Just on that point, the FFA want 'sustainable growth' of the league - yes there are a few big clubs who could potentially out muscle any other in terms of buying power (the likes of Victory, Sydney, the Wanderers and probably Melbourne City if they are bankrolled by their parent club) if the salary cap was removed; but they want to try and keep the competition 'relatively' even across the board. IIRC, most clubs still haven't recouped the initial start up costs (with some investors saying they don't expect to ever get their investments back).

With a few clubs currently in precarious situations, it makes sense for the shackles (so to speak) to remain on.

what incentive does that send give young kids to follow the local league? like it or not seeing a game live any game right down to curling is 100 times more exciting then atching it on tele. As long as kids have the choice of watching buddy franklin live or looking at a Mark Schwarzer poster because their dad wont let them get up at 3 am to watch a local kid play premier league, then soccer will always come second.

It's 19 years ago that around 90,000 attended Australia vs Iran in a world cup qualifier.

It's true that NSL crowds were poor, except for Perth Glory which had higher attendances then than it does now, but the recent NSL grand finals were very well attended.

English soccer has been popular in Australia for decades, and in fact in the 70s there were at least two shows on FTA playing English soccer matches.

Apart from these big tours - what is so frightening about the support for soccer? The A-League ratings are absolutely nowhere and only the biggest Premier League games get a reading in the ratings.

SBS problem with the A-League isn't covering it, it is because of the Abbott government reneging on the election promise not to cut funding. This has meant that they are looking at all expenditure and would rather put those funds into other programming.

FFA want anyone taking it on to guarantee Friday night coverage, something neither 7 or 9 are willing to do and 10 hasn't been able to do anything due to internal restructure. Preliminary discussion have been held with Foxtel on a new agreement and Channel 9 is also involved at this stage on the new deal but want to cover Saturday night games not Friday as they broadcast the NRL then.

If we're purely talking about the A League, then I don't think you'll find anyone who disagrees - Europe will always be the premier home for those wanting to play at the top level. Even some of our Asian neighbours (Japan, South Korea, the Middle East, China) can offer more money than any local teams. The US is having a massive boom with the game over there and is also attracting plenty of stars entering the twilight of their careers. The reality is most players will probably look at those markets where they can get the most coin for their efforts.

The salary cap is still relatively small (though has increased by a little over $1m since the competition started) - it's important to note however that clubs can sign a 'marquee' player, who's salary is not included in the cap. In Cahill's situation, he could still make more money in China and went there.

Back to the original point though, I do think there is some validity in that football is fast gaining both participation and interest at a grass root levels. Will that eventually mean football can overtake the AFL? Probably very unlikely in the near/medium/long term future but if we are talking about the code continuing to grow, then it almost certainly will.

I do take a look at the figures, probably closer than anyone else on this board. The figures arent that far apart, the average per game is - due to the fact that ALL NRL FTA games are show nationally, whereas the AFL has a lot of standalone sub 200k games in Perth and Adelaide, but theres not a lot of difference in the total figures.

Yes, as well as more regional reporting. AFL figures are somewhat nebulous, particularly since regionalTAM no longer seems to put its figures up.

Wonder why nrl qoutes that figure. It doesnt benefit ch9 any as it would be a different station that runs the nz coverage wouldnt it?
Plus the fact if your going like for like it would only be national figures you would compare.

That will be news to anyone that actually tracks NRL ratings, especially the NRL folks who hate the idea that they would be left out. Its worth about 100 million every 5 years to the NRL, so its kind of hard to ignore.
