All over for this year!

Check out our new picks from the draft:
Pick #13 (matched): Isaac Kako - Small Forward, Calder Cannons
Pick #37: Kayle Gerreyn - Ruck/Forward, West Perth
Pick #39: Angus Clarke - Defender, Glenelg
Pick #61: Rhys Unwin - Small Forward, Greater Western Victoria
Pick #70: Zak Johnson - Midfielder, Northern Knights
Pick #6 RD: Archer Day-Lewis - Forward, Bendigo Pioneers
Cat B Rookie: Jayden Nguyen - Defender, Calder Cannons

There is risk with all picks. It is not really an over simplification. We turned pick 9 into 3 top 40 picks plus we still got our guy. The best draft is considered to be 2001. Try these on for size.
4. G Polak 111 games
5. X Clarke 106 games
6. A Sampi 78 games
9. L Molan 0 games
10. S Power 123 games
11. R Cole 63 games
14. A Watson 7 games
15. B brokks 10 games
16 R Ladson 125 games
18 S harvey 14 games
20 D Elstone 0 games.
What makes a super draft is not just the great players and super stars at the top end but also the stars that come through the late first , second and third rounds.
2014 is the same and it is ranked in the top few drafts. 9 players in the top 20 played under 100 games.
1999 gets rated highly as it had 6 200 game players in the top 10 but it only had 1 super star in the top 10. Had a lot of 200 game players right down to pick 73.
200 had two stars at 1 & 2 and close to a star at 3 but then 4 guys who played under 50 games in the next 4 picks and then 3 okay player in the next 3.
The percentage of finding a better player is a little higher but overall the better asset in clubs who have had the best draft years have been total number of picks in the top 40.
The risk is actually almost as big in keeping it and having the eggs in one basket and on top of that to get Kako we are trading out future picks to get the points.
It is when you are saying we have a first this year, and traded it for a first round next year. Your list should keep going to the high 20s.. .where you see less players make it to 100 games. I'm not saying that there isn't a risk with ANY draft picks. I'm saying that Melbourne could end up anywhere next year (and that's a risk). Maybe we get pick #27 back next year?

An ITK on our board has said that both Richmond and the dogs declined this offer
Offer may be one of the F1 picks.

So you are saying that pick 10 is way better than for arguments sake pick 15(the worst performed pick) next year plus the two second round picks this year ?

People can make their own minds up.

As it is pick 15 averages 14 games less but pick 19 averages the same and oddly pick 37 just under.
If you look at the best draft hauls by clubs it is often off the back of a spread of picks in the top 40. A few hit gold with two stars in the top 5 but we are not talking about that. We are talking pick 9-13 range.
This is my thing. Top 40 picks over a few years is what has been the best result. Would have been good either way IMO but I do not see it as a weaker position.

Is that the end of the world? Before any trading happened would you have been happy with Kako, Shanahan/Whitlock, 2x2nds and have all your 2025 picks or would you have preferred to stay where you were and hope Kako wasn't bid on early? I think Rosa got a great trade that should set you up very soon. Trading the Dees F1 should be a no brainer.

If we trade our future Melbourne pick ? What do we get back from you? Would it just be 28?

I'd prefer we kept that F1 if it's a straight swap for Richmond's 2nd.

Going in to next year with 2 x 1sts is a nice base.

Not the end of the world for me but I was one of the few that had no issues with trading pick 9 before we actually did it. It was one of the 3 scenarios that where there and we got a good range of picks for it.
If the Tigers are willing I would trade Melbourne's F1 .

Firstly, the entire point of Kako as an NGA is that he would be virtually free.

We traded our 9 so that it wouldn't be used up by Kako, and we originally had 27. Trading that same 9 for your 28 is basically going in reverse and seeing Kako as the 9 pick. It makes no sense.

Framing it as 9 + 27 for Kako and Shanahan defeats the entire purpose of the NGA.

Either you guys deal with us in proper faith or we move on and you can have 1 pick left. You guys are just getting way too greedy at this point.

Would be exceptionally on brand for North to do something cataclysmically bad and then Essendon to have 24 hours to stop, prop and assess and then go ‘hahah lol, watch me whip, watch me nay nay’ and do something that is somehow worse.

3 of Moraes, Gross, Ough, Clarke or Alger, done, go home.

So we've gone from 1 x 1st, 1 x 2nd, no 3rd, no 4th to:

13 (Kako), 2 x 2nds, 1 x 3rd and an extra F1 whilst still keeping our F1 and F2 intact.

Seems like good business to me. Improved our hand this year and next year simultaneously.

Something something jackets something something

On a serious note, great work.

Yeah and i like the idea of really looking internally next season and assessing whether Perkins, Cox, Reid, Jones, Hobbs and Tsatas will make it and then making draft choices next years draft with the f1 picks based on how they develop. Ie, if Reid, Jones and Cox all stagnate - we’ll fine, more inclined to look at KPP, but right now there are just so many unknowns.

Peak Essington if we trade either of next years first rounders. Pick 37 and next years second or walk away. The meltdown will be all time if a first is traded.
