Recruiting AFL Draft Watch 2024 - What do we do, we don't have a top 10 pick?

Durham was 300th for kicking efficiency this year, Caldwell about 370th. Durham 192nd for goal assist average, Caldwell 181st. Late July Champion data released a list that had Caldwell as the 9th worst kick inside 50 in the competition. These guys are not what I'm talking about. Good enough to not be liabilities but we need actually damaging players.
Compare them to midfielders mate

There is also much more to it than KE% as the below shows

Theyre both well ahead of Naicos, Bont and Gulden. Durham ahead of Zerrett and Dawson

All 5 id consider the absolute elite kicks of the comp

The eye test says differently aswell, as it does for the above 5 names

I agree that there's context in everything. but that includes that Durham and Caldwell aren't getting tagged, they aren't winning the same amount of contested ball, they aren't taking the high risk reward kicks. They are using the ball at slightly higher percentage, but are getting way less bang for their buck in the way of scores and assists.

They are what they are and that is very good quality support players, but they are not highly damaging stars.

It's strange that people are advocating for blokes that are having 30 less combined goals and assists than the best players in the comp and saying they are sufficient enough midfield talent going forward.

This is not to speak down about these improved players, but that we still need to seriously invest in the midfield.

Yeh i probably wouldnt pick a KPF at our current 1st pick if it were me

I just dont think their just at minimal afl standard by foot

There next step is to improve that SI by 1 a game each, but a decent forward line would also aid in that

I see Caldwell and Durham as defensive midfielders. Sometimes both and certainly Caldwell did jobs most weeks for the first half of the year

Durhams first year onball, hes far from the end product. He took a while to get his head around the onball craft when you consider PS and the opening 4-5 weeks. He got better as the year went on

But i think its clear we need better players, if we didnt, we would be where Sydney are. Those guys come from the pointy end of the draft usually

Surely we need players with great running capacity…which would rule out Smilie wouldn’t it??
Look at the good sides (GWS, SWANS) lots of great runners & foot skills.
So with our first pick you either pick another forward to team up with Caddy or you pick up a runner, good foot skills(Lindsay?)or high footy IQ (MurphyReid?)

In a tribute to the recently departed Dorodo we should take the “best available” by using Cal’s rankings.

100% agree. We’ve finally started to turn the tide by taking Durham and Martin recently. Great runners. Time to keep it going.

Yet as far as contested possession goes in the top 100 for 2024 we have
37 Merrett
42 Caldwell
52 Durham
For me I do not want a big body defensive guy with an early pick. The big body guy we need is the Dangerfield / Bont / Cripps type. Blokes who can take the game by the scruff of the neck at their best and kick goals at their best.
They are the big body types we need and do not have.
FOS. Trade up and get him.

I thought the mail on this draft was because it was so strong teams were more open to trading down as they’d still be getting someone good
Did see some talking head suggesting WCE trade back. It was suggesting their pick 3 into 2x mid-late 1st round picks.

Guessing that could entice Freo (multiple 1st round) or Tiges (assuming multiple Freo picks steer coming their way from trades).

Can’t quite see us having enough currency to get this done ourselves.

They just want in.

Alixander Tauru or Sam Lalor for me.
Tauru is dynamic in the air and is a competitor.
Lalor is a two zone player who unlike most of our mids can actually play forward.
My guess is Lalor will be gone by our pick.
Tauru and Kako would automatically give us speed and athleticism which we lack.
The Flying Dutchman went alright so would the Flying Viking!

I like the way Tauru attacks the footy and he is really good in the air. Have now watched a few games since you gave me the tip to have a look at him. Real competitor. You would have to say he would have been a bit higher up the order if he did not have the niggling injuries early in the year.

Went better than alright pal….

Haven’t seen Tauru yet but do like Lalor. If he’s available at our pick I’d be (1) surprised and (2) delighted. His physicality and marking ability would be perfect for us.
