints he has been terrible. I heard the same about the NEAFL team and Cairns won't get another chance to apply till the 2016 season

High hopes for proposed Cairns team in revamped North Eastern AFL
Backers of a North Eastern AFL team for the region are hopeful it gets the all clear today to compete in next year's tournament.
The Cairns Post understands a decision will be made today on whether the North Queensland side, mostly based in Cairns but also representing Mackay, Rockhampton and Townsville will be formed.
The AFL's North Queensland development manager Craig Starcevich is confident the costs of the team's introduction will be justified by AFL headquarters.
"We've been wanting to get in front of the AFL for a while but they've had a few distractions," he said, referring to the Essendon drugs saga.
"It's a question of money, but certainly everyone agrees with the concept."
"I'd be disappointed if we didn't get the good news."
The side would compete in the revamped NEAFL, which includes teams as far south as Canberra and west as Darwin and runs one tier below the AFL.
A majority of home games would be played at Cazalys, with AFL Cairns team Manunda Hawks in line to share the facility with the North Queensland side in the initial stages.
"It's hugely exciting for all the cities in the region," Starcevich, an AFL premiership winner with Collingwood in 1990, said.
"The local AFL final on the weekend was fantastic , but you just think 'what's next'."
"There are 33 players from North Queensland already playing in the NEAFL and they are all asking about it. Then you have the teenagers already up here that wouldn't have to move south."
Starcevich took up his new role 18 months ago after working as an AFL talent manager in Western Australia. After finishing a 144-game AFL career at the Brisbane Bears, Starcevich worked as a high performance manager at the club, then had a brief stint at St Kilda before joining A-League side Brisbane Roar as strength and conditioning coach and finally working as the AFL's talent manager in Western Australia.

I read the below article in the Herald Sun yesterday. Spoke to a few people involved in the NEAFL league it sounds like AFL Cairns and AFLQ could not agree on anything. Cairns wants a side, AFLQ wants a North Queensland side. Cairns have the money and didn't want to spend it on the other 3 North Queensland leagues (Mackay, Townsville and Capricornia). Are AFL Cairns being greedy or is there more to it?
If AFL Cairns got the side, wouldn't it be great if the senior side played NEAFL and the reserves side made it team number 8 in the local AFL Cairns comp. The 8th reserve side could be made up by the growing Pyramid Power club.
Until the league moves with the times, it will be stagnated. Why wouldn't they play Under 14 and Under 16 on Saturday morning. Obviously it will be hard with a stand alone junior club like Pyramid (possible 2 with the Cape York House starting a team?) but it creates a better atmosphere and juniors become aligned to a club and cultures are built.
Well done also to my old club the Cairns Saints on the Grand Final victory. Watched it live online (thanks AFL Cairns), Norths did lose it through poor discipline, but Saints won it through guts and sticking to a game plan.

AFL Queensland has postponed plans to introduce a north Queensland side into the NEAFL in 2014.

A Cairns-based side remains a priority for AFLQ, but CEO Michael Conlan said the timing was not right.
“We have just announced major changes to the NEAFL and South East Queensland leagues, and our focus is on ensuring their success,” Conlan said.
“While we believe in the long-term viability of a north Queensland side, our first priority is ensuring that our existing NEAFL teams will be competitive in the new competition.”
The new-look NEAFL features a range of structural and organisational changes as part of the NEAFL’s long-term focus on increased competition standard and enhanced talent pathways.
As a result of these changes, the NEAFL competition will comprise 14 clubs; four from the ACT: Ainslie, Belconnen, Eastlake, Queanbeyan; two from NSW: Hills Eagles, Sydney University; three from South East Queensland: Aspley, Redland, Southport; one from the Northern Territory: NT Thunder; four AFL Reserves teams: Sydney Swans, GWS Giants, Brisbane Lions and the Gold Coast Suns.

Hi guys. Following your Cairns league with a lot of interest. Sorry to hear that there is no NEAFL team for 2014. Any news from up that way on coaching changes for next year etc.

Brenton Powell won the Saints B&F in his final year at the club with Rohan Couch runner up. Dan Whatley won the reserves from Normy Hogan. Apparently a big coach will be leading the way at Saints next year.

News coming out of Griffith Park that the Phillpot brothers arent happy with what Saints have put on the table for season 2014. Have been linked with a possible move down the highway to South Cairns cutters with performance based incentives along with solid match payments.
When nothing is on the table then i take it that anybody would be unhappy. No doubt Saints will table something huge up for the boys cause they are very valuable members of the club

Former coach Jason Roe signed at Centrals to form handy coaching partnership down the road, will be interesting to see how that works out, wish him all the best. Couple of handy signings looking good already for us but after having D Lewis sign then leave last year its a bit early to name at this stage. Marc Harbrow is both senior & U18 coach, ideal way to mentor the kids & build on the great base of junior talent at the Lions. After 3 wooden spoons the only way is up..!

Lets hope Lions can nail down some good recruits and have an improved year next year

I hear Norths may have a non playing coach this year as well, Kane going to concentrate on playing? Lions had 35 on the track for first pre season session on Monday, an all time record I believe.... How's numbers elsewhere?

Great to see good numbers early on at Cities. I seriously doubt many clubs would be starting anytime soon so Lions are getting a headstart thats for sure. Saints dont normally start till after xmas with many players heading home for the holidays. I doubt this year would be any different

Dog's started Monday night as well, solid numbers from all accounts. Watch out the beaches in 2014..! I know TB has already secured one very good player & they also have some good kids coming through.

Hawks have not appointed anybody as yet.

Have heard positive reports coming out of Wallaby Terd Park. Sounds like the doggies will be serious contenders next year.

Any truth to the rumour that Adam Mueller signing with Saints? I hear also that Mark Kennedy is going to be official joint coach with the big unit, for free, saves em some cash & he pulls the strings down there anyway, good move for them I think.

Haven't heard anything about Mueller or Kennedy. Kenno as bench coach is pretty much a joint coach anyway but im sure the club wont say no if he wants to have more input. As for Mueller, any club would love to have him so i wouldn't be surprised if Saints wanted him or he wanted to come over.
