Yet we won 3 flags amongst the expansion backdrop not to mention playing 3 finals series in a row before 16.
Side was built around Cotch/JR8/Dusty & Lids.
Carl have 10,Ess 9,1st rnd picks compared to our 3(Dow/Gibcus/Brown).
its not all about Draft picks.

It's actually pretty hard to argue against trading out our first rounders for multiple second and third rounders or more rookie selections where we absolutely murder it.

Unless you get a top 5 pick then you should absolutely consider it, or at least trade for a 1st round the next year (so you have 2 the following year). That way if a gun player becomes available the year after you have the picks to trade.

It sounds crazy to be talking like this but I agree. The top half dozen picks sure, keep them or if there's a good tall that might go top 10 ok but our stats show that aside from having two first round picks to utilise (as you say) or an untradable pick, the first round commonly seems like a bust.

Maybe everyone has been looking at the draft all wrong. The value is cherry picking late talent. Go looking for Richmond Men.

Would be interesting to see who Geelong have picked up with their first rounders considering they are generally playing finals

It is always going to be more difficult drafting later in the first round than the top 5 who usually go on to be the elite players.

That being said, Lennon and Conca stand out to me as absolute howlers. Instead of Conca we could have picked up Caddy, Prestia or Lynch in the picks after who have all gone on to become very good players......

It's interesting to note that as one of the clubs most affected by the introduction of the Giants and the Suns, being out of contention when those early drafts were so compromised, not having access to several top picks, we have now raided their excess players to great effect.

Prestia, Caddy and Lynch from Suns and Townsend, Taranto and Hopper all came to the club in the last five years. In that time be also traded out to those clubs players like Miles, Brandon Ellis, Corey Ellis, Markov and Chol. Fringe players that we utilised to create good trading relations with the new franchises that remain the case.

The club appears well run, all on the same page and still hungry for team success. None of those things were present for nearly 40 years, the bulk of the time I've followed the club. It feels good to be the Kings of the Jungle once again, just like when I was a kid. I'm looking forward to this season with great expectation.

This is really only relevant since the 2016 draft as that’s when Clarke took over.
Took Bolton at 29 and Graham at 53 and also picked Stengle as a rookie. Big tick.
2017 we got Higgins at 17, Coleman-Jones at 20 and Balta at 25. Although Higgins and Coleman-Jones didn’t work out for us I don’t think they were bad picks and we were well compensated when they left. Balta was a very good selection.
2018 didn’t work out great with Collier-Dawkins, Ross, Turner and English. But if you research that draft you see that it was a great draft for the top 12 and then fell away dramatically. Not many picked after Collier-Dawkins have done a lot.
2019 and 2020 we didn’t have good picks due to being busy winning flags but still managed to find a few late in Cumberland and Ralphsmith. Rioli a father son obviously helped.
Our 2021 haul looks great but wish we took Van Rooyen over Brown as he looks a good player and could have been the Riewoldt replacement we need. We also have a lot that play Browns position that have a lot of footy left so that confused me.

I think our drafting is very good but you never get them all right. However, our trading and free agency since 2016 has been outstanding and has provided the opportunity have the success we have had and also holds us in good stead moving forward.

Higgins was a great pick for 17. Dow far from a horrendous pick. Kid has talent
Horrendous was probably a bit strong but it was clearly the wrong choice picking a guy that walked away while contracted because he didn't want to have to earn his spot, especially after the support the club gave him through his brain surgery and recovery. He started well at the Saints but has also been dropped a couple of times for not doing the team things. No way was he 'a great pick'. He is/was not a Richmond man.

Starcevich was the very next pick and guys like Oscar Allen, Liam Ryan, Sam Taylor, Tom De Koning etc etc were all still available.

Dow is a bust. Was seen by most as a reach that early and looks to be true so far.

None of those guys kicked goty. Higgins was a super talent but he got lured when up in the bubble by his beloved Saints and took an opportunity. His whole family barrack for them so it's understandable in a way. Yes he ultimately wasn't a Richmond man but that doesn't make him a poor pick. It just didn't work out.

Dow is on the list so he isn't a bust. Kid's shown ability in the matches he's played.

picking skinny mids like RCD and Dow is problematic. RCD took longer than 4 years. He could do centre clearances quite well but still looked young when he was delisted. He looked slow to mature. Maybe Dow and RCD are highly talented but it's a gamble that their body develops. Haven't seen Dow lately so not sure how he is tracking. If he's added anything to the good hands. The club bring in TT and JH. So obviously don't expect Dow to step this year. He's now competing with Ross and Graham for a spot.

I'd pick more Ross or Graham types. Guys ready to go.
RFC does it the other way around. Ross and Graham late picks. Dow RCD early picks.

Higgins was ready to go.and forced his way into a flag team. Probably should have won 2018.
Any of the other options at the Dow pick may not have got games for years anyway.we had lot's of KPF so no point drafting KPFs when Chol and CJ are coming through. We lost Elton and Griffiths but replaced with Lynch. Sampson Ryan is another speculative early pick. Ben Miller ends up playing his role.
But the embarrassing Conca, Lennon and Corey Ellis picks would Smart if we hadn't won flags.
We probably win a flag this year. RCD chapter 2 is getting very good money playing football at the next rung down.

Yeah it does. WGAF about goal of the year? And no I don't think it's understandable. Lots of kids come from footy mad families of other clubs.

Conca played 100 games, can't be too upset about that one. Ellis and Lennon

Disappointing For a no 6.
2018 he saw some a win in a final.

It took him a long time to get injury free.

Again. A smallish body type.
