Good observation Heywood, that is a major drawback for mine. Involving 5 teams rather than 4 out of 10/11 in finals is a positive but not at sacrifice of advantages to minor premier.

Over the last couple of years the big advantage of CD level is the competitiveness of the competition. If you increase the finals teams does that take that away to an extent?

I don't think it will take away the competitiveness, I think it will just allow another team to have a chance at finals that really didn't play as required to make the 4.

As was stated earlier, and this topic has been done before.. why reward mediocrity?

I dont think 5th place is mediocrity, the AFL have 16 teams and a top 8 - as in the top 50% play finals. I do understand the possible negativity of top team playing only 2 games in a month. I assume the older players would get more benefit out of that!!!

Good luck to everyone this weekend. My tips for the finals (here goes):
Week one
Belco over ANU and Goulburn over Jets in the 4s
Woden over Bidgee and ANU over Harman in the 3s

Week two
Belco over Jets in 4s
Harman over Woden in 3s

Week three
Belco over Goulburn in 4s
Harman over ANU in 3s

With the quality of matches this year I guess anything could happen in this finals series.

Tips for Div 3 (and Stats, 'cause i love 'em)

Harman v ANU

Harman went 8W,1L at 164% in 1st 9rnds, and 9W,0L at 158% in last 9rnds.
ANU went 9W,0L at 210% in 1st 9rnds, and 6W,3L at 152% in last 9rnds.
That amounts to ANU scoring an average of 3gls a game less and conceding 8pts a game more in the second half of the season then they did in the 1st half, where as Harman are close to on par. Played each other twice in rnd 4 and 14, results between the two went to the home side by about 3 goals.

Harman by 4 goals.

Bidgee v Woden

Bidgee went 5W,4L at 114% in 1st 9rnds, and 5W,4L at 136% in last 9rnds.
Woden went 4W,5L at 100% in 1st 9rnds, and 7W,2L at 131% in last 9rnds.
That amounts to Bidgee conceding 15pts/game more in the second half of the season then they did in the 1st half, where as Woden have improved their scoring by 10pts/game more and conceded 10pts/game less in the second half of the season. Played each other twice in rnd 4 and 14, results between the two went to Bidgee both times. On current form, this will be a close one.

Woden by 2 goals

Tips for Div 4 (and Stats, 'cause i love 'em)

Goulburn v Gungahlin

Goulburn went 7W,0L,2Byes at 287% in 1st 9rnds, and 9W,0L,0B at 244% in last 9rnds.
Gungahlin went 5W,2L,1Draw,1B at 185% in 1st 9rnds, and 8W,0L,1B at 300% in last 9rnds.
That amounts to Goulburn scoring about the same per game in both halves of the year and conceding 7pts a game more in the second half of the season , where as Gungahlin scored 3gls a game more and conceded 3 goals a game less in the second half of the season. Played each other once in rnd 5, Goulburn by 5 goals in that game. The two powerhouses of div4, will be a great game.

Gungahlin by 3 goals.

Belconnen v ANU

Belco went 6W,1L,1Draw,1Bye at 188% in 1st 9rnds, and 4W,4L,1B at 106% in last 9rnds.
ANU went 5W,3L(1forfeit),1B at 166% in 1st 9rnds, and 5W,3L,1B at 124% in last 9rnds.
That amounts to Belco conceding about 5 goals/game more in the second half of the season then they did in the 1st half, where as ANU have improved their scoring by 2 goals/game but have conceded about 5 goals/game more in the second half of the season. Played each other in rnd 15, with the result going to Belco by 3pts. Both teams match up well, although with the added couple of players that Belco will drop back may give them the edge.

Belco by 3 goals

Team news Woden

Woden have one change for the game - I have succumbed to swine flu (true story - don't get it, its terrible). Of the absolute best 22 on our list, 20 are playing and two others are unlikely again this season.

Team news Murrumbidgee

Cowboy Herbert broke his hand at training Monday night and is out. Wade Williams is gone with broken ribs sustained against Gungahlin, and another one or two may be out.

Well it doesnt get any closer than todays 3rds game with Woden winning by a point 59 to 58. Jugs came back hard in the second half and had a chance to win but last shot 10 metres out hit the post which was heartbreaking for them but great from wodens perspective.

ANU beat Belconnen in fourths by around 20 points

Eppa nailed it. Woden dominated the first half and the Jugs played outstanding footy in the second half to take the lead late in the final term. Woden kicked 2 goals in the last quarter to retake the lead.

Big Hilly took a mark 10m out and hit the post - he was $1.01 to make it... Unbelievable win for Woden

So for those of us who make up the numbers now

Who are the best players in Div 3 and Div 4

And who are the hardmen of the Canberra Districts

And Long Haul - the league does need to look at helping clubs with finals or three divisions - those clubs like the Cootas, Yass, Coomas even Jugs who are trying to develop this greta game with junior codes, clinics and second or third teams - not kjust sitting back and cherry picking

Good Comp. Love it. ANU were worthy today. Will be a fantatic GF, regardless of who is running around.

Good clip by Tuggeranong on the canteen prices and gate entry this weekend too.

So ive watched all games over the weekend .. ANU played ok over an ordinary Belco, Woden nearly choked but did well over bidgee But really disappoinnted with Sunday games... I play for a third div team that wasnt good enough for finals,BUT next year might play for the jets at least if we cant make the finals i could join the other 15 div 3 players and try win div 4 with them as that would be the pinnacle of ACT footy, Goulburn were terrible and were embarrassed by the the Div 3 gunghalin team but should bounce back... harman played well and were nearly chewed up in a physical game But ANU couldnt do it...Anu will hit back and win the comp tho......signing of from the Bunker! ANU to win both grades !

Anu have won 2 of their last 5 - blues peaking - with plenty of wildcats experience to make a great gf vs hoggies

So are you saying the Jets stacked their side? Or not. I can't quite understand it.

Congrats to ANU for their win on Saturday. I think we finished about where we deserved to.

Im not sure i dont watch enough games but i read sporting pulse and there was some players who spent more time in 3rd than 4th. 6 players were 100% 4th div players

Um sorry? The game was one of the most physical i've seen all year, but to say Harman were nearly chewed up is telling porkies I'm afraid. I think both sides had there share of wins physically, and one sickening hit in the middle of the ground with griggs getting carted off, was about the worst i've seen in years.

The game was incredible. Both sides match up really well. I have to say that the back 6 of both sides are very strong. Obviously it was a low scoring match due partly to the rain, but the amount of times it went into the forward fifty for both teams, for no score was incredible.

Who is number 19 for ANU?? He lost the game for them i think. He was an absolute peanut the whole game. I think i counted 5 times he gave away either a free kick or a fifty. He is a liability and in finals i wouldn't have him in the side. I would have loved to have seen 5 more minutes of the footy they were playing and seen the result that way, then two fifty metre penalties and a goal for Harman. The result would have been the same, but at least there would have been 5 more minutes of good footy. The guy was a shocker.

It was just a good old fashioned scrap for the whole game. Extremely tough, and no one really backed down. Harman were in front for most of the day, and ANU fought valiantly to the end, but were just not good enough to get over the line.

I thought the wet conditions really suited the smaller ANU side, but Harman just kept hitting the packs and forcing the ball forward.

As I only really know the Harman boys i'll give a bit of a run down for them.

I thought Cam was pretty well tagged the whole game. He looked like he got a high hit early on that shook him, and he never really had the influence he usually has. He had some very telling touches late in the game, but he certainly wasn't up to his usual standard. All credit to ANU for this though. He was around every pack and just couldn't get his hands on it. I saw he was in the best on sporting pulse, but i think that may be a bit generous. Especially considering some of the other players.

I don't know all the players (i've been away a lot this year, and not at all last year) but the back since were tremendous. Horey, Steve Imrie, and Callum birtles in particular were stellar. All were hard at the ball, and just ran straight through pack after pack. Birtles gave them that flair around the back fifty, and was fantastic in the air. Should have been in the best for mine. Gerry was very solid also, and he seems to have a consistant game regularly.

I will probably give the win in the midfield to ANU. Until the final quarter i thought they got there hands on the ball a bit more than the Hogs. The only draw back was the entry into the forwards was killed every time by harmans solid six. The run from harmans back six was probably what got them the win. They ran a little bit more than ANU.

Some of the regulars from Harman went a bit missing. I won't name names, but there were a few very handy players that were off their games on Sunday. It may have been the weather, but hopefully it wasn't the final.

The bigger boys struggled. Froud, James and co were found a bit wanting in the ordinary weather. Very understandable though, and they didn't go down without a fight, but it just wasn't the weather for the big guys. Hopefully the GF will be in perfect conditions and we can see the footy we all are hoping for.

Cams brother Luke copped what was the biggest hit I've seen in years. It was sickening. It was absolutely courageous from both him and the ANU guy to go for that ball, and Spear came off second best. He didn't move for minutes and was stretchered off, and i would be really surprised if we see him again this year. I can't see that hit being just a concussion. The most disturbing part of the whole thing was the ANU drunks in the stands giving it to Griggs as he lay not moving, clearly in a very bad way. It was poor form, and i think they should be pretty embarrassed by that.

Both forward lines clearly struggled. Both from the wet ground, and the class of the defenders. Harman had more shots on goal, but were probably less convincing going forward. When ANU scored, they did so with a lot more ease than Harman at times. Harman just didn't have the small crumbers that ANU seemed to have. The ball rarely got marked inside 50 and ANU moved it out of the defense pretty easily.

I'm not sure i've seen Bryn Mcewen play firsts much this year, but his inclusion in the wet was a master stroke. He was electric. I don't think he played there the whole game, but when he was at the base of the packs inside forwrad fifty he found it more often than not. He was the reason Harman had as many shots on goals as they did. For me he was close to best on ground, and if there is wet weather footy again, should be a certain starter.

I'm not sure where Aitchison was played but he was everywhere. If Bryn was BOG, Aicho was a very close second. Actually he probably gets in front of Bryn with his performance. It was quite special to see everyone else fumbling the ball in the greasy conditions, but Aicho waltzes in and scoops up the ball one handed. He's classy, and has pace to burn. He'd be nigh impossible to tag, and probably not worth the effort. He was on fire on Sunday, and will be one to watch come Grand Final day.

Blues vs ANU should be a cracker, but the Blues have lost 3 with injury at this stage. Our depth will be tested this weekend.

Not sure how ANU pulled up but the reports from the boys at the ground said it was a hard and tough match and there would be some sore boys today.

Nov4 - Jets stacking their side? I don't think so. Ports has missed most the year injured and played the majority of games in 4's.

I didn't think you could play 4's if you had played more games in 3's though... Or am I wrong?

Some fantastic footy in Districts Comp again this year and it continues thru the finals. Well done to Woden for getting the chocolates in a tight one on Saturday. Altus, Fred and Stevens played good games, and Eggo carved at ground level. They have some good form going into finals and will be hard to stop.

Unfortunately missed Harman/ANU due to Silly Sunday but sounds like it was also a cracker.
A couple of interesting results in Div 4 as well makes for a good finish. Great footy this year and looking forward to next year already (unfortunately).

Bit of a pity the Women's games are also on Saturday this week as it means we can't support each other.

Gunghalin appealed that ruling even after being told it wasnt in the spirit of the game im told... Im sure there are some pissed off div 4 players that missed out.

Shows what an Injury Ravaged Season the First team had if all but 6 of the Second team got a game!!!

After the Jets 3rd Div side was descimated with injuries in the first half of the season some second teir players were obviously pushed up to help out which the likes of Sporting Pulse would have you believe these are ALL 3rd grade players . . these players were always going to be playing Div 4 and the calibre of players they were substituing spoke for themselves when they returned in the second half of the season almost resureccting the 3rd's campaign on another finals series. As for having a run with the Jets (nov4) you're more than welcome to present yourself at training for 2010, I'm sure you'd be happy to find out what a unified passionate football club is all about. Good luck to all playing in the next two weeks.
